Tatooine could be the Star Wars equivalent to Planet Hell from Star Trek or a random English quarry in Doctor Who. It's scenery that can be used over and over and over again, with a little bit of sand you could be on another desert planet like Jakku.

I really don't mind them going back to Tatooine, my biggest issue is that they _still_ can't get it right. It's not very populated at all. Mos Espa is WAY too large for the population of the planet. The whole population of 200,000 look like they all live in Mos Espa. Also, the "mean boss" in the Kenobi series would never fly on that planet. Everyone would work together and were tough as nails to live on that planet. Community is _huge_ there. And we're never ever shown that.

Simple: droids. Consider the Lars moisture farm. The only humans we see there are Owen, Beru and Luke. They use droids to do most of the work. So, if you look at Tatooine as a whole, what kinds of people are there? For starters, lots and lots of smugglers and criminals who are not full-time residents of the planet. They are transient, coming and going as their "business" requires. So they don't count towards the full-time population. But they would naturally stay close to the cities unless they were hardcore survivalists. Because the cities are where you will find food, water and cantinas serving these things, along with landing bays for their ships. Case-in-point: Han was actually from Corellia, not Tatooine, and worked as a smuggler. So he was off-planet much of the time because he earned money smuggling, not setting up a retail shop in Mos Eisley. Even Jabba, who effectively ruled the planet, was not a native. Hence the incredible species diversity of his "court", who were no more native to Tatooine than he was.

Tatooine is special, not just because it is a movie favorite (continuity). Tatooine has a history of iconic events and stages that date back before the Rakata; there's a lot of secrets hidden in that sand, things happen there that never would anywhere else even on planets known to be strong in one side of the force or the other. One day Lucas will continue his feelings on that planet.

Tatooine is... something else. In episode IV, they made a point of showing whale skeletons and evidence of long gone oceans. This has been quietly kept up throughout the expansion of the universe. Like Dune, something happened to drain the oceans and leave behind desolation. Unlike Dune, it's not sandworms, spice, and fundamentalist religions. If Owen and Beru Lars are average examples of the people there, people are willing to let the past be. It's also a world where very fine actors are sorely under used.

This video made me realize: Ahsoka and Andor may be the only Star Wars series that don't actually visit Tatooine. It's kind of freaky that only two out of 7 star wars series don't visit Tat, isn't it? Clone Wars, Rebels, Mandalorian, Book of Boba, and Obi-wan all have their fair share of sand scenes. For such an important planet in the SW galaxy, it's actually a little bit odd to see a story where something DOESN'T take place there.

I seem to recall it mentioned that Tatooine was a bit of a focal point for the Force particularly as it applied to the immaculate conception of Anakin Skywalker and prophesies of the collapse of the Old Republic. The most obvious reason of all, I didn't hear you mention. It's because they already have the sets built for Tatooine. It would require a bit of work to convert them, and then they would need to convert them back later, possibly messing them up. For example, I noticed after the long running series Xena and Hercules ended, there was suddenly a flood of shows using the sets and wardrobe elements from those shows, especially in New Zealand. They probably sold the sets and wardrobe. Disney doesn't want to lose money.

  • @brightlord-ov7cm

I always thought it was because the location is cheaper to work on and has less you have to do to prepare the set, which is why they keep returning to "Tatooine" in that now cursed movie franchise bought by Disney and destroyed by it.

Many writers and storytellers for hundreds, if not thousands of years have used the extremes of the desert, and the austerity it brings as a source of spiritual significance. The desert is where prophets and holy men would go to get away from worldly pleasures, reject the material and become closer to the divine. This was the case with Moses in the Book of Exodus, Jesus in the New Testament, where he was tempted by the Devil, where Mohammed goes to a cave to receive the word of Allah in the Qu'ran, and where Paul Atreides becomes the prophesied Mua'dib in Dune. Its no surprise then that George Lucas decided to make the hero of his story grow up in a desert environment before embarking on his hero's journey.

And, if you are based in the U.S. there are a million places to film (action or backgrounds); Death Valley, Yuma, Great Dunes Park, All of Utah...

Most likely because Tatooine was based on Dune. And so it held a central role in it's related galaxy.

I think theres a hard decision between making a new planet and no one liking it, using a known planet and it just being nostalgia, and going to a known planet that hasnt been in live action and it just being fan service for the book reading people

I can't express how much i hate how often they return to Tatooine. It is a backwater planet that is supposed to have no major meaning. Yet they mold it into one of the most important planets in the galaxy, but at the same time no one seems to notice this plan is wildly important. And I'm actually fine with it showing up in the OG triology because it ties into why Han was there in the first place, i'm also fine-ish with it being in the prequals, but really already we are seeing how Anakin could have been born on literally any other backwater planet. And then even the sequal triology had to have a scene there.
