Why People Hate in Gundam Seed

Ойын-сауық

Gundam Seed is one of those shows that was immensely popular when it debuted, but has since left people's minds. Maybe it seems less relevant, or maybe it's just the product of the endless series of Gundam shows that have shown up to take its place. Regardless, I think it's worth remembering.
Fans of Gundam Seed might notice I make almost no mention of Gundam Seed Destiny. Aside from the fact that I didn't want to watch it again, I also wanted to focus on the superior first series. I have no plans on making a video about GSD for the foreseeable future.

honestly, yeah. Destiny soured my feelings on SEED when it first aired, as someone who spent my high school years defending SEED as a valid retelling of the original series with much different and contemporary themes - themes that still resonate today, in fact. Which isn't to say First's don't, not at all - but I thought the themes of hate and trauma in SEED, even then, were important for the period in which it originally aired and I originally watched it, terrible fansubs and all.

Its nice to see people finding the parallels between seed, and the 9-11 debacle. If original gundam is ww2-in-space, then seed is the first attempt at a gundam show with 21st century political climate. Other than the bloody valentine, there is another interesting 911-parallel; at the same time as seed and destiny is broadcasting, Japan is discussing whether it should send its self defense force to middle east, whether they should help their allies or continue to use their forces in self-defense role only. This plotpoint is reflected in seed and destiny by the Japan-stand-in nation of Orb Union; whether to join the alliance/plant or continue to be neutral, even in the face of pressure.

One thing I would say is that Kira's character arc isn't fully complete at episode 35. Kira does go through his arc, but I think there's a neat little mini arc at the end of the show, where the main villain tries to undermine Kira's progress. It's kind of a rare example I've seen of a sort of attempted 'devolution' of a character. Kira has to confront his past, and the possibility his actions are irredeemably tainted by them (as Rau's were tainted by his own origin). Kira then has to reject that kind of thinking and find emotional catharsis in the proof of Flay who is able to reconcile with him despite both of their pain. I also really like the analysis on hate and how it is such a poison in this show, driving both sides to greater and greater atrocities.

Seed has a great final battle in Gundam history. Watching Kira learned how to counter Providence Dragoons and how damaged Freedom became in the middle of the battle, Kira had a possibility to get a bad ending like Kamille in Gundam Z. Hardly. Seed was pretty wildly popular when it came out. People started to shit on it when destiny happened, and by extension that's where a lot of the kira jesus yamato memes came from. That said, a lot of the themes are things that are repeated through the gundam franchise. A lot of the direction involves characters standing around and talking in close up shots, characters/faces center in a still frame, which felt like a waste of the medium. This isn't something special to seed either, many other popular anime are guilty of this as well (sao). A lot of the things that felt flat to me were more related to the visual direction, and that it felt more of a soap-opera direction in the writing (even for gundam standards). Either way, people can go watch it for themselves and develop their own opinions of it. I saw both series in their entirety and have my own opinions on it.

Up til then the other Gundam pilots kinda overshadowed him (one being the protagonist, another being his friend and rival, one getting a new upgrade, and the last one died two episodes ago.) and I feel he didn't get much to do on-screen.

Two things: Not a regular to this channel and I was amazed someone was talking about Gundam Seed. Your points about the themes of Seed really opened up a new perspective for me it being a general discussion of hate, rather than a specific discussion on a type of hate is something I felt but you put it really nice words. Find it interesting you didn't mention Lacus, because she is often presented as a much more ideal leader than most of Seeds cast and often ask questions that force characters to think on those same prejudices, I think one of my favourite lines in Seed was from her "There is no future for those who have died. And what of those who did the killing. Is happiness to be found in a future that is grasped with blood stained hands? Is that the truth?" It's a fair question connecting to the premise that this story is about hate, obviously people can't love hate away especially if they are being killed, but is voilence the solution or is inflicting more trauma on all sides how we obtain that happiness. Really want to watch Seed again just to think about this some more. Secondly, I want to ask does Kira' s growth really end by episode 35? One of the major faults Kira as a character had was his inability to deal with his emotions and pain of the war. Kira became more distant and isolated as he grew through the series, crying in isolation up until he reached emotional exhaustion. I think his character sort of caps of after the reveal of his true identity when he cries with Lacus. Kira is the pilot hero who beats the bad guy but he finally has a genuine attachment with someone that he isn't desperate to protect all the time, someone he can allow himself to be vulnerable with. Which is pretty cool.

i do think that kira's growth ends at episode 35... but for a diferent reason to many people. that's when kira accepted that he would never become a normal person again, that he would probably die horribly in the battlefield(something that scared the whole series up to that point). its also the moment when he trully became... broken. that's why he is diferent after that, and why he "doesnt grow anymore". because he is a dead man walking. which is also why he isnt a hero, he will fight the war, he will stop the atrocity that will happen if he doesnt, and he will avoid killing as much as possible. but to himself, he is a monster who doesnt deserve to live. even after seed, which is why he tells lacus in SD that he is "ok now". if anything, Kira became the anti Hiero.

