So much quality from such a small camera I really like it. Great captures by the way. I agree with that this camera makes you Disappear Because of how compact it is. My only gripe is the dust and weathered sealing😅. I would love a more rebuts version that can handle an aggressive treatment. Other than that cheers mate I really didn’t want to see your review on it because it is in my basket 😅lol. Great job as always

Great review over all. I would have added a section about the GR's killer feature - Snap Focus. It doesn't matter whether it's good in low light situations regarding AF, when you are using snap focus. Also for those nervous about street photography, snap focus means that you can be very discreet in taking picture. not having the camera up to your eye definitely helps too.

More pocketable than most tall smartphones. Have you tried “snap focus” feature? Worth coverage, IMO, in follow-up reviews. One of the few cams that makes RAW in DNG format. Cheers!

I have the GR3 and GR3x plus a Leica M11 with Summicron 50mm and Voigtlander Ultron II 28mm. My wife usually shoots the Ricoh cameras and after a holiday or whatever I get all the files in Lightroom and in good to normal light the Ricoh cameras are close enough to the Leica that I frequently don't know which camera has taken which photo (I have to check the info). As the light fades the Leica does pull away a bit but they're just so good. The Ricoh cameras easily fit in a jean pocket comfortably, people don't notice them and they're fast to use and have IBIS. If I had to sell all my Leica gear I'd be totally fine with just shooting the GR cameras and actually relieved that I don't have to lug a camera bag around or worry it's going to get nicked or damaged etc. I'm really looking forward to the GR4 and GR4x.

The fact it has recipes - it’s small - image quality is good is a winner. It probably won’t be my purchase but it definitely fills a void. The sensor getting dusty is definitely an issue hmmm 🤔 but it’s not going to be your landscape camera …it’s a a better alternative than phones because phones don’t allow us to disconnect from the world. Great review! I agree sometimes we need to push ourselves outside of their own comfort zone, the cameras and take photos that are different to what we do without you mate the better photographers and sometimes even using gear that’s not perfect. Also it’s good for our photography as it forces the brain to do something different…. Learning

I have the Fuji XT 30 a great, and relatively small camera body, but there are days i just can't be faffed carrying a bag with me when i got out. and there are days like you say when you feel a bit paranoid and just don't want the attention. The Ricoh is the solution, genuinely pocketable, fantastic crisp images. 27mm- 40mm equivalent focal length is not that much of a hurdle , there's always the 28 for those that like getting up close

No, not too late!!! I also have the GR III (not X) and the X100V and love having both in my (small) bag as they do fulfill quite different functions for me. Had mine for 18 months and so far no dust issues. Your lens cap reminds me that I should do the same. Yeah, battery life is not excellent but usually 2 are enough to satisfy a days shooting and certainly enough if I have a power bank and/or the other camera in the bag. Love some of the colours in your photos but do not recognize them as the stock film sims and I see you have used your excellent stacked presets.

I just got a grIII recently. I really wanted a fuji x100v but you still cant buy them really anywhere. Plus I am more of a 28mm shooter anyway. I still think I will pick a x100v up when they become available again because I really like having a viewfinder. But these ricoh cameras are really underrated right now. Litterally a poor mans leica q in my opinion. The 28mm equiv lens is amazingly sharp and has some nice character. you can fix it in camera with a setting but I love the vingetting the lens creates! I think this lens is as sharp to my eye as my 28mm summicron v1 i use on my m10p. somthing this powerful you can put in your pocket is amazing! one of two downsides I have is my wife calls it my dad cam, the other is It could really use a viewfinder even if it was a crappy one.

