Can you imagine privately battling the things Norm was while doing the final stand-up on the final show of one of his all-time heroes? Norm was one of a kind, and this not only proves how funny he is, but how strong as well

@@southsideman4891 I was just coming to say that I wouldn’t be surprised if Dave knew ahead of time… this was a gift from Dave for Norm to be the last comic, and whatever he whispered was related to the whole thing.

And the bit he did about Germany was honestly one of the all time great bits in comedy history. Just pure genius. I love that he did that bit in the final standup spot ever on Letterman. Just goes to show after all the hilarious things Norm has ever said, he was just as funny if not funnier in his oldest age as he was when he was technically “in his prime.”
Now, with Norm's passing, this interview is even more enlightening. RIP Norm.

Wow….Norm knew. I’ve got tears in my eyes after this. He knew he was on borrowed time and to be able to be the last comic on Letterman…What a roller coaster of emotions he must’ve been on. Fighting for his life while making people laugh. I’m speechless…

How fortunate we are I was born in 60 to know Norm and his comedy and how you try to explain to young kids today how it was funny and good back then and innocent and loving it was different then we had fun

Not only was Norm's last set on Letterman heartfelt, but it's one of the most well constructed 9 mins I've ever heard. He put the work in on writing, placement, & timing and it paid off for everyone. That is how you honor a legend.

Norm's jokes just hit differently. Notice how he says "I couldn't afford the shoes" and how Howard caught it a bit later. That's just how next level Norm was.

This was a moment so much bigger than any of us knew. Heartbreaking and sweet.

Howard's greatest strength has always been pulling genuine truths out of guarded people. No one does it better.
That was actually pretty dam cool how he chocked up for Letterman. Shows he's a human just like us and not just a famous comedian.
Norm's love bomb threw Dave - he forgot to emphasize the MAC in Macdonald when he thanked him.
Knowing what we know now.. It's so much more understandable.. Norm truly had the clarity to love everyone and mean it.. It's such a beautiful thing to see.. He made us laugh with his comedy but in the end he brought us to tears with his humanity..
RIP Norm one of a kind comedian, fearless.
And even during THIS interview nobody had ANY idea exactly why he was so emotional. These was his last goodbyes sort of.
This has a different tone knowing what was going on behind the scenes now. Rest in peace.

God bless him. He really loved people and felt things deeply.

Norm is right up there with Morgan Freeman with one of the greatest voices on the planet. Sean Connery is also up there!
Norm was a beautiful guy. That brought tears to my eyes.
I often watch the last appearance of Jack Hanna on Letterman. Jack cries. Very moving
nicely handled, Howard. . . I think we were all very moved by that moment .

5:48 For me I think one of the most fascinating things about the Norm/Letterman dynamic is that he didn't interact with him backstage or away from the show.
Thank you for this interview. Norm was my favorite comedian. As a fan, I am completely devastated of learning of his passing today. There are thousands of comedians but nobody delivers in such masterly detail like Norm did.
I remember seeing that last appearance and too was genuinely moved by his surprising show of emotion. Miss Norm.

Underrated? About 6 months to a year before all hell broke loose I saw Norm, Spade, and Dennis Miller together in a show. At the end they all came out for a Q&A. Every single question was for Norm. However, while at least a hundred people lined up, a quarter of them sat down after the first person asked where he got his ideas.
