Why Smart People Believe Stupid Things (with Dr. Michael Shermer)

Every day, we see intelligent people embracing unintelligent things. They're skeptical in some areas of their lives, gullible in others. They seem to shift from logical to illogical at the drop of a hat.
Maybe this refers to another. Perhaps it describes ourselves.
In this conversation, Seth Andrews speaks with Dr. Michael Shermer of Skeptic Magazine about belief, intelligence, religion, conspiracy theories, and the brain.

None of us are immune to cognitive biases, but we CAN be aware of what they are and monitor our thinking processes to ensure that we avoid them as much as possible, and apply critical thinking (the bullshit detection kit) to every area of our lives. So I find myself in complete agree with Dr. Shermer, I see no reason why we can't apply the principles of science and healthy skepticism to areas where they are not currently applied.

As a psychologist I want to add that labels are something that are hard to circumvent. Though no one fits a box perfectly it is in most cases better to have multiple boxes then just one big box. In the last decade we started to use more solution based therapy, asking what a person would like to achieve in the upcoming period, what he hopes to accomplish with therapy. This filters out people that don't have goals because they feel alright.

Look around the world, in this critical time (COVID-19), and think about how many people _don't_ believe because the _don't_ (or simply _refuse to)_ understand. In many cases...often _including_ religion...it is the _lack_ of understanding that _preserves_ belief. Though, as I think about it, that approach is often the result of some _other_ belief they've adopted (upon understanding what they _heard_ rather than _actually_ understanding), which then supersedes the willingness (or even _ability)_ to the understand.

A truly smart person will always say "Really?" and they are prepared to abandon any belief should convincing evidence present itself. If you value faith too much, you run the danger of becoming so irrational you will agree with the statement, "If reality contradicts my faith, I will concludes that reality is wrong." If you declare that you would not abandon your faith no matter what evidence is presented, you are, in fact, declaring that if reality contradicts your faith, reality must be wrong.

I always seem to find the right Seth interview when I need it. Thanks for this talk! The biggest thrill for me in this episode was the idea of "how do we remove cognitive bias from our lives?". You nailed it. Shermer dodged it but then came back with, lamentably, a fluffy sociology answer. I want the real answer, at the neuroscience level. How do we redirect dopamine flow? This is the biggest question I think we can answer, the biggest challenge we can address: curing cognitive bias.

Point at about 21:20 I'll offer contrary evidence OK I know this video was posted a few years back... but so was this incident I was involved with. I used to work at one of the top universities in the world (in the top 100) and among my many duties and roles was 1: teaching laboratories manager. 2: Facilities (building) administrator, and 3: part of the OHS team. one day we had our fire suppression system's diesel pump plant regular test, but unbeknown to us while the test technician HA, correctly, isolated that wings fire detection and alarm system (as the activation of the pump system would normally activate a "Code Red" to the fire brigade) , for reasons even they couldn't explain, they had failed to isolate and turn off that wing of the building's HVAC resulting in expelled fumes and smoke from the pump being drawn back in to the building but obviously smoke alarms not being activated. The result was a number of teaching areas and labs full of diesel fumes and smoke thick enough to actually see tendrils and clouds..... and inhibit visibility. As we activated our evacuation process I came in to the labs and found not one single student or tutor had started to evacuate, in fact not one single person had even started to leave despite several minutes of black smoke pouring in to the rooms and the classes were preceding as usual. When the OHS team told everyone they had to leave the comment from 2 of the 3 classes was that there was no fire alarm so they didn't need to evacuate.... these are some of the smartest people on the planet, many of the tutors are PHD students, the lecturers included a Nobel prize nominated scientist.... and yet they all sat there in increasingly toxic smoke. Even after we started to physically eject laggards some students refused to leave the labs, this was only solved by me returning to my computer and issuing a remote force shutdown (power down) on all lab computers..... smart people doing stupid things

Idk what your definition of thick smoke is, so idk. But Perhaps smarter people who are used to people saying nutty things and/or used to fire alarms going off for reasons not related to a fire chemistry labs are kind of prone to that type of thing (or for a test/drill like you said was scheduled that day), they eventually get sick of the crap and start to ignore it... So when something that might actually be serious happens they dont do anything, smart or not, they get irritated with the "boy who called wolf" crap. And it was a test day, usually you have to let people know a fire drill is going on, so that gives them even less reason to take some smoke seriously

  • @TheRealMarxz

    @TheRealMarxz

    3 жыл бұрын

@@mbburry4759 no, no fire drill test, no alarm test and no evacuation drills of any sort that day (not sure how you got that idea as there is no such statement in my OP), it was test of the sprinkler system's booster diesel engine that ran a water pump (an engine in a room in a basement below the teaching spaces) And in fact if you read the OP there was NO ALARM at all because it had been isolated and the LACK of an alarm was why the students chose not to evacuate not some sort of alarm fatigue. By thick dark brown smoke as in enough to obscure vision to less than 20 meters, enough that waving your hands in in it caused visible smoke swirls also noxiously enough to cause some people to cough and gag enough to obscure writing on whiteboards in these small teaching rooms. Also in this case this was in an economics and finance teaching lab in a commerce school building, so trust me on this, so not some sort of usual affair for for that building (and not even usual in a real chemistry lab - where you might get a few whiffs of smoke but not something that would stop you from seeing the white board 10 feet away without an evacuation order there as well)

