I really think the moments of levity in 3 are needed because it’s almost constant dire situation. Shepard does not feel comfortable with taking time off, they constantly remark how they shouldn’t be doing this when there’s a war going on. But you NEED to rest and try to relax during stressful times or you’re gonna go insane. Shepard has already gone through 2 years of world saving that they deserve these moments of rest.

  • @TheBackwardsLegsMan

    @TheBackwardsLegsMan

    Жыл бұрын

A well written story will have those moments of levity in such a way that it doesn't feel jarring. I constantly see people point this out in all kinds of fiction, and it irritates me. You're right that from a pacing perspective you NEED these moments of levity. Both narratively and to give the player a break from the constant tension. The solution is to structure your story in such a way that it feels natural to take those breaks. Ham fisting them in because those moments have to exist is called bad writing; it's the pacing equivalent of realizing you made your antagonist too strong and using a deus ex machina to resolve the plot. Clearly we NEED the protagonist to succeed, so I guess we just break the plot to allow it. Don't get me wrong, it's not jarring enough to ruin the game or anything, but it does kick you out of you suspension of disbelief sometimes, and I've seen this exact problem addressed in a lot of fiction. Hell, this very game does it with the Citadel DLC with a simple throw-away line about how the Normandy is getting the hell beaten out of it and they need to perform maintenance.

If he really wanted to not miss out he would just play ME2 and ME3 offscreen on his own time. Oh, right, because Woolie has this stupid thing where he only wants to play a game once and never again while also having this goblin of needing to never miss crap, so Reggie playing somehow counts as him already playing the game for some reason.

to be fair most previous Reaper cycles seemingly *did* just go "rock up to planet > glass it > move on" from what i recall. it's implied from planet descriptions they basically found some way to cut the gordian knot and handle it with maximum economy of effort every time, doing things like obliterating all biospheres in a given system and just waiting for any dug-in survivors to suffocate or starve. it's basically only the Protheans and current cycle that were too resilient and widespread and necessitated actual ground warfare.

Literally for the same reason he states the opposite, actually. "The Reapers are thousand foot spaceships!" Yeah, so how could they possibly interact with the galaxy aside from stomping it underfoot? They needed Saren and the geth the open the relays, they needed the collectors to harvest humanity pre-invasion, and now they need infantry and other units to dig out all resistance across the galaxy. I actually LOVE how you see different species become Reaper troops over the course of the game. The first you see is cannibals and husks, because obviously humans and batarians are plentiful in the early stages of the invasion. As you come to aid the turians, you start seeing marauders and brutes. When the invasion finally comes to Thessia, you see the asari as banshees. It's fucking awesome, and I love that sense of progression.

For me, seeing Woolie and Reggie riff off of the interesting characters and having conversations about dilemmas is what's most interesting. I've gone through all the games a bunch of times so I don't watch for the game or the choices; I watch for the people playing the game. While this isn't Woolie's reason, I do think that going Red-Blue-Red is unintentionally more engaging because they both have to suffer from the consequences of the other which in turn gives more material they can riff off of. If you watch to see one person go through the games then I can totally understand why people are upset though.

I don't know why people are convinced that the primary objective of Reapers is to kill earth's population until it gets down to zero when we've given every indication that killing is a means to an end. That end is consumption. What Reapers do is HARVEST sentient life. It's in the name itself, reap as in a farmer reaping a crop. So it seems like the Reaper MO is... Step 1: Destroy any militaries capable of opposition. Step 2: Secure the survivors and indoctrinate them. Step 3: Use indoctrinated survivors to locate stragglers. Step 4: Consume all of them for resources. Step 5: Leave the galaxy. Go to sleep. Wait for next cycle. What we see in ME3 is just the FIRST step. As soon as a representative from humanity or the Council says, "Hey, we give up." then it's very plausible that the Reapers will stop obliterating entire cities and will move on to steps 2 and 3, which can take centuries as established in the lore. It's important to remember that, were it not for coincidence and the Protheans' efforts, the galaxy would have NO idea what the Reapers are or what they want. They wouldn't know that this is an existential fight. If it weren't for Shepard, I think it would be extremely likely that the rest of the galaxy would see Earth getting shock-and-awed and then would sue for peace with the Reapers, ignorant of the fact that there's no 'buying time' with Reapers and that making peace with Reapers is just delaying extinction. We can assume that MOST cycles had no warning or knowledge of Reapers before they attacked. These giant space shrimp appeared and wiped out their strongest militaries almost instantaneously. I bet most civilizations surrendered to this threat without realizing that they were exposing themselves to Indoctrination because they had no idea Indoctrination was even a thing.

Why are you all acting like they are different people playing and Woolie only played 2. You count as co-op playing if you're there on the couch. Did none of all have friends growing up?

The channel is called Woolie vs. Not Reggie vs. We love Reggie but this is an iconic role-playing game that Woolie advertised he would play, when he is not actually playing, he is watching. You are seeing people in different levels of investment. Twitch are the ones who are the most invested in Woolie, since you have to be online exactly when he is streaming, and so his biggest fans are there. Then goes Reddit, which doesn't need a time investment but does need a social investment, as the content isn't there, so you have people who are invested in Woolie but may not necesarily see him in a good way. And then you have KZread, the place with the least investment needed, and so you have a far bigger range. I would say that KZread is the best one to show the average sentiment about Woolie, since it has less of a chance to become the echo chambers that high investment places tend to be.

