John Glover's Lionel Luthor wasn't supposed to be but in a few episodes. He was so amazing at the role that they decided they HAD to keep him around for more. And yes, Rosenbaum played the best Lex Luthor on screen.

Gene Hackman was excellent! For the 2006 movie, "Superman Returns", they tried to bring Hackman back, but he declined. Hackman's lines in the 1980s were really good ones. "Kill Lex Luther, the greatest criminal mind of the twentieth century!". Michael Rosenbaum is the only viable Lex Luther with Hackman no longer interested in this acting role anymore. How there can be a Superman movie or show without Michael Rosenbaum is really a disappointment. Without a star bad guy, no show is worth watching. Hackman and Rosenbaum were the top two Lex Luther actors. Smallville's best character was Lex Luther and Rosenbaum was simply exceptional in his role. So the only viable actor for a Superman Movie with a quality Lex Luther is really only Michael Rosenbaum.

Michael Rosenbaum brought a level of depth to the character that separated Lex from the simplistic template of "Evil Industrialist". Lex wasn't evil solely on the basis of possessing wealth and ambition. They merely facilitated his descent.

This has been my feelings for years!!! Lex was probably one of the main reasons I kept watching Smallville. And watching the relationship between Lex and Clark over the course of the series was probably another. I loved watching Lex start off as this guy that seemed so good and slowly watch how he becomes the bad guy everyone knows from Superman. And Michael portrayed that damn near perfectly. It makes it hurt more in the feels too watching Lex descend into evil knowing he was good once, that he wasn’t always evil.

Meh... Clark is and always will be the villain. The meteor showers and the resulting meteor freaks and extraterrestrials trying to destroy everything on occasion are all kind of, all his fault. And his self-righteousness is just plain fucking annoying. He needs to get the hell back to his fucking planet, or at least rebuild it, and take all his extraterrestrial aliens with him.

Smallville acting in general was great.

How to make a tragic villain who is still a villain. No one treated him well. Lex was betrayed and lied to at every turn. After a while, it was all he understood.

@@YTSFACTS4444 and what’s crazy is that Lex found out about Clark twice from what I remember, then Lex would lose his memory and forget. On the episode when Lex split in to two people GOOD AND EVIL. The Evil Lex was so upset with Clark because of the lies and hated his Good half for being so gullible and still having Clark’s back. The other one was when Lex was locked up in Belle Reve and Clark broke him out. Even after witnessing that Lex would not use him for his powers Clark still didn’t tell him.

I love lex luthor from smallville, Rosenbaum did the great job...

I felt sorry for Lex many a time when he tried to do the right thing.

It's not even close. Michael's take on Lex was perfect, and his acting was so good. Like when he was on the island and went nuts, so good

Easy to say Smallville have the best Clark, Lex, Lana, Pete, Jonathan and Martha Kent, Lionel and absolutely the best Lois Lane.

Micheal Rosenbaum was formal and I love that and btw he was always calm and good in smallville!! Plus he was the best!!!

My dad went to highschool with him and it is funny because my dad called him Rosey as a nickname.

Those 2 Luthor's is what kept me watching! I loved seeing them go at it.

im rewatching smallville now and noe that im oldet I appreciate him so much more. hes an amazing Lex and needs to reprise his role in another movie

This was aesthetically the best looking Lex for the role IMO. Everybody else with their bald heads looked like they were forcing it and Jon Cryer looks the worst as Lex in my opinion. Jesse Eisenberg with his wild hair and twitchy-ness was a god awful Lex and better fit as a "Joker". Michael Rosenbaum just naturally looks like the best Lex.

Rosenbaum deserves a big film role as Lex, his peformance is unmatched by a large margin, and in a VERY flawed show he shines especially brightly

If they cast Michael as Lexi in a film we would all lose our minds and would come out in droves to see HIM lol not Superman, unless, he was played by Tom.

There's no doubt some of the other actors are amazing, but the creators of the show hit it creating a strategic, intelligent, machiavellian Lex, instead of the traditional mad scientist kind of Lex, and Michael played it perfectly.

This type of portrayel of lex has actually been the most common portrayel of Lex in comics and cartoons since the 80s. The "mad scientist" characterization is the original portrayel in the 40s era (he even had hair, and was only known as "Luthor").

I've never been much of a superhero geek, so when I watched through Smallville last month I went in with no preconceptions on who was the best at (and not much knowledge on Superman in general...I knew like 4 big things, 5 tops). That being said, even I knew that Rosenbaum did an amazing job as Lex (I basically fell in love with his character the second I saw him). I will die on the hill that Lex would not have gone evil if Clark had told him his secret (I do understand why Clark wasn't telling anyone...but my point stands)

Love his lex luther. He knocks it out of the park way better than anyone else.

He was absolutely phenomenal. Genuinely one of the best performances of ANY well known and repeatedly cast antagonist that I can recall - he commanded every scene he was in. A criminally under-utilised acting talent.

I think I speak for some many fans when I say that DC needs to hire Michael Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor for future movies and/or shows. Who's with me!?

