I gave in around 6 months ago and watched outlander. I love the show, but it made me angry! Angry that our culture, history and language are fading away! I was taught English and French and Spanish. I was taught about wars and battles that the English won! I wasn’t taught a single word in our language. I wasn’t taught in detail about the celts or Picts. I was taught my dialect was wrong! It’s ”cannot” not “canny”. At school it’s “yes sir” not “aye sir”, to talk “properly”...... We need to wake up and bring back our language, culture and history into schools or it’ll disappear forever.

I’m American of Scottish heritage (clan Lindsay). I love movies set in historical eras, especially movies about American and Scottish independence from the British. Movies like Rob Roy, Braveheart and the series Outlander. While these movies aren’t always 100% accurate historically, they help to ignite the passion in the current and even next generation to learn more about their heritage so that isn’t lost. We obviously can’t depend on our learning institutions to educate our children anymore. It is our responsibility to pass down the stories and lessons from the past.

Very much like native American children were taken away from their homes ,sent to boarding school ,not allowed to speak their language. Now this may not be the case anymore but since my mother taught in a school for both Aliut and Navaho children I saw that part which is like what you have experienced in Scotland. Thanks for educating us. I know about the conflict but mostly from the movies made. How do you feel about a separation to be independent and how do people generally feel? Speaking from Eastern USA,Pensylvania,or Penn's Woods ,as it means.

It is not just a devolution of culture in Scotland specifically. It is happening all over. Here in US we should technically be a walking cultural encyclopedia with so many hundreds of groups here, but alas we are not. All the wonderful cultures that came here from places like Scotland, Ireland, Germany etc have all washed away. I am of Irish, Swedish, English and German heritage. I try to inderstand these cultures and traditions but reading isn't like being exposed. It makes me mad we didn't fight harder here to honor these differences, instead punished the differences and meshed everyone into one. And by the way...Scottish accent is my favorite surpassed by my number 2 of Irish!

Just wondering, what did they teach you about Culloden? Was it like the over simplified view that they show in Outlander (where they make it very England vs. Scotland) or was it more of a well rounded/non-biased version (discussing the huge role religion factored into it and the fact not all Jacobite's were Scottish and that a big chunk of the British army that fought the Jacobite's at Culloden were actually Scots)? I've always wondered how it would be taught if we were taught about it, if politics and location (highland or lowland) would influence the way it was presented.

Very good to hear. Learning about our history is important but I hate when it's biased and leaves out important details (I do get the England vs Scotland aspect, but when it's presented as solely being about that it actually does so by erasing huge aspects of Scottish history. Jacobite's were willing to die for their cause, but many Scots were just as willing to die to fight against it).

Wow I can't believe that Scottish children are not taught about their own history. I'm Irish, Dublin born and like Caitríona Balfe I speak fluent Gaelic. In Ireland if you are born in the Republic (Éire) Gaelic is compulsory in school from kindergarten and you cannot get into a 3rd level University course without passing written and oral exams. Half our history classes are devoted to Irish history from prehistoric times to Modern Ireland. It's so essential to your identity to know details of your ancestral past. Both my grandmothers are of ScotsIrish origin - one a Grant and the other a Stewart, descended from Robert Stewart, Earl of Orkney and half-brother of Marie Stuart. Are Scots not taught Scots Gaelic either? I am so proud of the sacrifices the Irish people made for their freedom. The Republic of Ireland is not even part of the Commonwealth but proudly one of the original EU 12 since 1973. Go raibh maith agaibh!

But Ireland FOUGHT a cultural genocide by England for hundreds of years. It is only since the 20th century that peace brought the Republic the ability to invest heavily in bringing Irish Gaelic back into wide use. Irish culture has flourished in peaceful independence. In the US the old remanants of the Irish diaspora always desperately kept what they brought with them. Scotland has never had the separtion and independence from London tgat Ireland has had. They are still part of the United Kingdom under London's cultural control.

