Why People Hate Liturgy // Video Essay

From the strange, philosophical ramblings and beliefs of Haela-Hunt Hendrix, the self-coined genre of 'transcendental black metal', the musical and cultural shift of black metal in the 2010's, the polariziation of transgenderism in the metal community, the burst beat and Anthony Fantano, here, I go into some of the intricate and complex issues that have led collectively to Liturgy and its frontwoman to being one of THE most polarizing, divisive names in not only black metal, but modern metal.

I have wanted to make a long-tail essay on this topic for awhile, and am very happy with how this came out! Super excited to share it with y'all! But what are your thoughts on the band Liturgy, and Haela? Do you like them, hate them, neutral and don't care? Be sure to let me know down below!!!!!!! Can't wait to hear it. Stay heavy, keep it metal, rock on, and have yourselves a fantastic rest of your day or night, depending on which sliver of the world you come from!!!!!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

Love the music of Liturgy, but Haela is weird as shit. And this comes from another transcendental trans girl who shares the name Ravenna with her. She's the only other one I've heard of. Fascinating, as you say, but... fuckin' crazy. Faetooth, Pupil Slicer, Feminazgul, or underscores, also great music but not biblically delusional.

One thing that's always grossed me out with the Liturgy hate is how in like any other situation where a black metal musician/band has objectionable opinions on anything you're always gonna hear about how you're a huge pussy or whatever if you can't get past it, and it's often about shit like nazism/racism/nationalism, or even pedophilia in some more extreme circumstances. But then, HHH is just strident about her opinions on black metal and comes out as trans and everyone starts shitting their pants and their ability to "separate the art from the artist" goes completely out the door. THEREFORE, Liturgy really does a lot to highlight the clear right-wing bias within black metal and how lots of peoples' ability to separate the art from the artist only goes but so far, despite their wanting you to believe otherwise. I know that those aren't the only reasons people hate Liturgy, but any honest person can look at Liturgy's whole situation over the years and know that HHH's gender identity/sexuality/philosophy at least a huge reason for a large amount of the hate. I love black metal as a whole, like even a lot of the more objectionable stuff, and love Liturgy's music too. I think HHH is extremely precocious and of course I don't like to see someone openly bringing Christianity into black metal. BUT you really gotta respect her for being as brave as she is and doing something truly different. If one of the main points of black metal is transgression, you have to admit that she's done a 10/10 job of transgressing... the irony of people hating her for that is very rich, and I think any honest person who knows the whole situation should be able to admit that. P.S., awesome video, thanks for tackling the subject thoughtfully and expressing opinions that aren't always well-taken within metal!!!

I liked liturgy's greg fox era, had some decent stuff. I think the main reason I'm not too big on Liturgy is because hhh is the heiress to an old money east coast oil empire. Her family is worth est $15 billion, i mean they own a football team too lol, look it up. I think liturgy is case and point a "don't ask the musician why her parents' names are in blue on Wikipedia" band. I want to admit something: when HHH came out as a transgender woman, to me, all of her beliefs expressed through her lyrics and her manifestoes all of a sudden made sense to me. It was very clear that her music and art is very much seen through a feminine perspective, one that was really closeted for a long, long time. Plus, pre-transition,she already had long hair, so she looks very very natural as her true self (if I am being bigoted unintentionally, let me know and I’ll change that observation). I think she is a bit of a genius, myself!

Not heard of this band before, but they sound absolutely fascinating. To be honest, I grew away from metal at the end of the 80's, because it was becoming so inward looking musically - everything sounded the same, and any deviation was attacked. Top that with the 'schoolboy trying to upset their parents' lyrical content, and I just found myself not that bothered about listening anymore. HOWEVER, with the likes of Lingua Ignota and Zeal And Ardor on the scene, metal seems to be getting really interesting again - maybe it has been for a while and I just haven't been around to notice, my bad. I'll be checking out Liturgy, thanks, and if you (or anyone) happens to have any recommendations for metal that is forging its own musical path, I'd appreciate recommendations, thanks.