I bought one to replace my old X70. The image quality is insane. Better than my X-T even. I have been enjoying the colours and texture of the files more than my Fujifilm too. The output reminds me more of shooting film on my old Nikon F3 than my Fujifilm ever does. I don't use recipes because the basic colours are just that nice and natural. The usability functions are probably better than any camera in the market too, you can be one tap away from snap distance priority mode, infinity focus, snap focus. Highlight weighted metering is amazing, the auto white balance modes are way more intelligent than Fujifilm. It just works and works quickly. Genuine kudos to the product design team. Cons: No flip screen for low angle/selfies The battery indicator is only 3 bars, so you don't know if you're at 65% or 34%. 5 bars would be ideal. The new models have fixed the back wheel issue, you don't need weather sealing because it's one hand operational so you can protect it with the other or use an umbrella, and I put a filter on mine to cure the dust issue entirely. I recommend a grip though. I bought a wood hand grip for mine, it doesn't add much to the profile, but it just let's me get my fingers around it better rather than the pinch grip. With the X70 I actual fired the shutter with my thumb and held it low all the time, no flip screen makes this not an option on the GR. The black one is the same metal premium feel as the urban.

Congrats- you discovered the secret- the image quality this camera produces is far better than anything this small should produce. I think its big advantage is getting the decisive moment when you’re not expecting it. Just reach into your pocket, grab the camera, push the power button, it powers up almost instantly, point and shoot. You get the shot before you could get your big mirrorless out of its bag.

This camera is incredible but has so many problems. Dust sensor, stuck lens, jumpy dials, etc. Someone said it is the disposable digital camera lol. But honestly i much prefer ricoh gr image quality than fujifilm, is it so sharp and has that leica 3d pop image dimension.

Amazing little cameras. I had the GRiii, and while it was incredible, with a feature set that outweighs its diminutive size, I just didn’t get along with it as I thought I might. Ended up selling mine on. I then started to miss camera and the form factor, so opted instead for the older CCD sensor version of the GRD3. They’re very cheap to get by comparison. The simpler feature set suits my shooting style better too. I love using it in gig settings with the pop up flash and get right in amongst the mosh pit action. I’m surprised you didn’t touch upon the one feature that makes the GR cameras so popular, and that is snap focus.

I have the non-X version and it really is amazing how good the images from it can be. And more importantly to me, it is genuinely pocketable in a way the Fuji X100 cameras just aren’t. It’s so small and lightweight, it’s basically never a burden to carry anywhere, so I’m much more likely to carry it. That was the deciding factor for me when I was deciding whether to get the Ricoh or an X100F/V. I have looked at these cameras several times and like them (Fuji shooter here), but the same issue each time is the deal breaker. I live in the US southwest Sonoran Desert where the sun is ALWAYS BRIGHT. The rear screen is almost totally useless. A big part of the shooting experience for me is finding a composition and developing it and the setting to get the best in-camera shot. Hoping the GR IV will have a viewfinder. I enjoy your videos. It's a fair question. My own experience was that I bought the GR IIIx before moving to Japan as my only camera (I was new to photography) and have used that camera for almost 2 years. I recently "upgraded" to a Fuji X-T5 but unless I'm going out specifically to take photos with the Fuji, the Ricoh is always attached to my backpack and ready to take photos. The price is really for the form factor, I think. It's a super compact camera that is quick to shoot, easily pocketable/attachable somewhere you don't really notice but can be easily accessed. It takes stunning photos and, as a foreigner in another country, nobody really notices that I'm taking photos because it looks like a touristy point-and-shoot. The feeling of taking photos in public is very different with a larger camera.

I trashed an X-T2 in 3 years with just general use and travel. My Ricoh is my everyday camera with no issues. I got a filter right as mine arrived from Ricoh, put it on the second it left the box and no dust problem anymore. So far my GR has held up longer than my weather sealed X-T. So it's a lot better than it seems at a glance is the point here.

