Are you really an indie music fan if you haven’t heard of Phoebe Bridgers? I mean how could you have not? Even if her music doesn’t connect with you, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to ignore her talent. Between releasing two solo records, forming an all-female supergroup and producing for other indie artists, the singer-songwriter has guest appeared on tracks with everyone from Lord Huron to Fiona Apple, The National, Kid Cudi, Bright Eyes, The 1975, Hayley Williams, Lorde and soon to be on Taylor Swift’s upcoming Red redux and The Killers’ upcoming Pressure Machine.
In just a few short years, Phoebe Bridgers has gone from rather unknown to an absolute indie darling. The release of her sophomore record Punisher garnered her four Grammy nominations including Best New Artist and saw her labelled as “one of the most important artists of this generation.” Let’s take a closer look at how PHOEBE BRIDGERS became indie’s new cult favorite.

    I think calling Ryan Adam's and her relationship a "short lived relationship" that inspired a "cheeky breakup track" is kinda bad. It was an abusive relationship that inspired a song about how his emotional abuse effected her. She was literally one of several women who came out with allegations of abuse and assault against him. I love the channel and the vid but that part rubbed me the wrong way, and I'd appreciate if u at least pinned a comment correcting it. Edit: I editted a few words to sound less aggressive, sorry!

    Yeah, I'm glad not the only one who took issue with that. It's not really a "cheeky break up song", it's more of a "This was one of the most traumatic relationships of my life and I need a way to process it" song, and not acknowledging it as such is kind of a disservice to both the song and Bridgers as an artist and human being. It's a shame too, because otherwise it's a great video. I just think it was a case of very poor wording/phrasing in that instance.

    I'm completely with you, calling it cheeky just feels a bit off putting... Also love Middle 8s videos and the rest of the video is great, but I just wanted to echo that it felt wrong hearing it passed over like that. Since it's not the main topic of the video I get it was probably not researched but would be nice to have a note mentioning that she's expressed it was a low point for her and not a cheeky fling.

  • @Middle8

    @Middle8

    Only meant her wordplay in that one line was cheeky (she flat out says she faked it in bed with him every time). But I agree with you about the topical nature of the track. Like I say later in the video, much of Alps is about her dealing with trauma and her relationship with Adams is one of those examples. I wasn't looking to crucify Adams in this video. Their relationship was short and most likely due the emotional abuse he put her through. Thankfully she got herself out of it.

    @@Middle8 I don't know dude. Pointing out the fact that he was in a relationship with her while not acknowledging that it was manipulative and emotionally abusive isn't crucifying him. And giving him kudos for giving her career a (much deserved) boost while not pointing out that it was part of a predatory pattern of pursuing young musicians sexually and retaliating if they rebuffed him is actually the opposite - "Look at Ryan Adams, who saw immense talent before anyone else". I mean, he's got an entire section on his wikipedia dedicated to this. If I didn't already know the story I'd assume that it was just a relationship that fell apart like most relationships do. You either give the whole story (which only really needs another sentence to point out Adams' behaviour), or you don't mention him. You don't give the story of the Manson Family and just mention that they dropped by a party at Sharon Tate's house. There's more information there that's important.

  • @Middle8

    @@jamesfaulkner6842 mentioning Adams was solely to explain the turning point in her career - not necessarily giving him kudos for a musical discovery. My intention wasn’t to overshadow or downplay their relationship, it just wasn’t the focus of this video. I wanted to highlight her music. Phoebe is more than her previous relationship with Ryan Adams but you’re right, that kind of abuse isn’t something to ignore and perhaps I should have added a line about it. It’s something I’ll keep in mind moving forward.

    What a bad call to describe boygenius as "a therapy group" for these 3 gifted women and their work(s). It definitely offers much more than this slight of hand misnomer. Baker, Bridgers and Dacus are each highly talented artists; their combined voices and words provide listeners an aural and emotional treat. "Therapy" is never that easy LOL!!

    So, I love Phoebe… and had this sense of “I know that name” and then checked my playlist… I don’t have her. Listening to this there’s like 20 songs I recognize! Annoying that I didn’t download the songs I love!

    I’d honestly not heard of this artist but it looks like I should check her out! Bright eyes was (is?) one of my favorite bands ever (especially during the late 00’s and early 2010’s) and I truly think Connor Oberst is one of the modern eras true folk poets when it comes to his lyrics. He truly helped me get through a bad opiate addiction by giving me something to relate to through it all. Anyway, the fact that he collaborated with her quite a bit must mean her stuff is right up my alley.