@@corinnem.239 It's a bit more complicated a situation in Scotland. Ireland essentially consisted of a Catholic Irish majority population that was for a long time captive to a Protestant Anglo Irish landlord class minority. Scotland initially was part of creating the UK/the Union. The first single King of the Union was Scottish. The Protestant Scots fought with England to end a mostly Catholic supported Jacobite uprising which ended with Culloden and the strengthening of the Union. With the throne and the seats of government being in England and England being the most powerful country in the UK the relationship between England and Scotland naturally could be seen to have become a bit lopsided. And that is one reason why many Scots today want to reassert their independence. Although had it not been for Brexit I think it's fair to say that a slight majority of people in Scotland would still vote to remain in the Union, just like they did in the first Independence referendum.

It's great that you are fluent in Irish/Gaelic Sive, but having had an interest in the language and travelled Ireland extensively I noticed that there is a huge divide between the phonetically anglicised language of the schools and Gaelscoils and the more natural sounding minority languages of the western seaboard. Why is it not a requirement for University graduates of Irish courses to show at least a basic proficiency in the languages phonetics? I was shocked to hear University graduates and teachers not following the basic rules of the languages phonetic system.

In the Lowlands, it's not common. We don't get taught our language, history, or even have signs in Gaelic next to the English for the places. Most of us were also taught that we "cannot speak right" and we had to change the way we talked to fit in with the English language. Further up north, to the Highlands, you would see signs in Gaelic next to the English like Oban ( An-t Oban ), but I don't know if they get taught their history or language, either. There's also a huge Protestant / Catholic divide in Scotland which probably contributes to the suppression of our history and language. More and more people are beginning to support independence after seeing what a shitshow the English government is, though, regardless of religion, so we might see an independent Scotland in our lifetime.

Being from the islands, my experience in school was very different. Alongside world history we studied the Scottish Wars of Independence, the Highland Clearances, the Jacobites, the clan systems… We also had Gaelic lessons. It is disheartening to hear that Scotland’s history is so sparse in schools on the mainland. Especially when historical context is important in a variety of other school subjects. I think Diana has opened up a very important conversation we should have in our classrooms. I wouldn’t be surprised if no one would recognise Sam if he were walking around! I remember seeing only one Outlander advertisement on Princes Street when I was living in Edinburgh - and I was living there from 2015 through to 2017! It deserves more exposure in Scotland. :( Great video, though!

+Becca Gray Education policy in Scotland, including the school curriculum, is the responsibility of the First Minister for Scotland and the Scottish Government at Holyrood. If you are not being taught Scottish history I suggest you ask your teachers to get in touch with the Scottish Government to ask why that is so. It is not, as so many on this site try to suggest, somehow the fault of the Westminster Government. Even before the Scottish Parliament was created in 1999, education policy and the schools' curriculum in Scotland were set by the Secretary of State for Scotland, under Scottish Education Acts, and not by his English colleague, the Secretary of State for Education, who was responsible for education policy in England and Wales only. The claim by some people on this page that they were never taught Scottish history because it was suppressed by England is utter nonsense and it makes me very angry to read such nonsense. I was taught all the Scottish history I could handle at school in Edinburgh 40 years ago (before joining the then Scottish Education Department of the Civil Service).

lord daver I'm not sure about the first part of your point so I can't really comment on it, I would have to look further into it. • @lorddaver1935

+Becca Gray My point is (and I appreciate that its not what YOU have claimed) is that many people are claiming that they were not taught Scottish history "because the English have suppressed it". This is, in fact "chip on the shoulder" nonsense. Scottish education policy, including what is, or is not, taught in schools in Scotland, is the responsibility of the Scottish Government, not Westminster. And before the Scottish Parliament was formed in 1999, it was the responsibility of the Secretary of State for Scotland under the Scottish Education Acts, not of his English colleague the Secretary of State for Education. What I am saying is that if you were not taught about Scottish history then it is the fault of the Scottish Government in Edinburgh. It has nothing to do with London, although plenty of ignorant people on this site are trying claim that is so...

