Why Oscar Piastri’s Driving Style Chews Up His Tires!

Why Oscar Piastri’s Driving Style Chews Up His Tires!
Oscar Piastri has been super competitive since his arrival in 2023, but one problem has persisted: his issue with tire wear during races. Oscar has shown insane pace but always ends up overdriving due to his style, and his tires end up paying for it. This is an in-depth look at why his driving style is currently a problem but can be solved in 2024.

Piastri suffers from the same problem Leclerc did in 2019. He drives very aggressively and it destroys the tires after very few laps. I think that it will come by experience.

Totally agree, I saw signs of poor tire management from the beginning of his F1 career but as PREMA have stated, Oscar is one of the most adaptable drivers they've seen and I have no doubt that he will get to grips towards the latter half of the season. On that note, I suggest making a video about why PREMA aren't dominating F2 atm and your thoughts on Antonelli and Bearman.

Tyre management is one of those things that you can be just gifted with, but more often than not it comes with experience e.g Alonso, Hamilton etc.

Even Adrea Stella said his tyre management has improved greatly over a season. The only way to really improve is to race, you've got to think Lando, Charles, George etc are all in their 5th and 6th years, this is Oscars 2nd and his pace is already on par, if not exceeding them. Piastri is mature for his age and more aggressive than Norris. I believe that he has more innate potential and talent than Norris as well. Piastri is like a rough diamond and if given the opportunity will develop into a great driver. Piastri actually reminds me of the German driver, Stefan Bellof. Piastri will dice with Max for instance, but Norris is sheepish and intimidated of the Dutchman.

Once the race starts then no one (media) talks about him because he slips down the grid, like last years Haas team making a mad dash to the rear as soon as the race starts. When Oscar get a handle on this he's going to be fierce. Good stuff...thanks!

Driving “straight” doesn’t mean “smooth”, it means taking more of a V shape approach to corners, where you spend more time going in a straight line and getting the car rotated more aggressively in a shorter time. Max and Charles drive this way too

It's not necessarily a v shape...but yeah straighting out, or leveling out the car with a quick rotation so you can get on the throttle without having to fight the car to the exit. That's why (to me at least ) it's kinda weird that Oscar would have more deg actually. Cause when executed correctly it should cause less strain on the tire.. maybe the deg happens on entry and rotation...cause on exit it should deg less

Excellent point. In fact following any other driver is bad news for deg, so the obvious conclusion would be that he needs to be more consistent with his qualifying so that he can spend more time at the front of the race, or at least in some space as the front of the field stretches out a bit. There’s also his lack of F1 experience at play, but I think you may have rather cleverly hit upon a big chunk of the problem.

His tyre management has improved alot but more to improve which is normal, Stella TP confirms this. Bahrain a high deg/abrasive track he did fine, lapped only half a tenth slower in race, then Australia another tyre management race although 12s behind would've been only less than 6s if he didn't make that single mistake off track. Suzuka given he was 6 tenths slower there last year in the race, you can't expect him to suddenly be on pace 11 races later at that track in similar conditions. He certainly was much faster this race in comparison(even stella confirms this), more like over 2 tenths slower which is alot better in comparison to 11 races at that track. The gap(18s) at the end was exaggerated by being stuck behind Alonso for most of the race(need a significant delta to pass around suzuka if on same age tyres) and the dirty air exacerbating tyre deg(yeah his fault due to underperformance in quali). btw Leclerc had some struggles in tyre deg in his 2nd year, who remembers the 2019 Hungarian gp, he struggled quite abit compared to his experienced teammate in Vettel.

Piastri also has some Sargent issues. He doesn’t seem to know just how the car gets upset when going over curbs. Sargent just seems to always hit them in a way when you see the wreck following, you say, of course he wrecked. Look how he approached and ran over the curb. You need to upset the car over a curb in a line that chucks it the way it helps. George has this problem as well. Just like Max seems to know exactly what will happen and seems to always correct it perfectly.

He is no rookie now especially with seasons of 22 races last year. Lando is one of the toughest team mates for any driver. Its not just how fast Lando is but his tyre managemnet and consistency of driving. He rarely makes mistakes. Lets see how Oscar develops but the worrying fact that has been picked up is that he has started 2024 like 2023 and has not prgressed as much as people hoped. I am sure he will beat Lando on occasion as that is the nature of F1 but not consistenlty and Lando has consolidated his position.

Oscar has adapted to the McLaren but needs to care for his tyres just a little bit more and maybe adopt more Prostness, I prefer aggressive drivers myself! I do believe the McLaren is built around Lando's driving style, and Lando will always have that edge over him until changes are made. Oscar is young, but lets face it the average F1 WDC winner wins a title by their 4th season and by their 10th season if they have not won a title their chances of winning a title drops significantly. Jenson, Andretti (forgot the name of the 3rd driver) won their titles in their 10th-12th season. So all F1 drivers need to crack on 4-10 years passes quickly to make sure they aren't just seat fillers.

It's really hard to understand what's the reason for that, cause everytime i watch an onboard from Oscar, he looks very very smooth on the wheel. It might be a certain way that he sets up the car for himself that costs him tyre wear. Perhaps Lando is more comfortable with running the car with a bit more understeer in the race to protect the rears? But again Oscar's very smooth and his driving hides the oversteer of the car. It could also be that Lando adapts better to the situations where his tyres have gone off. I know for a fact that Leclerc is always faster with dead rear tyres than others with dead rears. Remember Monza last year. Sainz had better traction suggesting he had a bit more rear tyre, but Charles was just faster with dead tyres than Carlos with almost dead tyres.

Piastri's outstanding ability compared to his competitors of his rookie F3 and rookie F2 championships, was his ability of being kinder on his tires, wearing them out a lot less, so they are fresher towards the end of a stint. But F1 is F1. And the McLaren car is not one of the better ones. Quite a few drivers Mclaren have had driving for them recently having poor results. So clearly its the nature of the car design thats "chewing up" tires.

He had a chance to go to Redbull and turned it down. He probably had a chance to go to Ferrari as well before they went for Hamilton. I think Lando knows deep down he isn't good enough to win a title and thats why he stayed. I think Piastri should buyout his contract and go to Redbull if Max leaves. His other option would be Aston if Stroll is finally moved on. Piastri and Alonso would be a great combo and they seem to really get along. I feel Piastri doesn't gel with Norris imo.
