If you came into Elden Ring expecting a linear Souls title, you played yourself from the get go. The game wants you to explore before speed running into the main bosses, it makes sense. There’s plenty of mini bosses to grind up before going down the main story

Spot on! Some people don't understand the idea of exploration and progression. The reason margit is a hard boss is because fromsoft wants the players to explore limgrave first and see what the open world has to offer. It is genius in my opinion because if you're really good at the game you can kill margit at a low level but if you suck - like most people - you retaliate and explore the world to become better in every aspect. The game naturally guides you to make that decision.

Not just that but of these open world games Elden Ring, imo, laid things out pretty well. Rarely is there an area that doesn’t reward a little exploring and sometimes (like where summit was) you go back there once you obtain something. Breath of the wild I couldnt quite get into because of almost the same reasons Summit gave for Elden Ring but that was mostly because it was an open space but there were also some patterns you could identify to find key points of interest. It felt similar to Skyrim. Elden Ring however feels packed with things to do.

People expect linear pathing and I feel Fromsoft took that knowledge and lead you to Margit which is both clever and awful, in short, it's because he is too difficult for most players but it also teaches you that you will need to learn from your mistakes and should take some time to level up and explore. That being said, I think FROM did a good job on letting the player know that you should try exploring other places because the Tree sentinel that is right outside the first step already should explain to the player that fighting them is an option and just because it's the first thing you see in the open area doesn't mean it should be fought.

@@debrabarber3483 I get wanting a difficulty option because I am someone who believes games should have some accessibility for players but overall it comes down to the vision and marketing of the game. With that out of the way, Elden Ring is pretty well another Dark Souls game under another IP IMO, that being said in all of those games there has never been microtransactions, or multiplayer required. The closest thing you had to accessibility was to summon an AI or someone in, but I know a few people, including myself, like to play these games solo first for the experience and the challenge. The game doesn't need to be coop only or MMO and has proved that through its other games and its success here. There are other people who share similar opinions as you have shared and it seems to come down to the same reasoning which is this game is to challenging to be considered fun or accesible to your needs. I think it is an unfair and biased opinon to say this game forces coop and grinding and feel that comes from frustration from accessibility, because like you said, a lot of friends say the game is fun and between consumer reviews and profressional critics, the game scoring great and being well recieved by most. It's fine to hate a game for many reasons, but to extend your opinion with a heated bias like "forces coop and grinding so expect microtransactions in the future" seems unreasonable.

I want to explore, but I usually get punished with a one hit death, so that's not fun. I'm also not a fan of games that steal your experience. If you don't like the difficulty boo hoo then stop playing, there are more than enough people who love the difficulty of the game that will keep it alive. I think the beauty of souls is finding that easy mode for ourselves. Carving out a path through a genuinely hostile world and mastering our own unique playstyles is damn rewarding. Elden ring is a masterpiece because it is accessible, but difficult. No from soft game has ever given players so many options for exploration, and the player must utilize exploration to beat margit. In my opinion margit is the best “first” boss we have ever had, because he strongly encourages the exploration that made dark souls 1 so memorable. But he still smashed me into oblivion and I loved every second.

I personally don’t like how accessible elden ring is. I fear that they’ll listen to much to the community. They even decreased a bosses health because the people who were bad at the game complained to much about it. They worked half a decade to make a game just for people to be nit picky because they’re trash at the game. I’m glad that theyre nerfing certain weapons that make pvp unbalanced. People will complain about the nerfs because they can’t figure out things themselves instead they listen to everyone else on how to play and make a build or what to use instead of progressing on their own terms. Alot bosses in previous games were literal roadblocks where you couldn't really do much else until you kill them. And unlike watching people playing other games, I was free to do that, instead of: die to boss-run back-die to boss-run back, etc. just to progress the game. With Elden Ring, boss too tough? Get stronger, come back later.

11:37 Yes, exactly. My first day (6hrs) playing I had a terrible experience. Never knew how to level up (had ~30 sites of grace, but never specifically rested at the one by the bridge giant after unlocking the church grace). Never figured out how to use weapon skills because it kept using my shield skill (the controls to dual wield are not in the tutorial or in the controls, only in the loading screen tips). The first chest I ever opened teleported me to Caelid mines where I lost all my runes (since I couldnt level up) to the bull boss (thought the giant gate was an exit, since all prior bosses had the smoke barrier). And obviously I was traveling this massive map on foot because I was never given a horse. The next day I started a new character and made the decision that this game was not designed to be played without Googling basic mechanics. From then on I had a blast all the way to the end (just finished today).