@David Vazquez, yes; that episode was horrendous, but it ISN'T the whole series! Apparently, you didn't follow up and see the episodes following that episode. Life wasn't a bowl of cherries in the 18th Century either. But you apparently didn't see what Jamie and Claire would go to the ends of the earth to protect one another from.

A very interesting vlog Shaun! We've watched Outlander from the outset .. I've had Amazon Prime for a long time & my husband discovered the series. He's Scottish ( from Edinburgh) & I'm English ( born in London..so I'm now called Sassanach lol) He's very knowledgeable about Scottish history, and I have to say I wasn't very interested until he was watching episode 1, series 1 & I was hooked! We were surprised no one had heard of it when we were watching..and my husband, who was an electoral registration officer ( for Orkney & Shetland) at the time, said he thought they were deliberately not showing it here because of the referendum. I see from what you shared he was probably right! Took our families ages to start watching it ( only this year..so they had a lot of catching up to do) It now turns out Lallibroch is really close to where my daughter lives ( she sent a photo of herself on the steps the other day) and her husband stumbled across the Outlander cast filming season 4 in the woods right where he works recently! It's a shame Scots don't know/aren't taught their history. But to be honest , I wasn't really interested in English history growing up. It's often only as you get older you want to know more about your roots and ancestry etc. Anyway..loved watching and will join your forum. I have a daughter in Edinburgh and one in Bo'ness.

+Ruizu I'm sorry, but I can't let your comment go by without pointing out that you are being led up the garden path by some of my "chip on the shoulder" - "everything's the fault of those wicked English folk..." compatriots. There is one problem with this line. It isn't true! Instead of tapping out the comments I gave to one of your friends, I'll just cut and paste them below. I'm sorry that they are fairly lengthy but please read and digest what I say... " It is an out and out lie to say that the English have somehow suppressed the teaching of Scottish history. I worked for 40 years in the Civil Service in Scotland, initially in the Scottish Education Department. Education policy in Scotland was the responsibility of the Secretary of State for Scotland, as set out Scottish Education Acts. It was the Secretary of State for Scotland that set the school curriculum, which was put into practice by local education authorities in Scotland. In other words, what was taught in Scottish schools was determined by the Secretary of State for Scotland, and not by his English counterpart, who was responsible for education policy in England and Wales only. And yes, Scottish history WAS taught. In England and Wales, education was the responsibility of a separate, English, department - The Department of Education and Science. Those on this page who claim that those nasty wicked English people somehow "blocked" the teaching of Scottish history are telling out right lies. They are seeking sympathy, as always, hoping that others will believe that Scotland, to this day, still lives under the cruel tyranny of the English. It isn't true. Unfortunately, just as they hoped, people like you believe them! I remember being taught all the Scottish history I could handle at school in Edinburgh..." I had a conversation a few months ago on this very topic with another of these "I was never taught Scottish history at school" characters. I said to him "That's odd. I was certainly taught Scottish history at school. Are you sure you were taught nothing on the subject?" "Not a thing" he said. I persisted and said, "Well how come I and all my friends were taught Scottish history at my school, but you weren't taught it at YOUR school?" At this he got rather angry and said "all we were taught was how the English oppressed us for centuries." And when I asked what he meant he gave me a torrent of facts about all the clashes between the Scots and the English from the year 1200 onwards, naming Scottish monarchs through the ages and the battles and dates they fought against the English and all the politics that were involved, right up to the Jacobite Rebellion. I said "So you WERE taught Scottish history, then..." He didn't answer."

lord daver I wasn’t referring to the education system in Scotland. I know knothing about that area nor the politics behind it. But thanks for the lengthy comment. I learned something new. I can’t speak for the Scottish folks since I myself am not one. But as a student for almost my entire life, I’m certain there are things I can’t recall in my history lessons or have interpreted differently due to whatever propaganda my government is implementing. But again I will not delve on the subject. History is one of my favorite subjects and as much as possible I don’t take sides in it because it has already happened. We should learn from it. Never repeat the same mistakes. As for my comment, I was referring to the show that Shaun was talking about which is Outlander. It’s a really good period show. And it got me into reading about the history of Scotland. (And actually wanting to go there myself) It’s rare to see a show featuring this beautiful country. Majority of the shows that are available to watch are about American, UK or Asian. It’s refreshing to watch something different. And it’s SAD that the show hasn’t garnered much attention in Scotland when the show is actually about it.