Just in case you weren't aware of it, there's a Bandcamp project called Black Metal Rainbows (they've subsequently made a book under the same title) which contains tracks from several queer and left-leaning bands. Along the topic of a "one band genre/subgenre," the band Tragedy out of NYC labels their music "disco metal" (there might be other DM bands, but I'm not aware of any).

I feel bad as someone who has never liked Liturgy all that much because it's impossible to get into discussions of why without chuds speaking up like I give a shit about Hendrix's gender. I just always found the project pretentious with no substance under it, going from a mid-grade blackgaze band to a mid-grade avant garde outfit that spends more time LOOKING profound and artistic than having any actual depth. The transition I fear had the effect of removing nuance from the debate so now a lot of people see it as a case of making a statement for or against Hendrix as a human being rather than just the Liturgy project.

  • @TheMetalTempestYT

    @TheMetalTempestYT

Absolutely. And in general, you can dislike the music and it not have anything to do with the gender debate, I think people forget that. Sadly, I think the biggest thing I tried to make a point of here, is people that already hated the music used it as further ammo, and wrote her off entirely. They already saw her as kookie, since the pretentious label had been sunken into her for awhile by detractors. And so when she became something they hated as well, it fueled the flames of their hatred FOR her because of it. That's totally valid to just, not like her or her music or her beliefs, it doesn't have to be a personal attack. I think you hit a good point of "l that spends more time LOOKING profound and artistic than having any actual depth." Style over substance, yeah? There are tons of valid reasons to not enjoy the music and personally? I don't really...listen much. I've covered their albums, and have listened to their discography, but they'll never be the first band I reach for. Cheers!

First off, they were so fucking tight it almost sounded like a midi track at times, and their riffs were just... not like anything I'd heard before. Heavy, with some rhythmic similarities to black metal (in the drums and riffs) but the chords were not regular black metal chords, like more screamo-y? Almost uplifting at times? Also quite mathy. They pretty much blew my mind. But I was pretty fucking high on dxm and a took a hit off my friends dab pen so maybe it was just the drugs lol. Best metal bands i've seen: 1. Pyrrhon 2. Liturgy 3. I've heard Liturgy for the first time today and I was delighted. I never thought I would be delighted by a "black metal" band. If you take a black metal concert as a ritual, similar to greek tragedy, where you get rid of your anger, hate and disgust through catharsis, I can see why metal fans would feel betrayed. That's just not a part of the deal anymore. Similar thing could be said about affirmation (?) of christianty in a sceen that articulates itself through satanic imagery. The third part being the feeling they are playing with metal more than they are playing metal. And I'm not sure if that's a good or a bad thing. I'm neutral here. Those are the reasons I can see why people would get gatekeepy. Especially if this kind of thing becomes lucrative and floods their festivals. In a sence they have a sceen to "loose". But on the other hand the way she takes tools made for depicting darkness and paints a bright picture (of what? Despair? Mental breakdown? Religious delirium?) I is just fascinating and to be honest funny. I haven't laugh so much since Impaled Nazarene proclaimed themselfs to be fans of nuclear holicaust. And that's not a bad thing for sure. I'm defenetly going to listen to 96396 a few more times and probably through their whole discography too. As I said in the begining, I was delighted.

