    Hi Rip, I have been practicing my jerk but it sounds different to how you described. When I jerk, I press my bar not only once, but many times. I will also alternate each pressing motion with a counter pulling movement. So the end result is a steady push/pull motion of my hands around the bar, until the jerk is completed and then I perform the clean, to wipe any excess accumulative moisture. Then I smoke a cigarette. Thanks!

    In a perfect jerk, shoulders/arms/hands are only used to keep the bar from flying away:^)

    Off topic rant: I have been watching a lot of competition lifting lately. I did not realize that excessive back arching was allowed. Some of these folks arch their back so much that they only have to move the bar a few inches to complete the lift. I understand the role of back arching for proper mechanics to limit the stress on the shoulder, but geez, some of these folks are straight contortionist and it is plain silly. Rant over.

    It seems you're posting about the bench press. With all due credit to strength & skill, the shorter ROM of barrel-chested, big-bellied, short armed athletes is what makes champions. Not only does arching further shorten ROM, it activates more of the pecs & lats. If the glutes are on the bench, the arch is ok.

    People like Scott Mendelson have even said the reason they have such a large gut is to reduce that ROM

    Depends on which jerk you're talking about. Push jerks are't all that difficult to learn to do right. Split jerks definitely are.

    If the jerk has any value for upper body strength, it probably comes from the negative. It is known that negatives can be useful, but probably not enough to justify replacing the press with the jerk.

    The Jerk is a catching motion lift. You jump ''under'' the weight. Which means, it is a lower body movement primary.

    If modern strongmen trained the technique properly than they could likely put up some impressive numbers, same with heavyweight weightlifters.

    How come you use a squat with the rebounding stretch reflex instead of a paused squat? I know using the squat with the stretch reflex helps you lift more weight, & it may seem doing it in a way where you can lift more weight can make you stronger, but doesn't the paused squat make you rely less on momentum & assistance from the stretch reflex & make you rely more on using the strength of your muscles, thus in turn possibly developing strength better than the squat with the stretch reflex?

  • @samppa_3081

    @samppa_3081

    Why would using lower weights develop strength better? The "momentum" is caused by your muscles applying force to the bar. Why would you not wanna train the stretch reflex too?

  • @Hast91

    @Hast91

    The stretch reflex is a muscle contraction with very high mechanical tension. Therefore, the momentum built by the stretch reflex is just a result of normal application of force by contracting muscles.

    Pause squat develops the hips more than the normal squat. We already deadlift so that base is covered more than well enough. It's the same thing with the bench, we use the stretch reflex to get more tricep work out of the bench.

    Never to late, in fact, now is probably the best time ever. Make sure you do the program correctly. Use proper form on all your lifts, eat with a caloric surplus (to gain weight), make sure you eat enough protein, carbs and fats daily, and make sure you get sufficient sleep. I recommend buying Rip’s book Starting Strength Third Edition (the blue one) and/ or looking on KZread for more information about lifting, programming, and nutrition. Because you’re a novice, I suspect that running the program correctly will get you all kinds of gains. Best of luck to you, sir.

    Search youtube for all of the clean and jerk fails. Now search for press fails. Some of those clean and jerk fails resulted in some serious injuries, in one case that I know of permanent paralysis. Let's move on.

    The answer is the Olympic jerk is tough to learn and takes a modicum of athleticism to get good at , and the press is easy to teach an orangutan and is still effective.

    I read that prior to its removal, athletes typically spent 40% of their time on clean and press. Even if this is somewhat inflated, the other lifts were is second and third place.

    @@senselessnothing Agreed. The true test of overall strength. The ultimate. The Press, the manly strict press, was the gold standard not only in Weightlifting but in weight lifting. When someone wanted to gauge your raw strength, the usual question was: ''how much can you press?'' (After performing a clean, of course. Pressing off the racks was never considered athletic) When the IWF decided to drop the Press in 1972 as a contested lift, many purists simply lost interest in the sport of Weightlifting. And the decline of Weightlifting's popularity in the US coincided precisely with the Press's abolition in 1972 and with the new emerging strength sport back then (late 60's and early 70's): Powerlifting. The rest is history...