Shaun, as someone whose GGGG Grandfather gave up his castle for Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite Rebellion, I was born in the USA but my immediate Grandfather was James Paterson from Edinburgh. Now I live in London, have done for over 30 years and I can tell you as a Scottish descent and a Yank and now a Londoner it is obvious the British eliminated these lessons on Scottish history because if they knew, they would rebel and want to leave the UK. It seems if they have no idea how hard they fought, how the British treated them...it is a shocking shame and all the Clans and their own history....people need to know their clans and their history and this should be taught in every school especially in Scotland! You are doing a heck of a great job and thank you for all your own efforts!

I told him I started watching Outlander and it really shines a light into the forgotten corners of Scottish history. Its upsetting to know that Scottish history has been pushed under the rug, we only know fragments of it. Maybe I can ask my boyfriend his knowledge of the jacobites and this time period, if not we can both look into it together and I can try and get him to watch it. I agree with Shaun, Scotland is truly a beautiful country.

I loved hearing about your experience in discovering Outlander, from the first scene I fell head over heels in love with the Country, I think Scotland itself is the Star, I really couldn't believe a place looks like that with all those brilliant colors and then when I went in September it really is that color. Beautiful Beautiful place I will be back to explore more. I was filled with American sass when I went and wanted no guides and that was a mistake because I concentrated on staying alive while driving instead of seeing more castles, although we covered 700+ miles from Edinburgh, up to the highlands and back to Edinburgh. 7 days and I could have stayed for longer. I loved the no advertising and no TV's everywhere and the people were fantastic no matter where we went and the food was delish I never had a bad meal. Anyhoo thanks for vlog and I can be patient but this will make the wait more bearable.

I used to work in the Heritage Sector (in Stirling) and we had school visitors from all over the country. Post Braveheart the Wars of Independence became very popular in schools. II know that the Culloden Visitor Centre had a very popular education programme too. Personally , I went to school in the eighties in Clackmannanshire and we barely got any Scottish history but my impression is that it's quite popular in the curriculum these days - certainly the sites I worked in were very popular with schools from all over Scotland, so things have changed for the better. These shows and films are very good for piquing interest in history though. I haven't watched Outlander but I do love history and would recommend that you visit the Culloden Centre. Come to Stirling too, we have plenty of history here!

I went to school in Linlithgow during the 1960's and 1970's. Scottish History was well covered from around Year 3 onwards with trips to Dunfermline Abbey, Banockburn, Stirling castle and the lake of Menteith in Primary School. I read Diana's books some time ago and love her vision of Scotland during the Jacobite rebellion, it brings to life what I learned all these years ago.