I think it’s time we see a super man movie produced by the creators and writers of smallville, have the smallville cast in that movie, I think it’d be so good as everyone in smallville played there roles so well. I’d love to see it happen

Jon Cryer is definitely a close second, but Rossenbaum definitely deserves to be called number 1

I think there will never be a better Lex than Michael Rosenbaum and never a better Lionel like John Glover... the best Superman however is Christopher Reeve, and Tom welling played a fantastic role in an "younger superman" hes' the second best.

Surprisingly even with the little ive seen of him Cryers Lex is probably my second best after Michael.

As a younger Lex Luthor in the show, Rosy captured Lex luthor's essence very well. Being young and naive but still able to outsmart people who were trying to dupe him. He was always stabbed in the back and lied to. And he has the same stoic swagger that we get from the animated Lex Luthor. He also plays the white knight archetype very well. Described by the history professor in the third episode of season 5

Completely agree 100%!! Because they had the time to really develop Lex' character, thru his twisted abusive relationship with his dad and his own battle with inner demons and his friendship with Clark...I felt sorry for him half the time. Mind you, I'm the daughter of a narcissist...

I can't agree more. I feel the same about Tom Welling. We watched him grow up from young man to a man and the timing would have been perfect when Smallville ended to take up the mantle of Superman for the movies. Oh well. Anyways Michael Rosenbaum is equally the best Lex Luthor.

Micheal was eating well with the scripts for Lex Luthor until the later seasons. He delivered a top notch performance, and is probably one of the best developed antagonists in live action super hero fictional adaptations. Small moments like his time at the Kent farm where he showed what life could have been like if he had the chance to balance his world view and his approach to conflict. It was a rare opportunity, and I don't think we'll really see DC or Marvel spend so much time cultivating an antagonist the way they simmered the relationships in Smallville. A lot of credit has to go to the show creators who didn't lean into the vilification from the start and instead opted for a "justified from his perspective" approach that adds depth to the portrayals.

I want to see him as Lex again. Come on, DC!!

Michael Rosenbaum IS the best live-action Lex, period. Disagree with the analysis of John Shea though, who imo played him as extremely suave, charming and debonair (who is also my 2nd favourite portrayal). I agree Rosenbaum's performance was so nuanced, and one could feel sympathy towards at times, the actor himself has said he could bring out the intensity due to how he felt growing up and colud play off John Glover because of the relationship he had with his own father!

Rewatching now and was googling to see if others agree that he is the best. I think that is the best portrayal of Superman as well, even without a suit...

Not argument needed. Loved Rosenbaum as Lex. Very impressive acting and casting. I think the entire cast surprised me. And I'm a new fan. I thought every episode was gonna be cheesy but most of it was so good that I didn't even know I was watch an old early 2000 show at some points.

For me, it's either him or John Shea. For years, I would have definitely said John Shea. His gritty voice made him menacing and threatening, and he really played up the villainous side. The only criticism was that he should have shaved his head, but his character could have worn a toupee for public appearances. That could have also played up the two-faced nature of him. However, Michael Rosenbaum's Lex Luthor has definitely grown on me. He physically is the only one who looks the way that most of us think Lex Luthor is supposed to look, and he plays the role extremely well.

Michael was the best Lex but also feel like Tom Welling was the best Clark too. Will always wish we got the see Tom in a superman film in the costume and everything. If they did like a flash forward type movie that takes place like 20 years after Smallville ended and bring back both of them for their roles. Ahh if only...

Michael Rosenbaum is multitalented and multiskilled, such as being able to step into Lex Luthor's shoes. He is an actor that cares about pleasing the audience by focusing on portraying characters competently. Which is why he excels at acting.

Micheal Rosenbaum is the best Lex Luthor ever portrayal across all mediums. I agree that he was the best part of Smallville as well. The moment I saw him in the first episode, he already appeared to be much more charming and way more conniving and much more complex than any of the other portrayals. Even his walk , talk , the way he looks at people and the air her creates around him was full of charm which is exactly what a character like Lex needs. He didn’t need the whole 7 seasons to convince me he’s the better Lex. The first episode by itself was enough.

They did great job how or why Lex turned to evil/villain in the Superman saga, it was started with how his father treated him badly, only use him for his deviant purpose and when Lex need someone to hold on, his "brother", Clark keep pushing him away and their relationship is getting tenuous every season.

Joaquin Phoenix was offered the role of Lex Luthor in the Batman v Superman movie and turned it down.

Completely agree, however I believe A Vincent Onfrio portrayal of Luthor would rival Phoenix joker. Kingpin and lex Luthor share a lot of similarities but operate in different realms of power. Both are insane, but onfrios kingpin reminded me of Luthor, and arguably nailed the same role.

SMALLVILLE IS THE ORIGIN STORY OF THE BEST LEX LUTHOR EVER. Jesse Eisenberg is twitchy and he talks too fast like in every role he plays. Growing up like everyone, public speaking was a challenge. I overcame it because I would watch Smallville and just copy/mimick his manerisms along with George Clooney. Practicing in front of a mirror paid off since i eventually attended law school(JD & LLM).