The game tries to teach you at the very beginning that it wants you to explore and not feel beholden to taking a linear path. The tree sentinel 100 yards from where you spawn at is the first lesson. Chances are you got your ass kicked by him and had to leave and come back after getting a few levels. I totally understand that with games like this, sometimes people prefer having a set boss order and path you need to follow. I mean when I first started playing, it was pretty overwhelming and I actually looked online to see if anyone had published a sort of "standardized boss order" just so I had some idea of where I should go and when. I was playing on day 1 so no one really had that info out yet, but I managed just fine on my own and I'm glad I did.

I agree with 95% what he said but I have to half disagree with the whole “filter” part. Is is a word used by egotists? Yes. There definitely exists people who wants to feel superior by belittle players, who are struggling and reaching a point of frustration, further by saying something like “lol you just got filtered bro” etc. However I think it’s false to state that devs put in these difficult enemies or bosses to actively “filter” their customers. I believe that any sort of bump along the way of a game is for the devs to encourage the player to learn something different. I sucked so much at games that I actually had trouble with bokoblins in BotW hard mode. I didn’t expect them to be this beefy, regen, or pose a very high risk as a mob. So what do I do? I simply leave them alone and learned along the way to use all the tools and tricks in the bag without having to bash my head against them repeatedly. Same with Margrit for me. Granted this is on a different scale but once I realize that I have no knowledge or the tools to take him on I just opted to leave. I mean it’s not like the game was actively trying to railroad me into fighting him either, no? You had almost full exploration of the world without even beating him. So yeah, I just don’t think Margrit was just there to purposely discourage players into quitting. Also on the side note I don’t think it’s just soulsborne players who have this railroad mentality. I believe it’s the majority of gamers these days. Games lately have been so linear that people automatically expect the game to go step by step to be like the instructions of a manual. So when a game encourages you to try things differently people just assume that it is done out of some malicious intent against the player. And it’s a shame because it just allows the bad actors to run with that false narrative to create a rift between players, and between players and the game it self.

From the footage I’ve seen, I think he actually was pretty good at rolling and dodging attacks, so to speak, good at the game. I think the reason why is because he was very under-levelled and under-equipped, and at that level, you need to really memorise every move including patterns in the boss’ behaviour, which will inevitably take a long time since you can’t afford to make many mistakes at all… I haven’t seen him say that the game was bad anywhere as well.

In Elden Ring the 1st main story boss is not the actual easy learning tutorial/beginner learning boss. It's the Cave in the 1st area with the Beastman of Ferrum Azzula. Your literally as a brand new player supposed to get the horse then explore & find some gear/dungeons to practice & learn fighting tactics. If your having difficulty in a dungeon take a break/area explore, practice against specific enemies more, & slowly gain runes People take the game too seriously or intentionally make it harder for themselves whether accidentally or intentionally/subconsciously. Just have fun, nobody is forcing you to do anything... who cares if you take months to beat the game. Its your story & adventure do it your way.

He is hard in the sense he has a varied move set, but he isn't a first boss, there are a dozen bosses, hell, I stumbled onto the dragon early, and triggered the trap early, fighting my way thru a higher level area, fighting enemies and bosses, getting stuff. My exploration was rewarded, my inquisition was rewarded, even my multitude of deaths were rewarded by learning move sets of dragons early on. When I came back after 20 hours of exploring and being wowed by the world, I found him, kicked his ass, and did the same for the rest of the area. The best tip I could give anyone playing this is that when your told to go to stormveil go there and fight margit to gauge his strength, then go explore the starting region you are in and gather your strength until you feel like your confident in your ability to get past him comfortably because Godfrey will stomp you if you are stagnant with your growth. There are 20 bosses you can face before you even get to stormveil Castle so you should find them and do them first.