Hey Shaun...I need to reinforce the fact that Diana Gabaldon did very detailed research while writing Outlander. I knew she did a lot of research, but the other day while going through a bunch of old papers of my mother's McNabb family, I found a paper (not sure where it came from), but it had a Lyon emblem within a diamond shape in the top corners and was entitled "The Ancient History of the the Distinguished Surname McNabb". It was very small print, but it talked about the the fact that their estate was in Perthshire, touched on the battle of Culloden, then later it talks about how they joined the MacDougals in fighting against Robert the Bruce (maybe not very popular these days), something about a Whiskey feud with the MacNeishes. Some migrated to Canada and some to Ireland, but it also says some clansmen took the "White Sails" which plied the stormy Atlantic. Lists some ship names has the Hector, Rambler and Dove. A few settled in Jamaica, but the more adventurous settled in Virginia, the Carolinas, Pictou (wherever that is), some in Nova Scotia and the Ottowa Valley. Sometimes 400-500 people piled onto the ships when they were only meant to carry around 100 passengers. Many times only arriving with 60-70% of their passengers, the rest dying at sea. So...Diana has done her job well! I was very excited to find this information and I'm sorry this is so long. I would have sent it privately, but I didn't have an email address. Delete this if you don't want it on here and I will understand. Thank you. Oh and I should let you know. I am an American living in Texas, since you are talking here about Scottish people not knowing about the history there. One last thing, I have signed up for your facebook group, but it is pending, so waiting for your approval.

My ancestry is clan McClellan and several others. In actively researching it, l have fallen in love with Scotland. Outlander has made Scotlands history real to me. Scotlands repression that began when pipes and tartans were outlawed, seems to have its shadow over Scottish people today. How sad that such a valiant history is not taught to everyone there in school. I hope the movement of 'Outlander' takes off there and shows them their true, incredible ancestry. There is SO MUCH to be proud of- yet its still kept hidden in darkness from the very people who own it. Outlander beautifully illustrates Scotlands brave heritage.

Can I just say (in my opinion) we were, have been and still are under English rule. No matter how you look at it. Yes we have our own parliament and “make our own decisions “ but that is only for minor issues. Anything important or relevant STILL has to go through the ENGLISH parliament for approval. We are only taught about maybe William Wallace and Robert the Bruce apart from that nothing. We are not really taught about the history of the jacobites or the battle of Culloden (near Inverness). There is animosity to this day between the Scottish and English and probably always will be, the problem is (as you basically said) people these days don’t really know why. Great video Shaun and sorry still not watched any outlander videos but anything that gets the history of Scotland out there has to be a good thing. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I think the English/Scottish animosity is much overplayed, although I have to admit that my first years after having moved down to England were not happy ones as a wee Scots lad wi' a funny accent. However, a simple internet search will reveal that the Union with England was nothing but a hostile take-over and Britain run as England-plus ever since. Brexit, the Poll Tax, name your own example! The combined Westminster seats allotted to Scots, Welsh and Northern Irish do not make the slightest impression against the huge numbers of English MPs, which can only suggest that Scotland remains under English rule. However, I DO recommend reading the books and/or watching the show!

That was the major mistake in IndyRef tbh - should have given English people the vote and Scotland would have been out sailing into the tender embrace of Merkel and Schauble.

Now I love it as well, so thank you for the recommendation! I'm all caught up on it, so it's nice to be able to watch all of your Outlander themed videos while I wait for the next season!

Important question for you: Have you attempted to contact the writer of Outlander directly, yet? If not, you should. If only to bring this video to her attention. She should see it!! I live just outside Birmingham in the UK and have always wanted to visit Scotland. Long before I knew about Outlander it was because I'm into animals and the environment and I wanted to visit to see some of the beautiful countryside. Now with the advent of Outlander I want to visit the country even more because I have become such a fan of the show and the books and though that I have become interested in history as a whole, not just Scottish history. Hopefully I'll be able to fulfill a long held dream and visit Scotland next year. Also, I look forward to watching more of your Droughtlander vlogs :D

