It's not about the amount of G/A a player has, it's about how clinical and important those goals are. Suarez was a major UCL ghost while Vini is one of the most clinical ucl players I've ever seen. Even Messi and Ronaldo , most of those goals were just stat padding (they're still more clinical than vini)

I honestly dont think they’re putting up bad numbers, luis figo and others had similar numbers when they won their ballon d’or so its not too wrong, but the issue is that messi and ronaldo spoiled us. They made scoring 40 goals in a season look bad and 50-60 look normal. Although for the new generation I think haaland last year was good and shouldve won. For missing the world cup( Not even taking part in the most important tournament of the year), haaland was doomed to fail. Mbappé would win the ballon d'or if France won the world cup. No player in the history of football won the ballon d'or in a world cup year if he didn't take part in it despite how great his achievement in club was. At the moment the world cup final sees Messi facing Mbappé, Haaland's chances to win were zero.

Florian Wirtz, he had 40 goal/assist contributions across the whole season being leverkusens main creative and attacking outlet, didn't lose a single game he played in this season except for one, added in ending bayerns 11 title streak and helping leverkusen achieve their first bundesliga. Other than Wirtz, Bellingham and Vini are most desserving

Well, Messi and Ronaldo were undoubetdly great, but it could be seen as modern defense and modern tactics slowing down goalscoring. Nowadays, teams play much more with posession and modern defense has become very well structured which limits goals and risk-taking. Honestly, I would put Mbappe for baloondor.

And it would be wrong. In 2019 Messi had 68 g/a, 45 in 2020, 61 in 2021 and 65 in 2022, all while being past his prime. Messi tore up all 3 decades of football, irregulardless of tactical prowess, styles of football, or whatever else have you. Dont even try that narrative, these new players simply arent on their level, like at all. Mbappe is 25 and isnt close to Ronaldo on a technical level let alone messi. We need to accept that we saw the absolute peak of football and we honestly may not see anything like it again as long as we live

Defenders are constantly screwed over in Ballon d'Or conversations. It was already harsh for them to win, but now, post-Messi and Ronaldo, it has become a matter of "who scored the most?" so it will be impossible for a defender to actually win. Like, imagine if the Netherlands win the Euros: suddenly Frimpong would have had a glorious season where he only lost *one* match the whole time and won 3 trophies (with one lost final). But no one would seriously think "let's give him the Ballon d'Or".

Brazil and Germany are out of Copa America and Euros respectively. If Southgate somehow found a way to win the Euros, ( which I dont think he will ), Bellingham deserves to win the Ballon D'or. But if not, its really open. If France win it, Mbappe could be in the conversation but he has scored 1 goal ( a penalty ) the entire campaign ( Group Stage to Semi ) so unless he scored at least 4 goals in the next 2 games ( if France advance to the Final ), he won't win it. Now, somebody that has been on my mind for months now and is really underrated. I think Antony deserve the Ballon D'or for helping Man United winning the FA Cup. Without his goal against Liverpool and Wigan, Man United would go trophyless. Agree or not?

2:18 I clicked on this video thinking "I bet this video will use goal contributions as a major factor to justify the video's title". And I was right. A problem with modern football is that, nowadays, people just look at the stats and think "oh this player is better than this other due to stats". Something few people would have done so, in previous eras. When Baggio was barely winning any trophies, or Ronaldo was receiving the Ballon d'Or with only 9 goal contributions the whole year, no one was questioning how did they get considered World Class players, because it's not just "who wins more" or "who scores more". I feel like we could have a parallelism with basketball. We've got Kobe Bryant and LeBron James' careers overlapping (13 years between LeBron's debut and Kobe's retirement), and then LeBron had to compete with Steph Curry. These players have set basketball standards so high that people do feel like the sport has fallen off. Not to mention, the "poor" stats that Vinicius and Bellingham have pulled off would have made them Golden Boot contenders in pre-2010 football. Vinicius literally scores as much as Shevchenko, a top striker who even won the Ballon d'Or. Bellingham is pulling the strings in midfield for Real Madrid just like Nedved did for Juventus in 2003, a year when he won the Ballon d'Or (which retroactively became a controversial one 20 years later just because "Henry had more goal contributions that year"). Football is literally back at where it was before Ronaldo and Messi made it big, and basketball will probably take some time, but could eventually return to pre-Kobe and LeBron days (although it might be tougher since there was the Michael Jordan era before then, and before *that* there was also the Larry Bird-Magic Johnson era). Let's just try to enjoy this game

If you look at the ballon dor winner stats before the Ronaldo and Messi era, you can see that 30g/a is normal for a ballon dor winner. That’s why Messi and Ronaldo have set the standard so high up.

I mean Suarez, Neymar, Lewandowski, Benzema, Bale etc were world beaters in their primes that would be considered the best player in today’s game. The level has dropped off slightly
