Ricoh GRIIIx | A dream come true?
Welcome back guys! It`s been a while.
My camera trio is complete - I`ve decided to buy the GRIIIx, a pocket sized APS-C with a 40mm equivalent lens. Was it worth it? Hear my thoughts about this little dope piece of gear.

    @@syadiqazman i cant remember the time when i used a zoom lens. It just feels natural for me to just move and change the pov - it gives you more creativity when you have to change your perspective. But its just an individual feel - many people prefer zooms as well and thats fine. I just love the overall feel of primes and fixed focal lenght. Not no mention that primes give you better low light performance📷

    Great video and gorgeous photos! You are inspiring me about photography and buying Ricoh GR IIIx (or maybe it will be better to wait for the new version, GR IV, did you hear maybe about it?). And I would like to have a camera with a very good video, too. I know Ricoh is not for this but could you please recommend something from Fujifilm or Sony system to have as a second camera or just a video camera? I am still working on Canon 60 d (Tamron lens, eq. 28-80mm, f: 2.8), and after years I have realized I really love street photography. I would like to have something lighter but - I have mentioned - also with good video. I will be happy to hear back from you. All the best, take care and powodzenia! ;) PS And I have a question: do you have some filter for your Ricoh? Or it is some kind of protection of lens? It looks pretty cool I must say :)

    Lens focal length is not about framing. It’s about perspective. 38 - 42 mm (35 mm equivalent) are going to give you your most natural perspective. The perspective you experience walking around looking at the world in real life. If you had to settle for just one lens 40 mm would be the one for me. I found out about this when I took a road trip years ago using my stepmothers Rollei travel camera, 1950’s vintage. It was a jewel, a joy to use. And so many photos I took with it were keepers, not always the case with me. When I tried to figure out what I liked so much about it, I realized it was mostly to do with the focal length. Ideal format. Just saying.

  • @DigitalRetro

    @DigitalRetro

    Жыл бұрын

    Well I didn`t say anything that it is. You are right about perspective and the "look" that each focal lenght gives you, but I would argue about framing in terms of enviroment conditions. The longer focal lenght won`t let you frame your shots in tight spaces, while the wider lens on the other hand will. Secondly the longer the focal lengh, the more compressed the pespective is - thus the framing will not be the same on tele vs. wide lens. The objects will appear differently - on wider focal lenghts you can basically "see" more of the side of objects and on tele it becomes more "flat". Personally I too like to describe photography as a way of perspective, as all the fun is to find the right perspective, the right point of view to make the picture interesting. Cheers! 🙃

    40 mm is the closest thing to our natural point of view. It's actually easier to make a nice composition with 40mm. I use that focal length on my Fuji, Sony and Nikon cameras. I love that Ricoh added that focal length. Smart decision. Now I always have my Ricoh GRIIIx on my. I take it everywhere I go.

    Would you agree that 28mm is better for "context, not portraits" like when you want to put people in the context of the place and time? A complete opposite - a 135mm F/2 creates stunning portraits, but if you take 100 of portraits of your family members on different occasions and then 30 years later look at the pictures... I'm pretty sure you'll recognize the portraits as beautiful, but for 90% of them you'll have no idea where they were taken, what the occasion was, looking at the photo would not evoke the feeling of that time, you'll just see a pretty photo. I'm a little torn between 28mm and 40mm, I have a 24-105 zoom and a fixed 35mm. Regretfully, I haven't methodically spent a lot of time on any particular focal length, but I think I prefer the perspective that the 40mm gives, but maybe I just suck at composing at wide angle. But does 40mm give enough context? Like, a photo of a kid in the playground, or playing on the floor with toys, or jumping around in the rain - do you see enough surroundings? Do you have to take a lot of steps back? I guess I'm trying to think in terms if I only had one focal length, would I be happiest with 40mm, that leans into portrait territory, or 28mm that leans into landscape territory...? I know, I know, depends on your style and preferences... still, if you prefer more context than portraits, BUT like the perspective that the 40mm the most? I find a 35, though not a portrait lens per se, wide open, can create killer portraits and you have context! So, I don't know. 40 isn't that much narrower, but 28 might be more universal, though more difficult to compose....

  • @DigitalRetro

    @DigitalRetro

    11 ай бұрын

    Hi there! For me it`s 35mm all the way. I shoot most of my shots on 35mm(you can see my 35 1.8 video on the channel as well as a video about GRIIIx portrait photography), so I always go for the 35mm equivalents when not shooting FF. This focal lenght let`s you shoot closer portraits with great bokeh and environmental ports as well. The 40mm fov of GRIIIx is very close to 35, but you can definitely feel the tighter frame when shooting and composing. It`s not a huge difference, but it`s there. I did have the GRII before with it`s 28mm lens and I think it was more versatile in terms of street photography and environmental shots. 40mm can be too tight in closed spaces, where the 28 did the job done. For me as a portrait photographer I really enjoy the 40mm, but I guess if you want that "close action", the 28mm could be better and I`d consider the GRIII instead of GRIIIx.

    This camera is so over hyped it's unbelievable. I finally bought one to see what all the fuss was about and really hate it. And the main reason is that the screen is one of the absolute worst I've ever come across. It's truly terrible and in anything like daylight you can't see a bloody thing. And it doesn't tilt. Jesus, you would have thought by now Ricoh would have updated this thing. But I suppose with so much hype being spread they just couldn't be bothered. I'm flogging the god damnedthing right now....I'll stick to my brilliant Fujis and Leicas thanks...

    Settle down, mate. It's not worth the high BP you get from such outbursts. I use Sony, Fuji, Canon and RIcoh now and all of them have pros and cons. GR series is unique, compact and offers great IQ. Like I said it's not a camera for everyone, but it's definitely great and fun to have one. Also I don't see the hype for it as much as for example X100V and X100VI. Cheers!

    @@DigitalRetro LOL, not an outburst at all - you should see me when I do have one ! Obviously every camera has it's own merits but there are so many Ricoh fanboys out there extoling it's virtues you'd think it was a gift from god. But as we all know, god doesn't exist. Sure, it's handy to be able to slip this thing into your pocket but nothing else is good about it at all....Have fun...

    For me it`s fine - well at least for downloading RAWs and JPEGs to my tablet - didn`t have any problems with it actually.

    Its a bugger but on the other hand it’s small enough you can put another one in like your wallet and carry the replacement with ease.

    Please turn the music off when you are narrating the video, the music drowns out your voice - it's awful!

    The music is faded about -12 / -14 db while i do the VO. Music is on 1 channel and VO on second - i think there is some issue on your side while playback(some reported this), but on most devices it`s all good. Did you watch on computer or a phone?
