Why Sleep?: Matthew Walker's CNS 2019 Keynote

Can you recall the last time you woke up without an alarm clock feeling refreshed, not needing caffeine? If the answer is “no,” you are not alone. Two-thirds of adults fail to obtain the recommended 8 hours of nightly sleep. You may be surprised by the consequences, which Matthew Walker (University of California, Berkeley) describes in his keynote for the 26th annual Cognitive Neuroscience Society annual meeting. His talk describes not only the good things that happen when you get sleep but also the alarmingly bad things that happen when you don’t get enough. He discusses the brain (learning, memory aging, Alzheimer’s disease, education), and highlights disease-related consequences in the body (cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease). The take-home: Sleep is the single most effective thing we can do to reset the health of our brains and bodies.

It’s definitely a bigger problem then just adjusting the times of school. We need to completely rework our social system. From school start times to work start times, and work duration times. We need to be affective with a smaller window of time rather than thinking working more hours attributes to better work and more money. Horrible way we’ve gotten into.

Suggestion that a key part of the need for sleep is the body's need to make serotonin, which it does in a symbiotic relationship with gut bacteria in the large intestine. We sleep to first produce serotonin, then to draw it into the body through the extraction of water in the large intestine. Though it can be synthesized, there seems to be a major difference in the health benefits from the micro made serotonin, and the artificially made serotonin. Here's some notes on both how important serotonin is and how widespread it is in all living things. Besides mammals, serotonin is found in all bilateral animals including worms and insects,[19] as well as in fungi and in plants.[20] Serotonin's presence in insect venoms and plant spines serves to cause pain, which is a side-effect of serotonin injection.[21][22] Serotonin is produced by pathogenic amoebae, and its effect in the human gut is diarrhea.[23] Its widespread presence in many seeds and fruits may serve to stimulate the digestive tract into expelling the seeds.[24] Gut bacteria manufacture about 95 percent of the body's supply of serotonin, which influences both mood and GI activity.

In the waking state, thoughts come 'automatically' in our minds. For example, i myself don't know what thought will come into my mind say after 10 minutes, 20 minutes etc. When thoughts come automatically to our mind, it 'seems' to us that we have consciouly 'thought' them. Similarly, while sleeping also thoughts come 'automatically' to our minds.

Wonder about the affect of serotonin. This is made in virtually every plant and animal. It has massive benefits, and it may be directly connected to or helped made by our micro biome in the gut during sleep. It may be so important that it's the reason living things sleep.

The medical industrial complex's failure to properly research and diagnose and treat microbiome and sleep and vital nutritional deficiency issues (including those related to Vitamin D3 and Vitamin K2 and Magnesium deficiencies as well as iatrogenic prescription medication usage) is a major reason why psychiatric iatrogenesis is a primary contributor to the third leading cause of death in the U.S. (which is iatrogenesis in general). If the U.S. spent just a fraction of the over $40 billion each year it spends just on iatrogenic psychiatric drugs alone, on properly researching the issues discussed in this and related KZread presentations we would probably, Lord willing, achieve an absolute revolution in medical efficacy improvement and iatrogenesis reduction.