Being able to explore the open world is a genius way to let new players and casuals to build their characters to a point where they can take the main bosses on. The biggest game design flaw is that they sit there and tell you to go to bosses you have no chance of beating. There's no series of bosses that get harder over time that lead up to the important bosses. Instead of the general formula which would still be completely usable in the open world they threw it all away and made a wander fest that a ton of people don't like.

@@nathantower5565 What are you talking about dude? You're making it sound like the game gets in your face and says "GO FIGHT THE MAIN BOSS YOU COWARD DO IT NOW RIGHT AT THE BEGINNING" the game gives you an almost missable way of telling you where to go if you want to take on the main bosses. Key word being *if* you want to. The game has tons of bosses littered around that vary in difficulty and you can tell how difficult a boss will be based on the mobs surrounding it. It's not some mystery to figure out how bosses work. Can you fight all the mobs leading up to a boss relatively easily with little to no health loss? Then you're gonna be able to handle the boss. Is there some grinding if you want to be able to fight bosses properly and take them on without getting your shit pushed in on 2 seconds? Yea, but the other games had that too. But you can easily wipe the first 3 or so side bosses you can encounter with starting gear and skills, (aside from Tree Sentinel) if you have the gameplay down. As for the "wander fest a ton of people don't like" I have hardly seen anyone complain about the open world aspect, considering you can't move 5 feet in any direction a majority of the time without bumping into enemies. Sure sometimes there are areas where there isn't a whole lot going on but I guarantee if they did what you wanted and placed enemies every few feet like the og games, people would hate it far more than you're claiming cuz it would be totally unfair and a slog.

These "difficulty slider" things in ER aren't a genius because the easy mode doesn't make a certain gameplay style easier to execute or more forgiving, instead it forces people to apply a different style that might be unfit and unfun for them and circumvents the challenges of the fights entirely, rather than helping you overcome them. Do you beat the fight standing there and spamming magic, barely interacting with the melee combat system? Yes. But is that fun for a melee build? To me, no.

These games including Elden Ring are actually very smart with how it shows the player what is feasible without forcing it on them. when exploring Limgrave you find enemies and materials that suite your level and as you move to other areas enemies become increasingly more challenging along with the rewards becoming bigger. if you go farther east and hit an enemy and barely do any damage and get alot of runes then thats a clear sign as a player that this place out of your league but it also doesn't force you to leave or block its location. this allows for player freedom while creating a natural course of progression. Having trouble with Margit? its not a filter its just a natural point to show what is waiting for you past that point in the castle. if you're barely doing damage then your weapon might need to be upgraded and you can also get more levels by fighting dungeon bosses. still need some help? well then there is always summons and co-op.

Having a boss that acts as a "casual filter" isn't something I approve of because it makes me feel better than others it's because they force you to think and act in different ways. The recurring theme of the series has been "anti-fragility;" learning from mistakes, that which does not kill you, that kind of stuff. Margit is about persuading players to explore the optional areas and grow stronger. You're telling me that souls veterans were able to adapt to Sekiro's fucking deflection mechanics and yet not figure out that you're supposed to explore the vast open world before you in order to gain power? Sorry mate I'm just not buying it. Father Gascoigne was all about getting the player to understand that this was BLOODBORNE, not Dark Souls. The same goes for Genichiro. First bosses are meant to teach you valuable game mechanics. Not only that but I've played every souls game to date and even I've found myself taking a break from the games after rage quitting; but that's okay because it's all apart of the hero's journey. Every sports film has that part where the protagonist is at their lowest point, the belly of the whale so to speak, that just makes the return and final climax all the sweeter. From knows what they're doing and I applaud their approach to tough love. if someone quits these games permanently because of their lack of adaptability then it's their loss. From shouldn't feel the need to tailor their games for mass appeal, and why should they? Not every game is going to be right for everyone. I personally have several friends who can't play these games and that's okay. I personally LOVE Skyrim, and yet it's a game a ton of people have a burning hatred for. My issue is with how hard bosses hit for how rapid they attack with these flurries of attacks you can't dodge. dodge the first hit, their next 3 hits are so fast it hits you before you even finish your first roll's animation, they you just get stun-locked to death. even 99 vigor gives you lik 2k hp, and even then it takes bosses 2 hits to leave you with 20% hp left. this would easily be rectified if they just brought back the ability to upgrade armor for more magic/physical defense. and bosses are so spongey. fighting the last boss and not only does he have a lot of HP, but he has 2 phases (so far) that brings him another full health bar. if bosses are going to hit as hard as they do, they can't also be flinging out rapid multi hit attacks that even if you dodge you get hit by follow up attacks before your dodge animation even finishes and the player can do any further input. (mainly a lot of other bosses, some bosses actually have a reasonable attack speed)