On the topic of growth, the character who had the biggest growth would be Flay.. she's the driving force that made Kira grow as well.. that's why when they got separated, Kira became a shell.. "like a deadman walking " .. only then when he saw her again did he show emotion.. Flay's character development startes from the beginning of the series until the end.. it's sad that they have to kill her off because the wife of the author likes Lacus more.. they had plans for her, the gundam Cagalli had was supposed to be for her and more. Even the author said in a conference that Kira's heart always belonged to Flay.. She's the one he must protect.. that's what he said in contrary to what he said about Lacus in destiny "it will bother me if i can't protect her". And even in destiny Kira never cried as a nod to her.. in the game, u will also see Flay behind Kira on one of his special boost.. just adding on to the fact that she helped Kira's growth or strength..

Let's just say the writer for SEED and SEED DESTINY was made by the same person and that person would not allow anyone else to write the scripts and would just SLAUGHTER anyone that goes against him/her. @@TheTrueAdept I found this on the trivia page of TV Tropes. Look at the last one. What Could Have Been: The original script called for the Strike Rouge to be built by the Earth Alliance instead of Orb, with Azrael placing Flay as its pilot due to her hatred of Coordinators and hoping to use her position as a Fallen Princess to stir up pro Alliance sentiment. Another rejected concept for the ending involved Azrael sending Flay back to the Archangel with a bomb implanted inside her, and her and Sai dying outside the ship in order to spare the others. Also in the same interview, Kira was originally going to be killed off, and Athrun would lose an arm in the final episode. Another idea for the ending would be an ending that was even more of an Kill 'Em All styled ending than the actual ending, with Athrun (while still being maimed in this version as well) apparently being the only surviving member of the main cast. Unlike the other examples, evidence from both the show and interviews suggests that this was indeed going to be the ending of the series and only was averted because the voice actors got too attached to their characters and the immense popularity of the Seed characters among the viewers. Kira was supposed to die and Athrun is the sole survivor. Cosmic Era does have the potential but poorly executed. Natural-Coordinator conflict is a great concept and it gives a fresh content to Gundam franchise. Stargazer is the only good thing that came out of Destiny and the GuAIZ are underutilized in Destiny especially the R model.

@@dynamicworlds1 No answers about passing basic training, but it's mentioned in episode 13 of GSD that the military did not choose Shinn to be the Impulse's pilot: Durandal did. Arthur says that he (and implicitly the rest of the Minerva's crew) expected Rey to be named the Impulse's pilot, but Durandal surprised everyone by giving the Impulse to Shinn instead. They were initially confused by Durandal's decision, but after the events of episode 12 (i.e. Shinn enters SEED mode for the first time and takes down half a dozen ships, two mobile suit carriers, and a brand new mobile armor all by himself in a matter of minutes) they understood it. Durandal analyzed Shinn's DNA and knew he had the potential for SEED mode all along. Later reveals in Destiny add more layers to Durandal's decision to give Shinn the Impulse. Durandal had the Destiny Plan at the back of his mind for a while and anticipated that Kira would oppose it, so he needed someone to take Kira out beforehand. But people with piloting skill rivaling the Ultimate Coordinator's are extremely rare. He knows Athrun qualifies, but prior to the start of Destiny, he doesn't know where Athrun is and is unsure where his loyalties lie. Rey wanted to fight Kira on Durandal's behalf, but if Rau couldn't beat Kira, Durandal couldn't count on the man's sibling clone to defeat him either. In comes Shinn, an immigrant from ORB suffering from survivor guilt and PTSD. The kid is at his most psychologically vulnerable (and thus easily manipulated to his cause)... and he has the SEED mode gene (so he can become a pilot as skilled as Kira or Athrun if pushed hard enough). Shinn has everything Durandal needs for an anti-Ultimate Coordinator weapon, so he insists on making sure Shinn becomes that weapon. This includes giving Shinn the Impulse, pardoning him for breaking Stella out of ZAFT custody just in time to pilot the Impulse during Operation Angel Down, and giving him the Destiny as a reward.

