When I had my follow up visit three months after having a dental implant installed, the dentist said "WoW!! I have never seen Less union between the jaw bone and the implant post." That is how I found out that I had diabetes in 2017. He decided to take the implant post out of the lower right section of my jaw.

I've never been afraid of the dentist and always took very good care of my teeth, yet at 35 almost all my bottom teeth are gone😔I believe genetics are the #1 factor for me, but no one wants to talk about that.

Hi Jenn. Thanks for sharing your story. You are right, genetics can have a big impact on tooth loss. I did not include it on my list because there’s not much one can do about their genes. Having weak enamel, sticky teeth, high bleeding levels, crooked teeth, etc. are all genetic elements that contribute to tooth loss. Which one do you think was the cause of your tooth loss?

Some people are afraid of the dentist because their parents took them to the cheapest dentist instead of the best possible dentist. Remember that if you are now an adult living independently, you have the power to pick your own dentist. Ask as many questions as you feel necessary to allay your fears when looking for a new dentist.

I've lost most of my teeth since 2014 . I was told it's because of my medication I take for Heart Problems ..

Hi Susan. I'm so sorry to hear about your cause of tooth loss. You have a great point, it's not just illicit drugs that can cause tooth loss, but there are numerous prescription drugs that impact your teeth and gums. There are countless prescription drugs that lead to dry mouth, accelerating tooth decay and gum disease. Heart medications can also affect your potassium levels which further impacts your jawbone. What were the names of the medications you were taking, or at least the ones which you felt were responsible for your tooth loss?

Got my tooth pic, mouth wash twice floss as much as possible.

In my experience, I got weight loss surgery ( lap band) in 2012, over eating my food, throwing up every day, causing my teeth to start chipping off slowly. Soon as that first front tooth, chipped off, I ran to the dentist and replaced all with over dentures ☺️

Hi KN. How are you doing with your overdentures? Are you glad you removed your teeth? Gastrointestinal issues can damage teeth and lead to tooth loss. Sometimes you can fix these damaged teeth by performing root canals, crowns, etc. Other times the teeth end up so severely damaged that extraction is the best option. Thanks for sharing!

Even though I had good dental hygiene as a child I always seemed to need fillings . I also had severe anemia although why I had anemia was never determined . I became pregnant at 16 and suffered from HG severe sickness all through the pregnancy and became very anemic again . I believe that was the start of my toothy troubles , a further two pregnancies later again HG throughout both of them and more anemia and my teeth began to fail . A serious illness in my late 20’s almost cost me my life through organ failure and severe blood loss and bingo ..my first denture at the age of 28‼️. I am 62 now and only have 6 teeth left in my head , tooth loss isn’t always caused by poor dental hygiene folks , i really wish there wasn’t this unhealthy stigma regarding dentures and denture wearers ….

Hi Sue. Thank you for sharing your story. I have heard from several patients how pregnancy accelerated their dental issues. Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), which is nausea and vomiting during pregnancy, can be one reason for this. Bleeding gums and loss of nutrients can be the other reason. My recommendation is to brush your teeth vigorously after every bout of vomiting. Long term exposure to acids in vomit is very detrimental to oral health. Also, take prenatal vitamins if you need them. Lastly, consider getting a good dental cleaning from your dentist during the second trimester. If your gums are bleeding profusely, then use a mouthwash (peroxide/baking soda based is best).

For me during my teen years every time I went to the dentist something was wrong with my teeth. So I got annoyed then I was afraid to go because of that reason. Then as I got older life happened then I just neglected myself for many years. So Now in my late 40s I need dentures and a partial. The cost is a lot yet that is my fault. 🤦🏾‍♀️

Hi Marquisa. Thanks for sharing your story. It appears that your cause of tooth loss had to do with poor prior dental experience. I get it, if you have to get a needle and drilled every time you go to the dentist, it can really impact your perception of the dentist. I’m sorry you had to go through this experience. Hopefully you can find a good dentist and salvage the teeth you have remaining.