I'd consider myself an outsider to the the metal music community, but I'm aware of the bigotry within the black metal niche. I have a friend who's in a local black metal band, and he explained to me that some artists within the black metal niche are n*zis or embody other forms of bigotry, and that people who raise their voices against such hatred are often told that they need to just muscle through that stuff if they really want to enjoy black metal. So, if anything, it's nice to see black metal artists who are using their platform for anything that isn't bigotry, you know? And with that in mind, I'm not the least bit surprised that so much of the hate towards this band comes down to the fact that their front-person is transgender. Before I even clicked on this video, I already knew that Haela Hunt-Hendrix's gender identity was going to be one of the reasons. Sadly, I don't think that this is unique to the metal community, either. It breaks my heart to say it, but I believe that a transgender front-person would be on the receiving end of hatred regardless of what genre of music they create. I believe music is supposed to be something that unites us all, a place where the weird, creative people can find their voices and help us look at the world from a different angle, so it's sad that such a unique voice is being dismissed simply because people are afraid of what they don't understand. But, beyond all of that, I think Liturgy is an intriguing band. I've only recently discovered them, mostly because their 2023 album became a topic of discussion within the music forums I participate in, and I've gotta say I've never heard anything like them. I haven't really decided whether their sound appeals to me or not yet (I need to listen to more), but I've watched a few videos of them playing live and they are an extremely gifted group of musicians. They're extremely well-rehearsed, and it's amazing that they're able to execute such technical, lengthy compositions in a live setting. I can't call myself a fan yet, but I'm interested in them, and I get why people like this band. As for Haela herself, I wasn't really aware of any of the philosophical stuff, but I'm not that interested in it. If she wants to host philosophical seminars in the middle of a tour, that's cool, but I think I'll pass in favor of their concerts. When I listen to a band I care about enough, I am interested in learning a bit about who the people in the band are, but there are limits to that. Too much information, and I start to feel like I have some sort of parasocial relationship with the band, and I don't want that. The weirdest thing I found about Haela is that she comes from a billionaire oil tycoon family. That was a bit of a surprise, but the more I look into this band, the more it seems to add up. In terms of sheer numbers (I'm talking social media followers, album streams and downloads, and press), Liturgy isn't anywhere near as popular as other bands who are capable of going on a world tour. Yet, they toured for most of the year in 2023 on their latest record, which is not a possibility for most musicians. There are so many bands which are probably just as talented and innovative as Liturgy, but you will probably never hear about them because they can't afford to tour all the time and market their music at large scales. I want to make it clear that that's not a critique of Liturgy, though. I'm a musician, and you better believe that if my family was made of billionaires that I would use that money to promote the shit out of my music. It's more a critique of the system we live in, which gives limitless advantages to the wealthy while everyone else has to work hard just to survive. Most people can't even afford to play music at all unless they work a shitty job that exploits them, you know? All of that said, I'm glad that Haela Hunter-Hendrix is using her position of privilege to create such strange, genre-bending artwork. And, despite having all the advantages that come with being an oil-tycoon heir, she's obviously still a very hard worker. I don't think that anyone should be a billionaire, but at least she's doing something cool with her money instead of whatever Elon Musk is doing. Tl;dr - The bigotry makes me really sad. This is an intriguing band who is making history whether the sound appeals to you or not. It's true that Haela Hunt-Hendrix comes from a privileged position when it comes to her family's wealth, but I'm glad that she's using that privilege to create such innovative artwork.

I think there are people who see music and art as part of a search for God and there are people who see music as Something Very Cool and that second group of people always seem repulsed when people are noticably trying very hard to accomplish something outside of playing Very Good or being Very Cool. And I think that's really fucking corny. Outside of a handful of artists, I can't think of anyone else trying to make something that has direct and legitimate political, philosophical and religious implications upon the world at large with their art, to where it's not this vain disposable moment of protest where you just show up and show out, amounting to nothing, but an entire framework to creating a system that delegitimizes violence as the operative function of power. It feels so much more pretentious to me to be this cynical nihilist internet arbiter of effortless cool that cringes at anyone trying too hard to find worth or meaning that isn't contingent on the reward of social capital. I wish more people were writing whole religions about why they do what they do. Maybe the world would be a better place if people put the same amount of care into shit as she does. I would be high on myself too if I felt like I had found something real through my art. Something actually worth having faith in in this fucking internet sea of nothing. I would hold onto it and make operas about it and defend it with my life

It seems more made for kids that went to Columbia University and also have billionaire parents that never tell them no. Being trans is awesome, but there’s the other aspect of extreme privilege and pretension. Like who else can just hire Steve Albini casually? Also not cool with the christianization of black metal which is what she’s doing.

But in all seriousness I personally don't like Liturgy because of the way HHH used to hold herself back when I interacted with the music project. I haven't followed or hate followed them since the 2015 so I'm just more neutral twords them. Hell I didn't know HHH is Trans until I heard it mentioned on another video by you. Look if you like them, great. If you don't like them, great. Just don't hate them on the basis of the music or if you don't like HHH's philosophy. Going after something as shallow or low hanging such as being trans just shows that whoever is using that to attack someone is very immature. Stuff like that really shouldn't matter

It's very much the result of an incredibly rich artist having little to no actual creative inclination or want to just, you know, make good music. On top of that, throwing every single person born into money into the garbage is dumb, especially when that person uses their given resources to literally create a Marxist religion???

