When you remember how Martina served, you'd be surprised as well😅. Martina wasn't very strong but she was super quick and was just as good of a returner as Serena. Maybe even better. That lady needed only the tip of her racket to return a ball with interest. Especially her backhand return down the line. At that time Serena's serve wasn't the lethal weapon yet. It was fast but easy to read and without much top spin. I think Martina tried to throw Serena for a loop. Making her start the match at her first finals. Martina already had gs titles and she was feeling pretty confident, after beating Venus in a marathon-match. I think she didn't expect Serena's reply. 'Wtf? This is YOUR first GS final? I'm supposed to psych YOU out!". Martina was quite the character..a bit of a prickly person with a sharp tongue. Had she not retired early, I think she and Serena could've actually been friends. They had a fiery rivalry but the drama kind of died down as they matured. They are both very opinionated and quick witted, they are extremely passionate on the court and they could not stand losing. Matches between them were always close.

@@aliciaknott8109I remember when they had their international debut, the pundits at Wimbledon were just 'mystified' by the Williams sisters. As mentioned, it was unusual that they didn't play juniors and they were a pretty close-knit unit. But when Venus made her debut....Wimbledon just melted. She made it through to the quarter finals on her debut but it was her personality that everybody fell in love with. The Williams' sisters were even referred to as 'our girls' by the Wimbledon commentators after a while. The way they would speak to them in interviews was almost like uncles and aunties wanting to know what their cousins were up to these days. They might have experienced less than welcoming crowds at times but Wimbledon has always been their 'home'.

Yeah. Serena and Venus were most loved at Wimbledon. Still are .I find the commentators and crowds at Wimbledon to be the best. Its all seems very traditional but its really laid back and the tradition is part of the fun. Wimbledon LOVED the Williams sisters. And they were so charming in interviews,,always in for a laugh. I will never forget how the crowd cheered when Venus won her first grand slam, after Serena's US open win. And how high she jumped for joy. I remember the commentator wondering if she broke the high jump record😅 at the ceremony when Venus had to give her on court speech, the microphone picked up when she told Sue Barker:" I really like your shoes". Sue Barker:"Ladies and gentlemen, she just won Wimbledon but Venus just complimented my shoes" The crowd:"YEEEEEEAAAAAAH!!!!" and Venus giggling.😂😂 They always had the Williams' sisters back. And were not shy to call out how they were treated in the US.

@@roddo1955 🥰I remember when Venue won too her reaction really was just at you described. I agree you kind of expect Wimbledon to be a bit snoby because of the tradition and things like the Royal Box but you are right it is incredibly relaxed and everyone's there to enjoy and take in the atmosphere as well as the tennis it's absolutely with paying and queuing for. I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't been!

As time moves on, we have better sports science, better training, the footage of all those who have come before to learn from, and with the growing population and popularity of a sport, in almost every case, the best player to ever live at that sport, is someone currently playing it. This is one of those rare cases, where that is simply not true. It could be decades until someone will come along, who will be better then Serina was in her prime.
