Why our Leopard 50 spun out of control, mid Atlantic.

We diagnose why our Leopard 50 spun around out of control during our Atlantic crossing. Just one of the many fails that we experienced during our Atlantic crossing. We handle major navigation equipment, mast and rigging failure. These are issues that you can experience on a Leopard 42 & Leopard 45 as well. In fact, potentially they could happen on a Lagoon catamaran or a Bali catamaran or any yacht. So, if you are planning to go to an upcoming boat show… Especially to see a Leopard catamaran, remember to speak to your yacht broker because most of these are known issues, so we hope this can help you avoid drama and disaster during your ocean crossing.

If you haven't been following Travel Sketch, I suggest you reach out to them or watch some of their videos. They have had the same problems as you are experiencing but they have found the problem. Its all got to do with wiring damage in the mast. They have been on the hard in Trinidad for over a year with a multitude of issues on their Leopard and their warranty claims are being very poorly handled. From the time of sea trials in Cape Town and taking possession of their Leopard, they have had endless problems caused by either poor workmanship and or by design flaws. DO not by a Leopard.

At 20:00 you're believing the plastic conduit was drilled intentionally. I don't think that is the case. It is more likely that It has been ground down by repeatedly rubbing against the mandrel heads of the rivets protruding inside the mast.

The conduit in the middle of the mast was probably for the sharp steps where the mast halves slide over the joining piece. The conduit has released from it's rivets to that joining piece, and then ground itself against those rivets. Basically wasn't riveted properly.

Yeah so I have hundreds of hours of motoring on my engines, devaluing them, because my Raymarine system totally shat out on the way up from Cape Town to Gibraltar due to incompetent installation and similar mast issues. What have I got for that particular wear and tear so far? Nothing. Absolute credit to Raymarine for helping fix it all for free with some self help in Gibraltar. The factory hasn't sent me a cent for my prematurely worn engines. Travelopia the broker has committed to help fix my issues but that's back to what I paid for isn't it. Who pays for the unnecessary wear and tear and loss of time? Where is the shipbuilder Robertson and Caine in all this with guarantees of QC improvement and oversight?

@@liongod1000 it’s heartbreaking. Most people don’t have this kind of spare cash to buy a boat, and have to save, sell everything, and do what they can to make a dream a reality. At 16:30. I believe the initial conduit is to prevent chafing around the riveted part of the mast. It’s a bit on the cheap side but it also reduces a bit to the top side weight. Another advantage is that’s easier to pull out or insert new cables. Anyways, it’s a bit of an interesting mast layout and something that needs fixing. Your instrument issues are usually due to cable or connection or corrosion issues, seldom the instruments. The power to the N2K bus could also not be balanced or not enough. The instruments could be incorrectly programmed. If it’s NMEA183, the multiplexer could be incorrectly programmed or the 183 string could have been incorrectly assigned. Buying a new boat is a risk, I’ve been there… now I have a 50’ 2nd hand true blue water semi performance cat. I’ve learned to handle and repair most issues myself not relying on so called professionals. Could not be happier and more autonomous. Still learning after 30 years of cruising.

Im a ship repairman on mercant marine vessels and resently i started to look at videos " ship problems" Mast manifacturers are they crazy? Cable ladders is the right way and secured every 50 cm all the way. The cables itself is heavy. And secure navigation and safety is a certified class. Im amazed that comission on delivery passes simple construction logy. As for the top metal with 3 connectorsholes it should outdimensioned the area of load with many times. Fx 20mm steel. Or a realease function if too much. Also all the rope blockwheels have too small diameter..the ropes will worn quicker if the breake angle is to little. A bigger wheel is much better for the load. I have.seen this all over. Butt then again they call it " blue water sailors" do the manufactures think the oceans is a "duck dam". Like you'r video because you show the bad side of somthing that supposed to be safe from the beginning. :) we have other problems in the merchant that made my hair grey...fx quality on heavy fuel...