I'm 70 hours in... and I'm done... for me the most frustrating thing is not knowing where to go or what to do... there is NO indication NONE of what you should be doing.. I've got to a point were I've cleared all the areas I can manage and now everywhere u go I get 2 hit and dead... I have no idea where u should be going or should be doing and it's exhausting. Playing for 3 hours and making ZERO progress ain't fun..

I put 20 hours into the game running around, completely missed Margit until I watched another streamer beeline to him and proceed to get pounded for 2 hours. Yeah, hes slightly too brutal for a first boss, especially as an early heavy weapon build. Blocking smacks out your whole stamina bar, he can attack three times in your one swing, armor makes you take 60% hp a hit instead of 80% (still two hits!) I've had a lot of fun just picking some odd looking thing on the map and seeing what it is, running past anything that I can't kill quickly on my way. There are a lot of caves, dungeons, ruins, some weird puzzle towers, etc. And many of them have much more forgiving bosses that give you some interesting gear or magic or upgrade materials. I'll tackle Margit again when I feel like it. It's kind of like back in DS1 where you just blitzed past enemies just to get a little more info and make more progress towards the next bonfire. Or heading another direction because you realize the cave full of reanimating skeletons is too difficult after just starting the game.

Margit is fucking horrible, I played bloodbourne and ds1 and barely died on any bosses, except for blood starved beast and the 1st hunter. This guy had me completely beatdown for a while but then I explored got other stuff, and beat him 3rd try, I used spirit summon and a bleed weapon, but otherwise I wouldnt have the damage since the window to dps is really short.

Blocking is definitely viable against Margit, but just like in every souls game it's nowhere near necessary. Just dodge and punish until he dies, he's decently hard but still very manageable even with a +0 weapon.

Can someone pls genuinely answer my question? I’m lvl 150 with a pretty good bleed build. Why is that whenever I duel online with other players I just get one shot every single time? I beat a lot of the hard bosses and I’m not a bad player I know how to dodge and everything. But for some reason every hit I make gives players like .01 damage and I always get 1 hit ko’d. Are people cheating or are they just mostly like lvl 250 and up? I’m confused and feel like I’m wasting my time. I never have fun dueling because I can’t even last 1 second in a fight. It feels a bit unfair and no fun at all.

I disagree true ego is when people choose to hate the game just because they don't want to put effort into it. Call of duty doesn't have a filter loook what happened to it, assassin's creed doesn't have a filter and I fell asleep while playing it. Not having filters u risk the game becoming lame, it's better to target a specific audience, and open a pathway for casuals to get gud at the game. Summons in Elden Ring easy mode

i wasn’t even looking for margit until i decided to actually progress the game. i’m mostly shocked that people somehow managed to tunnel vision so hard that they didn’t even think of exploring the massive world all around them. there are ruins and shit every 5 steps, it’s so weird to me.

@@Highs009 yea im used to different open world games but never played souls before. i dont mind the difficulty but in that difficulty the game should at the very least teach you how to play the game. thats just a staple in any kind of game design. for example in sekiro they showed u how to traverse through the game by the time you reached the final boss you literally knew how to use the different skills and parrying etc etc to fight the boss. u were prepared. this game doesnt even do the bare minimum. just drops you in the middle of the map and tells you to do the main story quest. like thats just plain and simple poor game design. no other way about it

I’ve never played a dark souls game in my life. Elden ring was the first for me. The world gives you the tools to utilize and get better. If you can’t do something, level up. Go back and try. Once I grasped how the game works it became a lot more easier to play. Taking the time to explore, explore caves, get smithing stones, upgrade your weapons. Upgrading and leveling up is a big deal. I love the game. The learning curve was there. But once you get it, it’s a whole different kind of game and very enjoyable.