I am smart so they would find some job for me that did not involve killing ("Thou shalt do no murder") or I would hope so. It's funny that this guy is sort of pumped up as a guy who steps back and look at things analytically. I think he IS smart and does this, apparently. Maybe even 99% of the time. But, I would argue that the term "conspiracy theory" OR "conspiracy theorist" have become SO SCREWED up, that to question ANYTHING, automatically throws you into that category. Michael Shermer is right on that path too. THAT is not a good place for US to be. It funnels people like sheep into NOT questioning anything. So having said that, the SCIENCE of demolition and buildings falling all the way to the ground within their own foot print, SHOULD be the focus of the 9-11 events. WORLD HISTORY: No steel-framed building has EVER fallen to the ground from fire... EVER... ANYWHERE. Then it suddenly happens within hours, 3 times in one day? Yeah, right. In the mean time the IDs from the "hijackers floats to the ground IN TACT. Yeah, right. There have been steel framed buildings completely engulfed in HOT, bright fires with plenty of oxygen, See "Madrid Hotel fire". The result was slow structure degradation, causing slumping (unsymmetrical) over MANY hours (like 12+). So SOME collapse did occur, like half of 7 floors or so, on ONE side of the building. But for a building to completely disintegrate all at once, can ONLY be caused by planned demolition with explosive charges. PERIOD. Another Atheist, whom I respect a lot (with the exception of his view on 9-11) is Matt Dillahunty from "The Atheist Experience". As far as I know he STILL won't talk about the details or science about 9-11. He thinks it's an OPEN and SHUT case. So, just like the content of THIS video, he and also Michael Shermer apparently cannot handle the truth. Their brains are not ready for the science and the details.

I would just like to point out fucking planes hit them that alone changes the science your taking a direct hit from a plane could bend metal then you have several floors collapsed in on themselves the weight would cause it to crumble with failing support you could also have ground floor support beams yanked up out of place leaving the entire structure compromised, but don't take it from me I lack education in this subject i can only point out you lack the perspective to even know all possibilities.

I really enjoy much of what Michael has to say in all the appearances I've seen him on KZread. However it really irks me when he lumps 9/11 with all the other woowoo and pseudoscience.. If building #7 experienced a 10second implosion following an office fire caused by smoldering debris from the towers, than the architects and engineers responsible for its construction should be held responsible for the financial and cost of lives. If it was controlled explosives, shouldn't the American people know?

Yeah, I love his work (Moral Arc is an incredible read, as are many of his other books), but that's where I stray from him too. That, and his economic views, but that's something I can more easily look past. The Building 7 thing is the reason why I wonder what happened on 9/11, bc I don't really buy any of the accounts I've read, but I know I can't accept the official account with building 7..

These two are quite a stretch from being as intelligent as they would like to think. I'm first to admit, I am not that smart either, I am most likely very stupid by comparison to Shermer. He is debunking 9/11 as a mere falsity of psychological phenomena, something like that. This guy does exactly what he so arrogantly claims to witness in the behavior of other people, he overrides or skips the part where you're supposed to construct a solid argument by shifting to enforce his belief as superior almost as if he's saying "come on you smart people know I'm right". Now I understand he is expecting everything that he says to be taken as the correct answer because of the setting, but still it's quite pathetic and I wouldn't consider it a very fruitful way to criticize. You see this a lot, a Dr. this and that given elevated authority to propose opinions, it's a free pass to dismiss reasoning. It's ironic how he spoke bad of Ben Carson doing an error by speaking in television, for I don't see how his comments are any better. I'm not a huge fan of Dr.Carson. But unlike this guy, Dr.Carson helped to contribute to something meaningful besides his normal practice. Now Michael all you did was play ball with another "skeptic" as you like to compliment each other. Pardon my English if it is flawed as it's not my mother tongue. Only reason I have to comment is that I think their type of thinking is defective, and it's grotesque the way these guys like to circle jerk.

I love this, if we evolved morality to help us flourish as species, than there are points where we can measure how successful specific moral points are. It's still "subjective" in the sense that the same moral principles might not help another species flourish, but we CAN find out what is empirically best for our species. Some morals WILL outperform others.

I saw him on some British reality show where he was talking to a bus load of assorted conspiracy theorists, and the ones that knew who he was, hated him before he showed up, and after he talked to them, almost all liked him and thought he brought up relevant points. Skeptic magazine is the best.

Michael has dug his grave historically by this and many other things he said without thinking about it very much.