The "Jesus Yamato" moniker came from those gundam fans that revere Kira as "The best Gundam Protagonist" not necessarily because of his abilities. And also there's the fact that he survives explosions even previous gundam protags (except for Heero "self destruction boy" Yuy) couldn't. I honestly think Gundam SEED would've been infinitely better if Athrun was the protagonist, not Kira. Now that I've watched the first two of the main three(UC), I can say that SEED tried to recapture the magic of eaarly UC, they succeeded to a degree by giving us a new "newtype" but for everything else, now that I'm looking back on SEED, all I can say is "wow, that's just what they exactly did in 79 and Zeta. Just think about it, an enemy soldier being captured/ defecting to your side, would make the story far more interesting when the whole schtick of the SEED series is banking on the fact that "this series is a remake of gundam 79" Also, watch Gundam Turn A, it is Tomino's Magnum Opus and you can't convince me otherwise.

I always find this Jesus Yamato strange to hear. I can explain why Kira survived the Aegis self-destructing: He was originally intended to die in that scene, but the writers decided to bring him back in the episode he was revealed to be alive (which was the very next episode BTW). This is basically what happened to Andrew Waltfeld as well (apparently the head writer wanted more "older man" characters when he was brought back); and is... *Probably* what happened with Mu in Destiny - admittedly, it's a bit hard to tell what was originally planned about Destiny when so much of it was influenced by the "fans" and the head writer's own hang ups, like shafting Cagalli's character because he hated her voice actor. All of which is say that this is an explanation, not an excuse. Even though Gundam SEED is my favorite Gundam series (and trust me, "8th MS Team" and "War in the Pocket" make for VERY stiff competition; and I've found something to enjoy in almost every Gundam series), when people talk about SEED's habit of bringing characters back from the dead and Kira's resurrections specifically, and how they're bullshit; I will agree with them: it's a genuine writing flaw with the show. And no amount of after-the-fact justifications will fix that, like Kira ejecting the Strike's cockpit(... yes, that was the official reason at some point). And if someone says those survivals are why they don't like the show? I say "that's fair", because we all have different kinds of bullshit we're willing to put up with to enjoy a show, especially Gundam. Actually, if you'll give me a moment to vent, I had an interesting experience with Turn-A Gundam. See, I heard from people on a Gundam forum that Loran was Kira "done right". I... didn't really see what they saw: he spends most of the show fighting things that are bad at MS combat - demonstrated by when they get slaughtered by "real" MS in the latter third of the show - and when Loran fights those same "real" MS? His no-kill rule was almost immediately dropped. Here's the thing though: I actually really liked Loran! I clearly understood his motivation and why he has a no-kill rule; his hope and optimism made him really stand out in a cast full of psychos and grumps; and he dresses like a girl because Tomino wanted for him to be a girl, but the executives wouldn't let him. He's not even the only character I really liked in it ether. The main thing that kept me from really enjoying Turn-A was how almost all the other characters used violence as their FIRST solution to their problems. There's also some protagonist-centered morality in there too, though not as bad as in SEED Destiny... and characters tendancy to talk past eachother, but that's hardly unique to Turn-A.

Remember the scene when lacus sings on the arc angel and several crew members compliment her voice, but then ask how modifications were made to let her sing so well. Kira is offended by this and this is a central theme especially with ral la cruse. He seeks to watch mankind consume itself out jealous. Even the leader of blue cosmos recalls a group of friends being soundly beaten up a coordinator. And angrily asking his mother why she never made him a coordinator. The Kerberos Panzer Corps did nothing wrong. The Japanese government was plotting against and undermined them at every turn, despite them never ONCE comitting a single act of betrayal against the state prior to the government deciding to wipe them out first. Don't just watch Jin-Roh, watch the other 2 movies Red Spectacles and Stray Dog (the chronology is Jin-Roh, Stray Dog, Red Spectacles), and read the manga. Yes, ultimately their highest loyalty was to their fellow squadmates and not the state, but that's basically true of every police and military unit ever because they're the ones watching your back when the bullets start flying. Regardless, they did their job as a counter-terrorist unit without even a hint that their loyalty as a unit was wavering, yet the government was so paranoid that a group that's that good at killing terrorists might some day turn on them, that their answer was to create a self-fulfilling prophecy by massacring the Kerberos and thus turning them against the state. So the Kerberos attempt a coup to save their own skin, and are slaughtered. The only difference between the events in Jin-Roh vs the manga is in the manga, the girl kills Inui (the character Fuse is based on) because in the end she's still a terrorist and has no desire to end the cycle of violence, while in the movie Fuse kills Kei for the sake of the unit and because Kei is directly tied to a corrupt rogue faction of the state (Public Security). And the most telling part of it all was what the government replaced them with: genetically enhanced assassins with submachine guns who wear white suits and mime makeup with a permenant smile painted onto their face. A deliberate "putting a happy face on counter-terrorism" by the state, a way of making everything going on seem good and normal. You can call the Protect Gear the Kerberos wear authoritarian and imposing, and that's true, but that's the point. It's honest, it's blunt, it tells it like it is. It doesn't hide its cruelty behind a smile. That is the difference between them and the mimes, it is "we are oppressing you" vs "we are oppressing you, but don't worry about it, it's all ok, this is for your own good and you'll appreciate it in the end". As CS Lewis once famously said, to quote him here, "Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." Ghibli's Miyazaki talked about this very danger during his conversation with Mamoru Oshii in regards to Patlabor 2 the Movie.