Theres a lot of over generalizations in this video and declarations . I would say most people who dislike Hunter for the trans thing is because they think “yeah OF COURSE your trans now” because people think hunter is riding a bandwagon of controversy and just purposely being subversive because Hunter comes off very pretentious herself. As far as bigotry in metal in the modern era, I would have to disagree with your view. I think this is very geographical and depends on the subgenre. You cannot sit there and claim that metal and black metal in a place like portland oregon is going to be anything but accepting and socially progressive. You’re going to find the opposite in places like Poland or Finland. You basically lumped all these different subgenres and regions together as a giant scene and called it currently and historically racist and homophobic when its more nuanced in reality.

My experience with Black Metal has been sparse and limited to popular Black Metal music released in the 2010s. I'd imagine purests would hate me and everything I represent on the basis that I'm unfamiliar with the legends and things they view as foundational to their genre. Really, I've only listened to Deafheaven, Botanist, and Liturgy. Even then, among these acts, I've enjoyed Liturgy's music the least. The gender identity of Haela Hunt Hendrix is neither here nor there for me. If anything it would make me bias in favor of their art but I just don't find it listenable. It annoys me. Not only that but this sonically garish music has an additional incoherent philosophy/religious perspective piled onto it. Isn't Black Metal supposed to be Satanic? Why is she advocating for this new sacred "God" trinity that she's amalgamated from Christianity and other religions? Not only this but in the video where she presents her conception of "God", I worry she is unwell throughout. Liturgy to me is a calamity and I don't know how to comment on it other than to say it's not very worthwhile or good.

The reason metalheads hate Liturgy is because metalheads have a very narrow taste in music, and if a band is not doing the exact same thing every metal band has been doing for the past 3 decades, and instead is exploring and pushing rhe boundaries of what this genre can truly be capable of, they whine about it. I’ve been around metalheads my entire life. I know. Personally I love metal and I’ve always felt it has so much unexplored emotional potential Kuz all the metal world cares about is their music just being the same 4 ideas/emotions/themes/aesthetics that have dominated metal for decades. Bands like Liturgy, and many other more experimental metal bands, have been demonstrating that metal can be vast, creative, diverse and most importantly, a cataclysmically powerful vehicle for a wide range of human emotional expression.

I have mixed opinions on transgenderism. When I was first introduced to the concept I had less shock than most, I honestly did not care and kind of thought it was cool. The problem is that meeting trans people made ne resent them. If someone is trans and is chill I have no problem, but in my personal experience (with big emphasis on personal and experience) every trans person that came into my life was a negative figure, being the kid who tells mom. I once was banned from a group because I laughed at an edgy joke another member made (laughing is something involuntary) and the trans of the group was the one who told the leaders of the group by making a huge tantrum. This is only one of my experiences. This is not because trans is part of LGBT, I've met gay, lesbian and bisexual people and they have all kinds of people, yes I've met PC LGBs, but I've also met edgy ones and ones in between. I cannot say I hate all of them, or the concept by itself, but I cannot make myself publically condone them as I fear I am reaffirming people like the ones I've met.

That's the best thing about talking about these issues...it's so broad. And in general, sadly the extremists are the ones that get a voice. As someone on numerous spectrums, and with a ton of colorful friends, many of which are trans/enby, etc, most are just trying to exist in peace. They don't want special treatment like the major news stations cover. If anything, they're 10x more scared of the world than the world is scared of them. You have to take it with a grain of salt. Because we all have our demons to fight, and unfortunately, trans people just fight a lot more uphill battles in modern society for existing in such a split world, especially when parental figures are unaccepting, the online spaces are toxic, and real life is dangerous. There are tons of amazing LGBTQ+ people, and plenty of bad, just like any other group. It's just easy to parrot talking points from these news outlets because people don't know any better, and won't educate themselves/listen to anything other than their own beliefs.
