Why Pressure Washing Your DPF is a Costly Mistake: A Technician's Insight

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video, Ryan discusses cleaning a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) from a Cummins X15 engine. He questions the effectiveness of pressure washing DPFs and highlights the complexity of their internal structure. Ryan, a professional DPF cleaner, emphasizes the need for extreme heat to break down soot bonds within the filter, which pressure washing cannot provide. He shares test results showing that pressure washing yielded no better results than a filter left uncleaned for 350,000 miles. Due to this, he recommends professional DPF cleaning over pressure washing for reliable, long-term maintenance.

I recently removed both my DPF and DOC. I had it washed at coin car wash. I had it dried out. Re installed next day. Then I did forced regen. All in all, cost me $20 in coins. And so far it's driven 12k miles and the light hasn't returned.

So did the customer just pressure his dpf and that was it?? If so then yes that would be pointless, done mine off the car used both a 2 types of dpf cleaner 1 acidic and 1 alkaline, flushed it through many times with a garden hose and no had any problems with it at all. The flow pressure has dropped from 290mbar at 3k to 60 at 3k.

Its really worth cleaning them, how often should they be cleaned? I have a 2019 T680 with the X15 and it has 469k miles, i bought it in January, im not sure if its been cleaned. OTR Diag says its 73% ash load, KW told me it needs cleaned every 500k miles. If the filter can last that long, i would just rather replace it.

I pressure washed mine until i had water spraying out the other side clean and clear about 4 feet took me seemed like 2 hours to fully clean it with a low power pressure washer but i think in the future i will clean myself kinda a headach but worth it if your willing to put in the time to actually clean it the first 10 min i had no water passage back and forth but eventually i started to get flow after one 20 min break and 2 hours later i was confident in the solution ordered the gaskets and a new clamp cuz i broke one put it back together and good as new in the beginning i was getting crankcase pressure sensor going off and leaking oil so i dove right into the dpf filter then after completion i went to the egr cooler cracked the hoses off took a peek then flushed it out with water (egr cooler was not that bad) plugged it back together was gonna look into the egr valve but by the cooler i speculated it was not bad either upon further investigation due to the dpf filter getting clogged and back pressure i had a crank case seal blow out so that turbine was not operating correctly replaced that seal spun it down the road and she never sounded more health good luck out there hope you are as successful as me beware when messing with clamps they will break be sure to properly seat all seals correctly or you will have a air leak be patient and you will see positive results i just did work on my truck estemated 15k worth of work i done the labor 1k dollars good luck guys keep a positive mind set fyi they can be pressure washed but thats hours cabt be done in 30 45 min take time and patience

Doing a forced regen the night before and pressure washing it works perfect, one can clearly see all the holes open up eventually I have Ancel obd scanner which has a function to test dpf blockage which reves up the engine to 2000 rpm and that would blow out what ever is remaining and you can feel the truck breath easy after that.

We took a BRAND brand new T880 kenworth with only 230K miles on it and straight piped it and it is extremely loud and rolls coal and even louder than the 6NZ pre emission in the other older kenworth and that one is not straight piped but it’s loud and it rolls coal too but the new kenworth we don’t use DEF fluid anymore and we have been stopped by DOT a couple times already and they have not put it out of service or anything but they were looking pretty hard at the truck being straight piped because nobody else has done that but we are burning more fuel it’s getting worse fuel mileage seems like 4 miles per gallon total but it’s making plenty of money and it’s not causing any problems the lights come and go on the dash so I hope this helps you out on your journey and we been watching you for years now but I never said anything to you until now but as far as the DEF FILTER we don’t even use it at all and the truck is able to run triple digits with no problems but we have gotten worse fuel mileage 💖💖💖 Poptart

We use hot pressure washers, home-made blowers and especial technics to clean PDF's and DOC's. The company doesn't care if the filters come back 2 or 3 months later. The stupid drivers are going to idle the trucks anyway for a long time and clog up the filters again

Just a thought off assumption. Possibly it didn’t go well for this customer, because the filter was beyond help. If you stay ahead of it and knock soot out periodically, will probably work out a lot better. To get a total cleaning though I’m sure you’re going to need that 1000 + degrees. You can only get the very loose and fine soot with a pressure washer. But that is better than none, can’t see why it wouldn’t help.
