Why Spain wants to become Europe's 'energy hub' - Interview with Spanish economy minister Calvino

Spain's economy minister has told DW Business her country is ready to become Europe's energy hub. Nadia Calvino spoke with DW’s Pablo Foley Elias as Spain aims to establish itself as a key strategic source of power for the EU. The country is banking on renewable technology and in particular, green hydrogen. Calvino also spoke about the importance of reviving an EU-MERCOSUR trade deal and what Olaf Scholz could learn from Spain’s successes.

Spain has the opportunity to become a very important player in Europe not just in energy production but international relations with north Africa and latin America. I really hope they play their cards right and become a power house. I was in Spain a couple a weeks ago and their infrastructure is definitely ahead of north America.

Every deal with northern Africa means a loss in Human Rights, Spain abandoned saharauis, it means a weaker Agriculture or Industry. Only entrepeneurs close to the spanish government benefit from that. Not spaniards.

Renewables currently supply around 40% of our total energy needs. But instead of promoting nuclear energy to support renewables we are importing gas from Africa, America and also Russia from intermediary countries. We could be cleaner and less dependent on fossil fuels but we choose to import gas from countries that don’t respect human rights.

For the first time, I believe that the two major parties and Spanish private capital do not want to miss this opportunity and the commitment is very strong, a project for the country. one thing leads to another, more income, more opportunities, more money to invest in education and other aspects to improve. a new illusion that at the same time benefits the EU and stops the few eurosceptics. I wish but there is way too much red tape, it's difficult to start a business, you get charged for everything when you aren't even profitable yet and it is difficult to navigate the bureaucracy without lawyers and other experts so you end up paying even more money. Add to that that there is little investment in tech not just from the public sphere but also private. There is little capital and many end up moving their businesses to the UK, Netherlands, Germany, Nordic nations and if they can to the US to get things going. Spain has definitely improved a lot since 2008 primarily under the reforms of Rajoy that cut down on bureaucracy but there is a lot left to do. Rajoy had the chance with his majority government and two terms to do a lot more but he failed to either because it wasn't in his interest or he didn't care to. I thought Calvino as VP and Minister of Economy and Digitalization that we would see more efficient government bureaucracy, at least for business creations, but the whole digitalization hasn't really manifested at least not in the way I imagine it would. We shall see how things improve.

I acknowledge that her English is very good! However I live in Spain and we all know this woman. It just so happens that elections are coming up and her party is at a very high risk of not being re-elected. So what I see here is an attempt to make everyone believe her government has been a successful one and that her government has managed to lower unemployment rates. This is false, people in Spain still struggle to find jobs with a decent salary here (unless you work in IT). The truth of the matter is that Spain could have been Europe’s energy hub a long time ago but all the different political parties were busy collaborating with energy companies, getting paid by them and making sure that didn’t happen.

The grid is not ready to supply that energy, it is way more expensive than France's nuclear, there is no concurrent market within Spain to sell it to. Faced with these changes in climate, it would not come as a surprise to find that the Spanish are trying to make a virtue out of, what would otherwise, be a climate disaster. If you are accusing them of corruption and you have evidence to back that up, then the Spanish courts should have a say on that! But if your claim is true, they would be motivated to increase the role of Spain in the European energy market. More energy production in Spain would mean greater profits for them and lower prices for Spaniards. Your analysis of the situation is clearly faulty.

There's nothing to stop you installing solar panels on your house - in fact the Sanchez government is offering you grants of up to 40% to do so. However you're right that the revolving door between government and the boards of the electricity companies gives them undue influence. You only need to look at the current Spanish law on selling the energy your PV system produces to the energy companies to see it. The EU requires that excess energy is bought by the electricity companies at least at the wholesale price - in Spain this was watered down after lobbying from Iberdrola and Endesa to allowing electricity companies to offer a credit against that part of your electricity bill which relates to the supply of electricity. Which is fine until you consider that for half the year any PV system that has a battery component will probably not take any electricity from the Grid. So in June, say, you have sun all month - you draw nothing from the Grid - your system produces a surplus of 240KWh. Your bill is made up of the cost of the electricity supplied to you, various charges and taxes - because you bought no electricity from the Grid there is no charge for electricity supplied - you should be paid €0.08 per KWh for the electricity you supplied (€19.20 for 240KWh), however as you didn't buy anything from the Grid there is nothing to credit your €19.20 against so you lose it entirely (it can only be applied to electricity supplied, not fees and taxes). You can't even "store" the credit until the Winter when you will possibly take electricity from the Grid - the "credit" is only applicable against that month's bill. Meanwhile Iberdrola / Endesa et al have sold "your" 240KWh to another consumer for probably 20c a KWh netting them €48.00 that month. For the last two years I've produced a net surplus of about 800KWh per annum. I have the capacity to add another 1.1KW of capacity to my home system (which would increase my surplus by 1600KWh) but thanks to the way the Spanish system charges for grid connection I'd need to pay €184 for my "upgrade" and an additional 11c a day fixed charge + the cost of panels and installation etc. As I'm not really going to see any benefit personally I'm not going to do it. If the system was more equitable - if the 8c a KWh was simply directly credited to your account and could be applied against fees and taxes, for instance, then I'd be happy to do the upgrade and Endesa could make 11c a KWh profit on 2400KWh.

@@benicabanas9793 It is not so important, that politic leaders know other languages, for they count with translators. Indeed, there are international leaders who "rely" on translators although they can fully understand and speak the given language. Why? It is a sign of respect for the same citizens of their countries, as they are not forced to know English, French or German. Politics consist also of rituals and symbols. Anyway, Feijóo's and Rajoy's generation did not take lessons of foreign languages. Perhaps French, but English was far to be a diplomatic language. If a wide range of skills in foreign languages were a condition to occupy high positions in the Administration, surely will be a KZread's polyglot the best option, or?

That oil isnt really profitable. First because most depots are in European russia or siberia close to the ourals... and needs to be transported all the way to eastern China jumping LOADS of geographical impediments, which makes it more expensive (more of the same to reach India). But Russia becoming dependant on just China would be catastrophic for Russia as they entire economy would depend on China. So the Russians will, once the war is over to recover their grip on providing energy again to the European markets.

I am from Saudi Arabia. I am an Arab and we have history in Spain. We study history from when we were young and know the cities, valleys and rivers in Spain. And the geographical location, I tell you, is that Spain is working at half its potential. as a geographical location. The Spaniards should look at the sun and head to the east because the second half of it is there. Arabs love Spain. Especially in the Arabian Gulf. They are rich countries. The Spaniards do not understand this and support Spain and Spanish companies with government contracts, such as building railways and trains, and they gave Spain. Contracts in the billions, but as soon as the contract ends, shouldn’t they go unlike the Chinese, Americans, and Koreans?
