Why Paul Reubens Chose Tim Burton to direct "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure"

Ойын-сауық

During his New York Comic Con 2019 panel, Paul Reubens told the story about why he chose Tim Burton to direct "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure" (in a very long roundabout story with a lot of tangents that only Paul Reubens could tell in an entertaining way).

You mean early 90s. The adult movie theatre incident happened in 91. But I completely agree with you… there was no internet porn back then, it was either magazine, VHS tape, or adult theatre! He didn’t deserve to have his career ruined for it. I was 8 years old when that happened, the biggest Pee Wee fan, and I remember being so confused by that incident. They made it seem like he was a pervert / sex offender just because they caught him in an adult theatre and because he happened to have a children’s tv show on the air at the same time. I’m so happy he was able to make a comeback, if anyone deserved it, it was Paul Reubens.

Had to come back to this after hearing about this great man's passing. I remember gaining a lot of respect for Tim Burton after hearing that he cast Mr. Ruebens for the part of Oswald's father in BATMAN RETURNS. So sad to realize that during this time Paul was suffering from cancer and that he has passed away from it. But we can be grateful for the kindness Paul showed in not revealing his illness to us so we could just enjoy seeing and hearing him instead of also being sad because of knowing what he was going through. Of course, it is not wrong for a celebrity to reveal that he/she has an illness. That is something each one has to decide for themselves. There is no right or wrong to it and no reason for hurt or anger because they did not reveal their medical condition. Paul/Pee Wee, we love you, you are terribly missed. You will live in our memory and our hearts.

I'd say it's still Burton's BEST film. It was the perfect marriage of his very stylized cartoony sensibilities and art direction with the ideal subject matter: Paul Reuben's highly stylized 1950s retro sensibilities and Pee-wee character. Toss in the groundbreaking Danny Elfman score, and they all collaborated to create a one-of-a-kind original comedy masterpiece.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Why did the execs in Paul's story act as if Burton were such a big shot at the time? From the way Paul tells it you'd think they were talking about Scorsese or something, but he really hadn't done any major projects until Paul's movie. Not to take away from TB's incredible career accomplishments since then but, during the time period that Paul is describing, Burton had only done a few shorts and a kind of surreal version of Hansel and Gretel for TV.

Years back.... I think I was still in high school (graduated in '89), and I grew up doing live community theater. Was in many productions, such as musicals, straight plays, etc. And one of our fellow thespians, her nephew worked for Paul Reubens agent in LA as the secretary. She knew what a huge Pee Wee fan I was, so she asked her nephew if he could get me a personally autographed photo from Paul for me. I still have it to this day & really cherish it more after his passing. ❤

Call it a goofy comedy, but it was a masterpiece in all elements of film making. I'm ashamed to say, but I either didn't know Tim Burton directed, or I forgot. Either way, I don't think anyone else could have done it and made it the epic movie it was.

Beautiful story! Pee Wee's Big Adventure was such an awesome part of mine and my brothers and cousins' childhoods. My grandma had it on VHS and it made the rounds through the extended family and we were always quoting it. I think what's great about classic movies like that is that they DO have that kind of style and attention to detail that's head and shoulders above the norm. And for those of us that find ourselves attracted to the arts, whether drawing, painting, writing, film, acting, music, etc., having influences like that at a young age really opens you up to the possibilities. I totally remember that scene he talked about where Large Marge drives away and reveals the dinosaurs on the other side of the truck. Such a cool transition and it def made an impression on me as a kid.