Is it weird that I like Flay more than Lacus? Houko Kuwashima did a great job playing 2 characters at once in the scene where Natarle and Flay having a conversation. It's almost makes you think it was voiced by two people. CE is almost an antithesis to UC. Rau even said that people wont or don't want to understand even if Kira tell them. CE revolves around human nature and humanity's pursuit of progress by any means necessary. The reason Rau wears a mask is that he's a clone of a man that thought he can bribe Death and George Glenn regrets that him giving the manual to make Coordinators had created a much larger conflict. It's also an interesting take on Gundam with flaws in genetic engineering as Coordinators may need a Natural in order to survive as they are getting sterile due to breeding with fellow Coordinators. Flay is probably the best written character. She is a product of Blue Cosmos controlled media and this made her called a bitch by fans due to her behaviour towards Lacus and uses her body to manipulate Kira after he failed to save her father bringing the theme of violent cycle of revenge in Gundam. It's nice to see a video from someone who understand SEED instead of haters who simply trash-talk it. I wish I could give you more than one like. Keep up the good work!

I used to watch this show now and then when it was on YTV, but now I kind of want to go back and watch the whole thing and actually pay attention this time.

This has always been my favourite series and I have a lot of merch ranging from games, toys and manga just from Seed and Destiny. I can easily rewatch the whole series, while others that I enjoy tons such as Wing, is harder to revisit

I have very fond memories of Gundam Wing from my childhood... but rewatching it now, with my understanding of story telling, greater ability to grasp themes - its not very good. Its beautiful, the art is amazing, but it lacks in characters, story and meaningful themes... Endless Waltz is still really good, but Wing the series, yeah, I don't see myself revisiting it anytime soon. Seed, I am watching once more, as I do think its a very good Gundam Series (doing right the things I mentioned Wing failed at).

@@JustinVillemure it’s good to see that nostalgia isn’t blinding us for modern viewing. Just like many people back in the day, Wing introduced me to the Gundam franchise when it was on Toonami and I was obsessed as a kid but it’s not that great to watch apart from a few key battles. The same applies to video games such as Goldeneye. Amazing back in the day but painful to revisit all these years later, and yet people still blindly praise it as still been the best.

@@cabbage2587 I think you mean Londo Bell. Despite it's good intentions of dealing with the Titans AUEG was in the pocket of big business like Melanie Carbine. They also didn't have much of an idea of what to replace the Titans and Neo Zeon with, which just made way for their former leader to attempt his own colony drop.

@@congrilla- that only happened because of what happened to Kamille...if the AEUG had a more decisive victory I don't think it would have played out that way. Londo Bell still made way for the events of Hathaway's Flash. Londo Bell is also mostly former AEUG members...so it feels more semantic to say their better than the AEUG since its what they were previously.

It might be true that Seed handles this kind of analysis of hatred in a unique and interesting way. But I really don't think the video did a good job defending the overall quality of seed. I agree with Zeta, and frankly it's really hard to put Seed above any of my favourite Gundam series - even though Seed is where I started. Off the top of my head, Zeta and Turn A jump to mind as series that particularly touch on themes of hatred whilst also being, in my opinion, better series. I will say that Zeta in particular started off kind of disappointing to me, I actually just finished 79 and by the end of that series there's a fair amount of thematic depth. By contrast early Zeta seemed kind of meaninglessly edgy. I changed my mind later on, and Kamille is one of my favorite characters in fiction. That said, a lot of the new type stuff is really more about transhumanism than hatred. So I can see why Seed might be preferred for that kind of discussion. I don't agree, but it is a more straightforward look at such a theme.

@@congrilla- I would disagree that Londo Bell was better they are apart of the federation while the Aeug even with its problem were still contolists. Contolism can only be achieved when you destroy capitalism even Deikun called outs capitalists as a problem in his speech Zeon's Call. Char is a completely different person and his beliefs became closer to the Zabi's then what his father believed while char in zeta is closer to his father than the zabi's.