Shaun, a few comments: 1) I left school in 1993 - so I am a little bit older than you (OK - 12 years or so) - I remember covering the whole period of the Stuart’s/Stewart’s in Primary school, with trips to Linlithgow Palace, Holyrood Palace, Edinburgh Castle - continuing right through to Massacre of Glencoe, the various risings (including the lesser known risings) and culminating in Culloden and the transportation of prisoners to the colonies as indentured servants. Now granted I went to an independent school, but remember discussing everything with friends in my street who were studying it at their schools at the same time... school curriculum’s tend to change every 10 years or so, so perhaps that was one of the things “lost” between changes. Indeed it was interesting walking through the recent Jacobite exhibition at Chambers Street and remembering all the things that came flooding back. 2) Outlander series 1 in the US was split into two parts, first eight episodes airing in the late summer - fall of 2014 then the 2nd eight in early 2015 ending May 2015. In the UK Amazon released the first series on 9th February 2015 - and caught up with the US airings (I remember the 2 week wait between the last two episodes coinciding with the US). I have been watching Amazon Video since “Vikings” aired in 2013 and I remember seeing numerous Amazon adverts across all non-BBC channels around that time, remember seeing ads in newspapers like the Metro, Sun, Scotsman - even remember some bus ads. 3) I think the reason Outlander is not mainstream here is threefold: a): Netflix was and perhaps still is more popular with subscribers than Amazon Prime Video, due to the numerous Big shows that they carry in comparison (Big Bang Theory / How I Met Your Mother [which flopped on BBC TV, but hit UK mainstream when Channel 4 eventually bought it later], etc.); b) Adverts were perhaps more female focused - romance 70%, action 30% [primary target audience is female] and; c) even now the first series is on UK TV, it is tucked away on a niche channel - can’t say I regularly watch More4 (when I can wrestle the remote from my wife/kids).

I have to agree with some of the other posters: I think the lack of your own history in schools is a holdover/continuation of the English keeping you down. It's the same in kind to the suppression of Gaelic & the wearing of the tartan in the past. One thing after another until even Scots look down on some of it or just don't think it's important. Fight the power my friend!

T Chase. Please ignore the aggressive idiot who is clearly an example of the odd occasion that Scottish education fails. As to the main point of your own post; you should bear in mind that the Scottish education system has always been completely separate from the English system. What was taught in Scottish schools was under the control of Scots, not of the English. As it happens I was taught about this period in school, but that was in the 1950s when the curriculum was not as prescriptive as it is today. I suspect that what any particular child learned of Scottish history varied greatly depending on when and whereabouts in Scotland they attended school, also on the particular school the attended and even on the individual teacher.

sirderam1 I appreciate your point as well as your courtesy. And I agree entirely that in modern times, Scots control their own educational system. The English interference I was thinking of was a good century or two ago. :-) I'm sure you're right about the quality & nature of the education varying as per the factors you noted. That happens here too. I was amazed to see Shaun's informal poll & realize that many Americans of proud Scottish descent, like myself, may be more aware of some Scottish events that random Scots on the street are. I certainly hope, as Shaun does, that "Outlander" serves as an inspiration for at least some folks to learn more about Scottish history.

I think it should be pointed out that many Scots are aware of earlier Scottish History when it was a case of Scotland v England (William Wallace / Robert The Bruce etc.) The Jacobite Risings were fought by people for a number of different reasons (religion, namely Catholicism & Episcopalian vs. Protestants / anger at Act Of Union being forced through as a consequence of bailing out the Scottish Landlords and therefore the economy after the failure of the Darien Scheme and even UK political factions - the Jacobite supporting "Tory" vs the Georgian supporting "Whigs") and as such not all the Scottish population supported the Jacobite cause - Cumberland's army consisted of a number of "Scottish Battalions" made up of Highland Clans and Lowlanders. Somewhat surprisingly on the march south from the Highlands the Jacobites headed for Edinburgh because it was more "sympathetic" to the cause than Glasgow was (obviously contrary to the 2014 Referendum result) - after Prestonpans, they moved down through Hawick and west through Langholm to cross the border and take Carlisle and march on down to Derby before retreating for the winter, when the English Jacobites failed to deliver on their support. Perhaps teaching of this in schools is difficult because of the mixed motives involved, particularly when planning the national curriculum for a country that has areas very much divided e.g. teaching it from the "Religion" aspect could be seen as further exacerbating the sectarianism that still exists in Scotland today. If you want to discuss all the motives, then you would find that the subject would carry on longer than one school term (to do each justice) and would also deter pupils who have no interest in history at the time.

