We also know the ‘powers that be’ want the SLS to receive some positive press because that’s how these power-hungry politicians get their sickening over-fill of fraudulent funds….allegedly. I do agree that STARSHIP isn’t ready, but it was. 4/20 was ready to try, but it’s likely it wasn’t…but with permission I’m certain Elon would have pushed the button, if for no other reason, to just see what happens. In my view, the absolute key reason why NOT to fly is that Stage 0 is just too damned expensive and would take way too much time to repair if the ship underwent a RUD sitting on the OLM. We've all seen how long it has taken to construct the OLM. It is, by far, the most complex and intricate system of the entire operation, ships and boosters included.

  • @mirandahw

    @mirandahw

    2 жыл бұрын

    It'd (theoretically, ignoring the fact it can't) launch from Suborbital B which is pretty far away from S0, so that shouldn't be too big of an issue bar an SN4-style RUD right at the point of maximum prop load. All of S0 would probably be fine-ish and the suborbital stuff is completely separate from the orbital stuff anyway

    I agree with your points. While we would love to see a launch at this time, it's best for them to concentrate on testing ground support systems and making changes there to give it the best shot when the time comes to head skywards. They have more data than anyone when it comes to good space flight and return. Okay, it's only a "broomstick" but that data is important and I should imagine some of it is scaleable. Time will tell and it will all be worth the wait regardless of where they launch from.

    In my opinion, testing ships with raptor 1's probably isn't needed anymore but I do think that they should do at least one super heavy hop. Technically the thing has never flown or static fired like starship has, going straight to orbit seems like a stretch without having both articles thoroughly tested with flight data. Although I guess we've all come to appreciate the ability of spacex to do this fast by letting things blow up

  • @mirandahw

    @mirandahw

    B3 static fired with three R1's. B7 or B8 (depending on how B7's surgery goes) will static fire before the orbital flight... They're not just gonna go 0 to 100. As for hopping SH, they just don't have the infrastructure there, plus it is EXTREMELY dangerous to do (much more propellant needed to test SH = bigger boom).

  • @Myrddnn
    @Myrddnn2 жыл бұрын

    I agree. This is a NEEDED test flight. Elon is giving the FAA the breathing room to get over their dislike for him and approve the site for test flights. His patience here should pay off soon. I will add that further test firings of R1.x aren't needed. Tests of R2 are. Best outcome for S20 would be to wind up at the Brownsville Airport as an exhibit. Barring that, burst test.

    Eh, I would not say that the FAA dislikes SpaceX, since they approved the SN9 launch in Feb 2021 after the SN8 unauthorized flight. The FAA also defended SpaceX in front of Congress over the unauthorized SN8 flight in Jun 2021. The FAA is the lead agency with NASA, the Army Corps of Engineers, the US Coast Guard, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, and the National Park Service all involved from the beginning. Dangerous test flights have been around for a long time, so as long as the public is not involved, the FAA likely isn't anymore concerned than NASA over the robust test program. Boca Chica village is close to the launch site, so that has likely the FAA concern over RUDs affecting it. The US Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Park Service are the ones to have concerns over the wildlife and park areas around Boca Chica, so the FAA may have concerns for that, because other agencies have concerns. I agree on Raptor 1. It caused the failures of 4 of the 5 landing attempts. Move on to Raptor 2 testing. Brownsville Airport does want a Starship, so there are 3 candidates for that.

    Agreed. There's the risk of damaging launch infrastructure with every test. To take that risk, the value of the data gained should be maximal. They gain the most valuable information by flying the most up to date model and putting it through as many phases as it can get through. That's why it makes sense to go for orbit, because you test more phases for the same launch risk.

    The impact crash of a large/bulk object in velocity of *hyper* sonic speed, can be *huge devistating* results, this is why for so long, the FAA had to delay this attempt. How to reduce these risk? For one, the task will have to be divided, instead of a full plung to the landing spot, Starship stage two, will have to use *much more* fuel yeild of speed, AFTER the re-enter burn effects, as the HS tiles being the prime objectives of THAT single task, so the sonic boom/crash isn't amplified on Earth. The NEXT divided test, is the classic, gravity fall ratio of Mars, which is quite low, being that landing acrobate of extreme criticle risk fuel, since that part has been tested (last year), it would be another test-2 of for a radicly new/added ship model tweak (Mechazilla choptix). A third task/test, of RISK time duriation launch scrubb, this one is actually a 'concept-task,' that *double full-set starhip Refuel & Refill (of 02/human cargo resources) with t-minus *future weather kind* conditions scrubb, WHILE astronauts being *delay lost* in orbit. This is ALL due to the fact, the BEAST, is NOT able to take stage two, to FULLY parked in *orbit velocity* ...resulting in a 3rd STAGE flight, JUST to change that idea.

    Starship 20 would be ripped to smithereens. It's just a mockup-vehicle to get the boosters airworthy. It's flawed in every way possible. I am totally excited about Booster, that'll get necessary tonnage up in space. A beefed up version of dragon plus a good ol' second stage will work out. Put that on top of booster and then we' ll be getting somewhere

    The tiles on ship 20 are too fragile and fall-off very easily. The loss of one or two tiles would cause hot plasma to burn through the steel fuselage and would eventually lead to the ships loss. It would be very difficult to get any useful data from the debris that didn't burn-up on re-entry and was strewn across a large swath of the pacific. They need to work on the thermal system a bit more.

    Would Raptor V1 be a reason not to launch, if it's not the engines they need to test? They've got plenty of the things they need to do something with...

    If its just going to be scrapped anyway, why not fly it to get as much value out of the investment as you can. If it goes BOOM then nothing's really lost. Except... The investment needed in potential clean up...

    And maybe (as rightly indicated in the video) some confidence from the authorities and general public is lost in their ability to safely operate a launch site in the area. That could affect future operations a lot.

    Tests can be endless. He does real.. REAL flight tests. Reason 1: to land a Raptor is most important. Reason 2: to test full rocket you have to PRODUCE the full rocket. Reason 3. IT IS EXPENSIVE. And he paid taxes. Or could test it all. Well.. Wanna test? PAY YOUR OWN MONEY

    Nah. Remember that a few Starships are expected to be lost, and if not will just be retired pretty quickly anyway. Add to that the fact that much more data will be obtained from an orbital flight, and there we are. I'm quite sure they won't want to lose a booster (other than the first one maybe -- but is that plan going to change now that it's a more developed version with Raptor 2s?), but the booster flight already is basically a hypersonic suborbital flight. And SpaceX *knows* reusable boosters, so there's no reason to pull punches on the testing.

    Should SpaceX shift production to the Cape? I know they are currently building there, but still seems like the bulk of construction is in Boca. The Cape is a sure thing, they can launch there, Boca is a question mark. So much fear, uncertainty, and doubt when waiting on approval from a government entity (private entities are powerless, all they can do is wait and hope).

    At the cape they have to deal with the Air Force and all the other companies launching from there. It means endless delays. The weather at the cape doesn't make it any easier.
