Great review! Its amazing to see that 99% of critics love this little car. 4 days ago, I finally bought my 1M. Ive been obsessed with it since it was shown on Top Gear. Only 250 were sold in Mexico and I am so grateful I found it at a great price with very nice performance upgrades and decent mileage. It is a handful. The brakes have a noticeable loss of performance quite quickly after mild use- and that's the only reason I don't track it. Just a couple of warmup laps and the breaks feel 30% weaker. Gotta save for some good breaks :)

The only thing bad about this car: you can’t drive it without guilt. It’s a pure collectors car and-if objectively evaluated-should be placed in a museum somewhere.

@Eric Pratt .., I own a 2011 BMW 135i M-Sport Package. But, not having guilt when adding mileage to a 135i, isn't the same as adding it to a 2011 1M. Your guilt comparison isn't on the same level.

The 1M is by far one of the best M cars ever produced,very compact,nimble, and not overly powered...Great video bro👍👍👍

6:16 - incorrect. The turbos run in parallel, both the same size, one for the front 3 cylinders and the other for the rear 3.

Yes, I believe all N54 engines are, the 335i has the same parallel turbo setup, They're small turbos though and they spin up fast, with minimal turbo lag.

Got one and love it, nobody seems to want to touch the high mileage cars so you can bag a deal on them. Low mileage ones sticking around 48-50k in the past year, not sure they have much room to go higher in the near future with rising interest rates and the old brexit

The exige is a straight up track car, the 1m can still be used as a everyday car if you wanted too. If you want a race car experience the exige is nuts. But the 1m is still a mega drivers car that you can drive for hundreds of miles and get out and be fine without worrying about a broken back 😂

I agree, that's the reason I bought a 1M over a Exige or even a Cayman. Got a child seat in the back and I can use it for weekends away with my family. Once the kids are in bed, my wife relaxes with a g and t, then I go for a blast. Everyone is happy :-)

WRONG... yes there are TWI turbochargers, but they are the same size. Each one being powered by 3 cylinders. It's Parallel twin-turbo. The BMW 123d and 335d had one small and one big turbocharger as you described. From an 1M and M2 owner.

The two turbos... Are they sequential, as you describe, or are they equally big, taking care of 3 cylinders each?

@@philtechGT3 Exactly. But why say it's sequential in the video? No version of this engine has that. It's either twin scroll or two equal. He has done a lot of fiddling with turbos on his other cars, so he should know the difference.

Truly the only modern BMW of recent times I would give a thumbs up too. I question if this will be the last "raw" M car we will ever see. I know I said Stef don't get a BMW as did others but I revoke that comment. As long as it's a M1 Coupe and no other BMW 😂

Hey buddy. Of the 1 series, the coupe is the only one that I like. This one, for me the best thing of it is being manual but I personally think that BMW could have done a better job cuz they just put in a big engine but all the rest remained the same as any other 1 series. The interior (dash board and seats) are exactly the same as any other one...a bit too basic, specially the dash board. I've got a friend with a 120d coupe that is exactly the same as that one, even the wheels. The only difference is the engine. Bmw could at least fit it some nice recaro seats. Cheers mate

Stef ABtv Hi Stef. In the 1M, I think the alcantara seats looks nicer than leather seats. Here in Madeira where I live, there is only one of these in orange with the alcantara seats. Maybe because of the combination of colours it looks very sporty. This car with Recaro seats just like the ones in the Focus RS or Megane RS...would be something..

+Alexis Tosta the engine in the 1M isn't special. It's the same engine that was available in the 135 Coupe. The special parts are all the suspension, dampers, brakes, and differential which are taken directly from the E90 M3. This gives the car a much wider track and the handling is very direct. It's also the reason for the wide arches which look epic. I have the Alcantara BMW Performance seats in mine and I agree, they transform the interior, even if they aren't as comfortable or practical as the standard leather seats.

yetidh9 Hi mate. I think the alcantars seats are more confortable that the leather. At least they have more support. It is more or less like the A45 AMG. It is the same 2 litre Megane RS engine with some tricks and treats to it and goes all up to 380hp. Suspension, brakes etc are different and bigger of course. But the 1 series Coupe is the only 1 series I like. Cheers mate

Hey! Well I'm an average build and the Recaros don't give me as much support around the waist compared to the leather seats with the inflatable/adjustable side bolsters. There is a switch to pump them up to give more support. The support around the shoulders is better with the Recaros but they make it more difficult to get in and out due to the height of the side bolster. They are harder that the original seats and the angle of the seat base is fixed so they are probably comfortable for some people, not for others. They look awesome though, so I'm keeping them in :-) I'm not sure that you info about the Merc is correct. The M133 engine is unique to the A45 and is based on another Mercedes engine. Only the Renault diesel engines are used in the Mercedes A class range.

The brakes are fine ... Until you've done some hard driving with it or a trackday. Rubbish ... I'am running PFC brake discs and PFC pads with steel brakelines and it's perfect now !

Love the looks of a 1M, hate the looks of my 987.2 Cayman S. So I test-drove the 1M to chop in the Porker, but made the mistake of going there in the Cayman. In isolation the BMW is fine, but back to back the 1M was underwhelming. High seating, woolly steering, grabby brakes, notchy gear box. Sounds uninteresting too, not straight six-ish at all. Drove home happy in ugly Cayman.

The car isn't that pure. It has phone buttons on steering wheel. In this regard Toyota GT86 is more pure, as it has a round steering wheel without buttons.

@@StefABtv the buttons are just one example. The car is heavy with computers and warning lights and insulation and leather. Lots of things that dull the drivers touch.