Only now I have I been reading up on the history and plus I just got into Outlander. Recently I have read that there will be a movie filmed in Scotland , do you know what movie that is? It's a historical or period drama film. I believe Chris Pine is in it. I think that's also exciting to hear that Scotland is also being used for film locations.

First, I am pro-Independence and always will be... I am going to be a little controversial here. I think that what David Cameron did was the right thing to do because of what your video points out. I want the people of Scotland to vote for Independence both equally on what is going on in Scotland now and our history. Outlander shows only one side of the history between Scotland and England. I am so glad that we are all learning more about our history from Outlander, but that is a very small part of our history. I hope that when Scotland goes to vote next time, that we will be voting on not just the present, but also our past. And I obviously hope that when we win Independence, we will be a stronger country because of Outlander, so go Outlander!!!

Guys, Outlander is not historically accurate 😆 anyone could do it simply reading Wikipedia and missing all the relevant historical facts and points, without any serious understanding of the events touched in the show. If I were scottish I would be greatly embarrassed that my country is very famous again these days because of... Outlander. I would think my country deserves better. Until Scotland will keep drinking the lies that are told to them (for centuries... ) it will never obtain anything. Until Scotland will keep accepting very low grade historical stuff like Outlander it will always be a country tricked by Westminster. In all of this Scottish people have their responsibility too. Wake up. (Guys, why are we even talking about this? 😂 Outlander is not even meant to be historically accurate, it’s fiction, and some scenes present a BLATANT manipulation of real historical facts, that serious historians know, that show that the people who produced this stuff are not interested in telling the historical truth)

  • @lacypettit7386

I have to defend Diana here. "Outlander" is historical fiction and she's never claimed it to be otherwise. As far as the comment Scotland should be embarrassed I don't agree. What the novels and the show does is make people curious, question, and start researching. That can be something that those in control would not want because a complacent and ignorant society is much easier to control, hence why Shaun's video is relevant. You should want to know more, the good, the bad, and the ugly of it all so you can make more informed choices and understand the world around you a little better. If a book fiction or nonfiction stirs the curiosity to learn then all the better.

@@lacypettit7386 I agree. Also, when I watch the program (and other similar historical or even semi-historical dramas, such as Versailles, Vikings, The Last Kingdom, etc., etc.), I always will stop the program throughout the viewing to research the actual historical fact(s) on my smartphone. Essentially as a cross-check/reference. Some of the story-lines are spot on, others, poetic license is taken. In either event, enlightens me to what is/was historical or just fiction.

l was born in Edinburgh...but brought up in Northern England... therefore educated in England...whenever my homeland was briefly mentioned it was in a negative context....always arousing my patriotic feelings. However l am aware and proud of my heritage and history of my true country. As a child my parents took us all over Scotland...back in the 1950s there weren't tourists everywhere...We travelled by car and were able to stop wherever we liked to trudge across a field to investigate ruined castles and burrows.Of course we visited Culloden field ....before the tourist centre existed...and dad explained the Jacobite rebellion and the genocide which was the aftermath of it, to us. We proudly wore our kilts...performed the fling and sword dance dancing to dad's amazing pipe music.. he even played them in Santorini in 1970 at my wedding here in Athens in 1983 and on the seashore of Crete....the Skye Boatsong in 1987 as a tribute to my mum who had passed away that year. Maybe we Scots who were brought up in 'exile' have more of a nostalgia for our roots? I've seen only one complete season of Outlander so far..can't say that l like the time travel element of the story...just not my style....doubt very much that I'd read the books..though l am a prolific reader ...particularly biographies and social history...However my daughter and l watched together and it was a great opportunity for me to share my knowledge of the period and consequences of the defeat for our Natoon. Fortunately l didn't have to change my surname on marriage...one of my sons is called Pharlan... My eldest son and Shaun look so much alike they could be twins!! Enjoy the vlog....it's a wee link with home.......😊
