If you visit the Hemingway Home and Museum in Key West, Florida, you can learn all about Ernest Hemingway, the man who is considered one of the greatest authors of the 20th century. However, if you’re not into the whole literature thing, you can also see a lot of six-toed cats on the grounds, too.
The technical name for the felines' condition is polydactyly, but don’t worry about the six-toed cats you see. That's because it doesn’t cause them any pain or other serious issues. What was the author’s connection to these felines and why are there so many at the home today? Let’s take a look at why there are so many six-toed cats living at the Hemingway House.

@Grunge My in-laws started wintering in Key West in the early ‘80s, around the time my husband and I met. (Now we snowbird there.) So we’ve been visiting a long time. My husband is allergic to cats; HemHouse used to let me bring in our then-little kids free to see the cats, if we’d promise not to take the tour. Now I visit (or did, until the virus), and if I wear one of their shirts, I’m let in free as a “local.” Wonderful to read in the garden, admire the cats, and schmooze with the visitors!
I went to the Hemingway House for my buddy's wedding. That place is absolutely beautiful and the cats are very sweet.
Never been to the Hemingway House, but many years ago I acquired (found abandoned in a field) a wee little kitten, that hadn't even opened his eyes. So...took him home & he was officially christened "Gus Gus". Gus had the classic polydactyly, and could articulate his extra sub-paws on his front feet like thumbs. What made things even more interesting, was that he had no idea he was a cat, which led to some interesting experiences with social behavior. But, in the true Hemingway oeuvre, he spread his polydactyly polyamorously, and before long there was a population explosion of Hemingway cats here on the Left Coast. Sadly, we discovered a dietary issue with cats, namely that if their diet has too much grain & magnesium they can develop bladder stones which, in Gus's case proved to be fatal. Tip o' the top hat to ol' Gus Gus, very much a cat's cat.

To keep the line of the first Hemingway cat going. I've been to the Hemingway house and it was cool to learn about him the cats and the original owners.
My family had a Hemingway cat with the 6 toes on each front paw. His name was Santiago, in honor of Ernest's ties to Cuba. He lived to the age of almost 22. My now late mom missed him greatly after his passing & vowed to NEVER own any more cats. Of course, she ended up with 2 MORE, which I now possess & take care of - at least until I move in the near future....
We rescued and rehomed a poly kitten - I named him Yogi because it looked like he had catcher's mitts on his front paws. The name stuck 💕

My girlfriend and I adopted a Hemingway tabby a few years ago and his original name was Yogi 🙀
The Hemingway's cats still continuing their lineage even after the owner dies. Even more amazing the cats still live at their owner's house.
A very beautiful tranquil place. Loved seeing these cuties enjoying their property and the kitty cams. Love it !!!

I was stationed in Key West for a few years and, those kitties are protected by city, county, state and federal law. God is the only one who can help you if you harm one, and you better not be trying to take one home.

My cat just got babies and 2 of them got 6 toes and they were born Christmas, I was 😲 shocked when I saw them toes ,it blew my mind
My neighbour’s cat have 6 toes on all four paws too. Cat name is Polly and she is calico cat

My polydactyl is also named Polly. I wanted to name her booger but my aunt vetoed that. Love that damn cat💙💙💙💙

My family had a black cat with six toes on both his front paws. He looked like he was wearing a pair of mittens lol and he could really use those things almost like thumbs.
I had a 6 toed cat ^.^

Im I the only one that found weird that he was turn down from the military bc of poor eyesight then accepted as an ambulance driver?? Lol that's like me being limped fort life and getting a job as marathon runner 🤔😅
