I went there as a teen. Lots of cat. Hemmingway loved cats! There was one cat that was the last survivor of when the Old Man lived there. It was about 20 years old, an orange tabby, and could not meow anymore.

Hemingway moved into the “Finca Vijia) in Havana Cuba and lived there for 30 years. He had many cats and dogs but I doubt he abandoned any animals at his Key West home. You should check out Hemingway’s pool there, looks just like one you showed here.

Thanks for the tour. I visited Key West once but never saw Hemingway's house and I don't know why. Now, I'll probably will never get back there. The cats supposedly all have 6 toes on each foot. It's good to see the house has withstood all the hurricanes that have wiped out so much of the other places on the Keys.

Thank you for this lovely video. I've lived in Florida for many years now, South West, Central and North East and nothing compares to the beauty and natural elegance of Key West! Especially when it was a quiet little key and Hemingway escaped there to write. Your voice eloquently guided me through the house I've always wanted to visit. It was such a pleasant tour, I dare say you should have been the one doing it instead of the gentleman from Ohio. Not to mention I simply adore the Hemingway cats!💜😼💙 I hope to see more videos and hear about your latest journeys. Spot on! Also, as a child my grandfather would regularly play the storyteller Tom T. Hall and his many adventures with all sorts of animals and I just noticed your name is Tom Hall. Not sure if he's any relation but you certainly have the same golden voice as he did. Much luck to you Tom!

$20,000 was a lot of money for an inground pool in the 1930s. I vaguely remember there is a 1937 wheat penny that stuck in a concrete along the pool decking, Hemingway, sticking it in the wet cement, saying “she got every other penny, I had“, referring to his wife and the cost of the pool so he decided to throw the last one into the cement.

Correction : Hadley was not his girlfriend, she was his first wife who lived in Paris with him and "Bumby", his first son. The other women on the wall were also his wives. Mary (whom he called Miss Mary) was the last one. She was awakened by the shotgun blast the morning he killed himself, in Ketchum. Two things you didnt show us were the penny embedded in a tile near the pool. This is related to the time when he returned from covering an assignment for the papers (may be the Spanish Civil War) and finding that his wife had the pool built, which, as you said, cost $20,000 in the 1930s. A fortune for the time. He became angry and started yelling at her that "as long as you're going to spend all my money, you might as well take my last pennies !" Then he took the change from his pocket, a few pennies, and threw them at her. She picked one up and had it put into a tile, which is still there. The other item you left out was the urinal from Sloppy Joe's Bar, where he would go after his daily writing. One late night, after much drinking, he went to the toilet and after urinating, it occurred to him that he'd spent so much time drinking in the bar through the years, that he'd actually paid for the urinal, so he tore it off the wall and carried it home on his shoulder. The urinal is also someplace on the property, stuck to a wall outside, for all to see. You missed it. But this is the first time Ive gone inside his home, even though I lived in Key West from December 1960 to June 1966, where I spent muy teen years and have been there many times. Never went to Hem's house. I did see the Audubon House on a school trip while in junior high. What happened to the "cat walk" that used to go from the house to his writing room ? Was it destroyed ???

One of his sons tells the story of being outside this house in the yard playing and they (the children) were being too loud and their father came out on the balcony and yelled at them to be quiet he was trying to write!!!! Ernest Hemingway was trying to write! Somebody’s dad just happens to be Ernest Hemingway who was trying to write! Gets me every time I think of it.

When Ernest was in his early 20's he came by train to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan , to a town called Seney, he got off and asked where would their be some good fishing at, the person said over by where the train crosses the Fox river, story has it, he wrote a book called "The Big Two Hearted River" he lay against a tree and caught some Trout, but many wondered why he didn't call the book, "The Fox River" The Big Two Heart River is some 25 miles or more away, makes you wonder ?

Have been to Key West 3 times and have visited the Hemingway house 3 times. My next trip to the Keys is planned for mid-June and likely another visit to the house. Hadley was in wife not girlfriend in Paris. The tour guides can be inconsistent with their info so you may wish to do some of your on research. I would definitely challenge the assertion that Hemingway did 70% of his life's work while he lived in Key West, but whatever puts Key West in the best light. Right?

I wish people who make videos of historic homes of influential people would do their homework first. A movie is not doing your homework. Hadley Richardson was his first wife. No mention of Hemingway's comment about the pool and his last dime. Hemingway often stood at a desk writing for hours.

Actually he didn’t steal it. According to the Florida Historic Society one drunken night he and Sloppy Joe himself carried it over after Hemingway himself had exclaimed to Joe (real name Joe Russell) one night…”I’ve pissed away so much money in this place I ought to have that”. Since Joe was moving the joint to a block away…where the rent was cheaper…he agreed and off it went to the 6 toed kitties.
