🎗The camera strap I use is the Caruba Climbing Rope (if you search climbing rope camera strap on amazon you will find similar ones: amzn.to/3BMtr1t ) Please note that the camera strap cannot be attached directly to the GRIII because the holes to attach straps are very very small. So for now I use a narrow 2.5mm black zip tie to connect the strap to the camera - works well!

If you are talking about the Ricoh Gr you must imo mention the Fuji Xf10. Pls have a look at it, its way more inexpensive and besides the autofocus probably even superior to the gr. Top Features: 24mp apsc bayer sensor 18,5mm f2.8 lens (extremly sharp, even wide open) almost as compact as the ricoh inbuilt flash film simulations

I would also add 2 more things that are very useful: 1) one is the 2gb internal storage. It is not much (around 40 raw files) but it has saved me at least 5 times, when I left the house with my SD card still plugged into my PC. 2) The iso behaviour. You can set it to auto then press left (iso button) to change it quickly to a specific value e.g. 800 then if you want to change quickly to auto iso again, you hit the left button and then Fn button. Basically it remembers your previous iso setting. Amazing user experience. The only thing I do not like is the AF in dim conditions - but the snap focus makes up for this shortcoming. I firmly believe that the GRIII/IIIx is the best camera you can buy for under 1000$ right now.

I have always been tempted by that camera, but in the end I never have gone for it. Personally my pocket option at the moment is the Sony RX100 VI - Which is great for flexibility. I do have a Sony A5100 and a Sony A6500 which when paired with my 20mm F2.8 lens is pocketable (A5100 in jeans, A6500 in a jacket pocket). I also have a 28mm F2, 35mm F2.8 and a 35mm F1.8 that can be quite light... but honestly... the size of those lenses often mean I just take my A7R III. What I will say is that I really do wish Sony would release an update to the 5100... and 24mm pancake would be perfect...

I wholeheartedly agree. I have both the GRiii and the X100v. Took a trip to NY a couple weeks ago and it was a no-brainer to take the GR. First, it's wider (28 vs 35 fov), so better for a city IMO. But like you say, it fits in your pocket. And it's way more inconspicuous, AND it's much easier to use one-handed. I prefer to shoot raw most of the time but I do love the b/w jpgs that come out of this camera. I did have a battery issue though. I found the batteries to die extremely fast. I needed 3 to get through the day and I didn't even take that many pics. The constant on-off, or leaving it on between shots just drains the battery whether actually taking shots or not. Next time I would want to take 5-6 batteries with me if I really wanted to do a lot of shooting.

Edit: (Loved that outro and the music!) Looks like a fun and great little camera, reminds me of my Sony Cybershot DSC-T900. I'd never owned a camera before that even though I really wanted one because I was a kid and the thing was like $800 at the time. My mind was blown when I got home and saw the pictures on the family computer room (I had found it lying on the floor in some rally/protest that I'd gone to with my dad. I grabbed it, asked like 15 people around if they'd dropped it and nobody said it was theirs so I was like ok I think I've done enough to keep it. Everyone was marching on so the owner was likely like 30 minutes ahead on foot anyway and somebody else would've likely grabbed it soon as they saw it and asked NOBODY.) I still have the shell even though it doesn't work. That thing was so amazing. Incredibly thin, easily pocketed and taken out with one hand and operated quickly to take your shot, and the images were incredible for both its size and time. It actually took some really good macros.

Great little camera but it isn't weather sealed. Screw a UV filter on the X100V and it's fine in the rain which was the main reason I didn't go for the Ricoh. I also like the articulated screen on the Fujifilm for the occasional times I need a ground level or over the head photo. The X100V fits in a jacket pocket fine. The rare days it's T-shirt weather here in NW UK is when I fit the strap. Can't go wrong with either camera but in my opinion the Fujifilm just pips it to the post....plus it looks oh so good.

I owned the GRIIIX for a few months. It is a very good camera and so easy to carry, but if you already own MFT gear (as I do) you might like a LUMIX GX850 better. It has a tilting screen, interchangeable lenses and better autofocus. The IQ overall can be just as good as the Ricoh. You can have a 20m f1.7 AND a 14mm f2.5 with you at all times, they are so small. And the LUMIX has better battery life. Not saying the Ricoh is a bad camera, it’s great, but the GX850 is even better in my opinion.

I have had two GR cameras: an original 2008 GR Digital and a GR II (2015?). The GRD rear wheel failed after a few years. I used whiskey on a cotton bud, which helped. However the lens gets stuck 50% of the time when I open it or close it. The GR has a hair or dust on the sensor at the moment. So yes, these problems happen in real life! I also prefer the colours from the original GRD. There’s not much in it. But having said all that, it fits easily in a shirt pocket. That is worth a lot.

The GRiiix is a great little camera. It shoots great photos and the size factor is a big plus. However, the user experience isn’t all that great. I went for my manual camera more. It may be a matter of getting used to things but the tactile feel of the dedicated buttons and dials on the manual were intuitive, gave me full control of the shot through the VF. Shooting using a rear monitor just didn’t get me ‘into’ the shot.

My friend, that watch tip is genius. It's so obvious and so simple, but so smart. I think that is the biggest point of friction for pocket cameras: People don't want to carry a phone and a camera. This removes the necessity for a phone at all. I just leave my phone at home and don't care. It's basically a small WiFi machine for me when I don't want to sit at my laptop, but this watch workaround could answer the call. 🤙 How far can you be away from your phone and the watch still does the primary functions like call and message?

@@-grey good for you. But its disingenuous to say that one should put a large lcd eye cup on a camera designed to go in your pocket. Also, many people-myself included- shoot better with our eyes to a viewfinder. I use a leica ovf on my ricoh grii but for portraits and other close up work, my composition or focus are often sub-par without a proper finder, as I limit my movements to work within the limitations of not having a wysiwyg finder. Moreover if theres the option, subjects tend to look at the photographer rather than the lens, which means poor portraits generally imo when the subject it looking directly at my face, but my camera is somewhere else. For everyone who doesn't need a viewfinder, almost all of the current small point and shoots qualify, including the gr ii, gr iii and gr iiix. Also, most people will just use a phone, because the results will be similar except in qualities most people don't care about. For anyone who wants a viewfinder with an apsc-c pocket prime and decent controls, there is nothing. The closest fit is the sony rx100 but that means a slow zoom lens and fighting the controls, not to mention a comparatively tiny sensor with poor dof control, and the necessity to manually pop up the evf. Edit. The fuji x100 series and Canon g1x3 are also contenders but are not alternatives to a smart phone in the way a Ricoh gr can be.

I am thinking about buying one for years, but I figured I would be afraid to carry it in a jacket or especially a jeans pocket without any protection because of the small dirt, lint and dust in there. Is the retractable lens safe from that? I believe I would also be concerned about breaking the lens cover when it's in a tight pocket. The colors out of camera jpgs on the GR is not great either, but it seems both the II and III fixed that somewhat. Here’s to hoping the GRIV will come with a flash and viewfinder. That might get me back to buying another digital camera. As for the size thing, yes this is why I take so many more pictures with my mju or XA than with my Hexar AF or even the Contax T2. The XA and Mju are so much easier to just carry put in my pocket before leaving the house.

There is no alternative. X100v comes in a large size and you need to remove the lens cap every time yourself, with no stabilizer. There are some 1” cameras, though.