The "emoji wheel" in Dragon Age 2 actually isn't bad, even if its nowhere near as good as just having a silent protagonist with a lot of choices. 6 of the emojis were tied to up, middle, and bottom on the wheel much like the Paragon, neutral, and renegade options were in Mass Effect, and even had roughly the same layout. The ones at the top were generally good and helpful like a paragon, middle was funny and charming, bottom was hostile and aggressive like a Renegade. I think they were also color coded in blue, purple and red respectively. Meanwhile, all the other emojis were colored yellow/gold, and were simple enough to understand, like question marks or crossed swords to represent asking for more information and startinf combat.

It so fucking massively changes the scope of the game. I think Pat is absolutely buggin trying to equate this to a watch order convo, when they are still going through the games in order, together, carrying over the decisions that will transfer between the two characters (which seems to be most of them excluding romantic choices, or anything they deliberately ask Asuna to alter). This is my first ME playthrough im watching and i've never played myself, but it is at least a completely unique kind of playthrough that no other content creator would probably conceptualize. I think that's cool, and i like doing a little fun brain work to try and canonize the body switch whenever i can, but thats just me. If i want the pure, one character experience, i will go watch someone else play through it after. There are BILLIONS of choices out there. i'm even more intrigued to do so now after experiencing it in this way and seeing all up in the games' guts. But i like our shapeshifting, borderline INSANE, promiscuous protag. I could totally be missing some over arching continuity issue that will not work with the way they've chosen to go through the series, or that makes Pat's strange comparison more salient, like i said, this is my first time through. If you read this and can clue me into that, please let me know, i just want to understand.

Woolie had to take the worst possible way to tackle the ME trilogy. The game is about choice and consequences of those choices, they build from one to another towards a goal (a good part of why the ME3 ending was so horrible was because of that, all your decisions were made towards a single goal, stop the Reapers, and the ending shat over all those decisions). By doing this flipflop of players and characters you are left without a complete path for both Red AND Blue, meaning that you are already screwing over the payoff of their choices by having holes where they didn't get to choose at all. Combine that with Woolie backseating like hell because he wants to play ME3 and you are left with a show that is worse that if he had go full Red from the start or even just stayed with Blue.

I agree with Pat here, I do love the flip and change but Woolie kinda missed a point. It's the same series and you're going in order but you're definitely skipping around a different character's journey in that series. There have been other series with two perspectives that you see concurrently and this is like watching 2/3 of one and 1/3 of the other but saying you watched the series.

I've had 3 hours of sleep, and still watching as I'm typing. A year or so out from ME4 they do a Red Shepherd ME2 run back, and a Blue Shepherd ME3 run back. Ending with a "Blue Shepherd" (If Shepherd is still main character) ME4 run so it's got a more stable flow fron ME3 to a ME4 LP. There could be a Reggie LP of Mass Effect Andromeda either before or after ME4. IDK just an idea from a sleep deprived idiot.

I like (read: it is very weird) how Pat continues to accuse Woolie of playing the series out of order even AFTER all the clarification that the LPs are not only in chronological order, but continuing to port the last game's decisions forward. Also Woolie I don't really know how to give you a vibe check on the Citadel DLC thing since I can't make it to streams much, but if you don't intend to play ME3 for yourself in the future I highly encourage you to at least get a Citadel DLC save for Blue prepped for your own private use one way or another. You'll see why I think you could still enjoy a second round of it once you get there.

The idea of "Why is Earth important" is just BAFFLING. My guys? The entire Mass Effect series is space politics from Earthlings as a new comer's perspective. Mass effect 1 is all about Humans gaining a foothold in universal politics. Mass Effect 2 is literally about a group of space racists trying to dominate said universe politics and mass effect 3 is bringing the threat home so you can end it.

It is EXTREMELY weird, the way Woolie is doing this. I don't care, it's entertaining, but it does make me a bit sad that they're not really experiencing the amazing Mass Effect story in a way that makes sense. It's just for fun, it's just for laughs, and that's fine if that's all they care about, but I enjoy so much more about video games than that, and it's a bit of a shame they don't. Are people... not listening? Woolie said *in this video* that Red's choices carried into Blue, and now Blue's decisions have carried back into Red for 3. It's fundamentally the *same* save file carried over, all that has changed is the voice, face, and lover of Shepard and the person behind the controller. Is it a little weird? Yes, but it's not like he's not going to get the payoff of things set up between the games. The major decisions are still carrying over!

@@Zangelin Exactly. I would understand the criticism more if Reggie had only come in on ME3, or if Woolie had waited until now to take the controller, but no. They've been side by side the whole time, effectively talking out the decisions and coming to a mutual conclusion the whole way. There are subtle differences with Red and Blue, ultimately it's the same two dudes making the decisions, with the only difference being who has executive override privileges.

So, to be fair, the ME1 save file was NOT carried over to ME2 perfectly. There were a number of decisions in 1 that had been changed, though they were mostly all minor.