@@-grey I know what he means but for as many people who are saying it's durable I've heard almost just as many with issues where dust got in the lens and dials stoped working. I treat my cameras like tools and I'm not afraid to beat them up. A camera I have to baby isn't a camera I want. I've had other pro level point and shoots in the past and dust has always been an issues with similar style lenses and it's not a risk I'm willing to take

  • @-grey

@@selishots The dial issue was in the first year batches, they did some recalls and free fixes and then have since put out a new dial design. So if you buy new, it's not a problem. Same. I actually sheared off the back bottom corners on my X-T, and because I handhold all day everyday, I'm very good at melting off paint and finish with my skin oils. I really use my stuff. The build is good on the GR, it's actually better engineered material than it looks in pictures. The lens dust is still an issue if you don't use a filter. I learned my lesson with the X70 and G7XII. No dust gets around the filter I have. Zero. So both those concerns are non-issues as of 2023. Just a heads up to people who are looking for up-to-date information and find this thread. ✨

The buttons on my Fuji X-E4 definitely feel cheap, fragile too small to be pleasant to use. I do worry about longevity. The image quality is great however. On the other hand,my 10yr old X-E1 feels as though the buttons are better. They are certainly much bigger which makes easier to use. What I miss with my Fujis is that there’s no in body image stabilisation. I’ve had it on all my Pentax DSLRs for almost 15 yrs so why has it not yet reached the small Fujis? If Ricoh can do it with the tiny GRIII why not Fuji? Reason is money. They were charging so so much for the X100V it’s abysmal it’s not included. And the other thing is send raw to my phone. Great that Ricoh does this. Again been doing it wirelessly with my Pentax K-1 since 2016 so when I got my Fuji X-E4 I was expecting it would have an even better app and do more. Sadly even the new Fuji XApp is a bit ordinary. When I’m travelling I’d like to send raw to phone or iPad too

@@Goughie yes when you pixel peep or use it for prints. An iPhone sensor is much smaller than apsc so the image quality wont be as good at pixel level and in dynamic range. But for Facebook and Instagram people won't notice the difference especially with that f2.8 aperture lens on ricoh gr. A 56mm 1.4 apsc lens would make a difference but it defeats the purpose of that compact camera.

With all the buzz around this camera i decided to rent this camera for a week. If we can just ‘cut to the chase’, the lack of the evf is a major issue, as the lcd is hard to see in daylight. The buttons are tiny and finicky, and the focus is slow in low light and a bit tricky to place. So, for an thousand dollars, how can i justify a point and shoot with such issues? Enough of the KZread sales promotion hype.

Because for many the value is having something with great image quality that fits in their pocket. EVF the camera would be bigger! The RX100 series have the little pop up ones but the sensor in this is 3x bigger I guess Ricoh don’t really have any competition so can charge what they want with a niche product For some people this camera is worth it! Others it won’t be! This isn’t promotional, I bought the camera, and all views are my own

Hi Goughie. As always your review was balanced and being a Ricoh and Fuji user exclusively, I've discovered over time that they all have their good and bad points. What camera doesn't? However, you were unhappy about a couple of points that need addressing, namely the autofocus and screen brightness. Firstly, yes, the Ricoh autofocus has never been great, but it is much better in my GR3 and GR3X than in my original GR. However in low light and street/impromptu situations the Ricoh possesses the brilliant snap focus. just set your aperture at around f5.6 or f8 and your snap focus distsnce to 2.5 metres and you just lift the camera and shoot and eveything is spot on. It even gives you a scale to show what will be in focus. Secondly, the screen brightness can be adjusted and I normally run it at +2 and it works fine for me in sunny conditions. Finally there are some lovely recipes out there away from Ritchie's site. LukeTaylor has a very good range that you can find on his KZread channel kzread.info/dash/bejne/c6WbxM2QqtDIdco.html or website www.lukeptaylor.com/ricoh-film-recipes . Also a very nice guy that goes on KZread as Photo Stuff has a great "Leica Look" recipe that I use as my go to on the GR3X. kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZIeuwdqAhr29k5M.html Looking forward to an update on the Ricoh soon and some more of your excellent photographs. oh and by the way, your two Fuji Goughie recipes hold the top spot on my custom menus😊
