Sephiroth is a good counter to other swordies. It basically like playing rock, paper, scissors, but your opponent choise scissors and you choose bigger scissors.

Yeah, that's unironically how things go: Swordies beat rushdown, rushdown beat zoners and zoners beat swordies. There's some extra nuisanse here and there but Sephiroth is the swordie who walled out the swordies.

For me at least Sephiroth's greatest flaw that would make him good but not broken in high level is his weight. He just dies too early. He really needs like 10 units of weight. This way, his wing has more time out which actually makes him more dangerous without having to change his moveset at all. I see Sephiroth die BEFORE his wing can come out or right when he is dying.

Honestly, 79 units is kind of the cursed weight number. 3 out of 5 characters with that value struggle a lot because of their poor weight. Sephiroth and Mewtwo are too big for their own good, and Kirby has literally nothing to justify that low a weight other than lore. At least Pikachu and Olimar weigh it up.

As a Zelda player, if I'm hitting Sephiroth with Lightning Kicks at around 60% it usually means Sephrioth gets the lovely privilege of acquiring One Wing right as he hits the blast zone. And I think that is *far* too extreme of a weakness for someone like Sephiroth.

I could see the argument that he is the best DLC character, but honestly I think Joker, Bayonetta and Steve were all better inclusion to their games (even tho they all turned out to be bonkers broken). Sephiroth was indeed a hype reveal, but I think people are overexaggerating how cool of an inclusion he was just because his trailer was awesome.

The "Final Boss" design logic is insane. Sephiroth can seem impossible to fight sometimes, but learn his weaknesses and his attacks' blind spots and he's done for.

I think Nairo summed it up perfectly: he doesn’t have the fast and active hitboxes you’d want from a sword since there’s all the spacings on his moves

Defensive glass cannon is so accurate

I really like how Sephiroth is designed, from an opponent perspective. He truly feels like a "final boss" considering his power while outspacing you and how you can throw that back at him once you get upclose. Even wing can enhance that sensation if you consider it a "2nd phase".

Something you haven't talked about and I think might be relevant is that he also suffers the same problem as Marth, in which if you don't land the sweetspot of his moves he's gonna have troubles killing. And being light + having trouble to kill is usually not great.

@@smilingman4299 comparing tippers is extremely surface-level and doesn’t need to be said in one of his videos and doesn’t require deep analysis. If you play the game you know how tippers/sweet-spots work

The accuracy and spacing style of sephiroth is what I love about maining him, he lives as a glass cannon and its super rewarding and punishing. His reward for keeping people out and learning how to box and space properly with him feels so satisfying. I know he feels niche and not for everyone but for people that love him it feels like the right fit.

As a Sephiroth main, his biggest flaw is being too light. It can be hard to finish stocks at high level and his low weight makes it super hard for any Sephiroth player to make effective use of One-Wing.

@@Charles-mv7sv If there is one thing that makes Sephiroth stand out is the fact that he along with Cloud, mega man, and Joker have sliding a down tilt, which is a a good out of shield option. Sephiroth is kinda like Mega man in that he has great spacing but not great close combat, so he needs to be patient.

​@@orangeslash1667 Seph dtilt is a frame 9 move, and added to shield drop frames, it will only come out frame 20 oos. That's not a good oos option. Most moves that hit a shield at high/top level aren't -20 on shield. Contrast with Cloud's frame 7 up-b, MM frame 4 bair, Joker frame 7 fair/bair - these are options with much better speed and coverage than anything Seph has access to

@@vezwyxx Oh, I guess the only option is to escape. Speaking of which, if there is one thing that Sephiroth does better than Cloud it's recovery. Cloud is very easy to gimp due to his linear recovery. Edge guarding Sephiroth is much harder, especially with one wing.

I love Sephiroth. I am not good at him, but I find him fun purely by how dramatic he comes off as. Also that full charged blast is great.

Sephiroth's problem in a way remind me of old Aurelion Sol: A very strong character with crazy damage output who at first glance looks op but is held back by being unable to compete with a metagame mainly consisting of characters who are specified to get in your face as fast as possible due to a melee dead zone.

The biggest flaw with asol was making him both ranged and a control mage. With those orbitals a melee bruiser or tank would have made more sense. He was just so squishy and defenders without ult vs anyone with a dash that rylais was mandatory lmao.

@@decidueyezealot8611 While I agree with the statement, that Center of the universe would have been stronger on a melee champ with more hp, this ability would be soo broken without the melee deadzone. The point is, that center of the universe was flawed by design due to it being a very strong ability that was only really held back by the one weakness that made old Asol so unattractive to play. The core problem of both characters, a melee dead zone, in a meta dominated by characters, who are designed to get close to you as fast as possible is the same; that’s what I pointed out. You could even go farther with this analogy. For example is Sephiroth suffering from being very light and therefore easy to kill, once you get into his deadzone, which is exactly what you pointed out about Asol.

Sure, but for old A-Sol u also only got the max. damage out if you had near perfect spacing and while the sour spot is definitely a big problem, but there are worse out there. I have seen people hit almost only sweet spots and under this assumption, Sephiroths damage IS crazy. Sure he might not get it off all the time but that's the glass cannon aspect i was talking about @@-Pridebycreatons-

I think the thing about Sephiroth is his pressure and it’s completely up to the player to read their opponent. Shadow flare really pressures your opponent, down smash is good for shield breaks, up smash covers characters who tend to jump a lot and land with aerials, and reading air dodges with octo slash can really mess with the mental state of the opponent.

It’s just at higher levels of play you’ll find the opponent usually has to make sephiroth come to them and be the one working hard unless he gets the lead, so it’s not usually going to be Seph doing the conditioning and pressuring, and his moves are precise and specific that most of the best characters have simple strategies to bypass his moves

Yup, he's supposed to be a god genius whatever in the game, so it makes sense that his kit requires you to be smarter than your opponents

while it’s true that his weaknesses are extremely bad, it’s impressive that despite those weaknesses he’s still a high tier character. goes to show that some of his fundamental attributes are obviously very strong, albeit you need to really understand his range and timing or you’re gonna get rekt

2:57 This line about Sephiroth being unorthodox by platform fighter standards is a bit ironic when his design closely follows how ranged characters are approached in traditional fighting games. You will basically never see a long range fighter who is tanky (heavy) or has good "get off me" tools outside of Smash and some of the games like it.

As a Sephiroth Main he's still a really fun character even if no one uses him but at least FINAL FANTASY 7 finally got the representation it deserved more songs another stage spirits and FINAL FANTASY 7 Mii Costumes Sephiroth is also the reason why I even got into smash bros in the first place if he hadn't got in I probably wouldn't be playing this game he also requires a lot of patience and skill smash players are a bit to impatient and don't have a lot of skill with him I'm also glad Sephiroth finally won a Major

I have noticed that the wing activating has saved me, I won’t have wing yet but the blast zone will do a single bit of damage, activating my wing, and halting my movement (or at least slowing it) after being hit at high percents

I will forever main sephiroth no matter what. He's not bad, he's not great, he's just that perfect (heh) sweetspot of "I can kick my friend's asses and not feel like I paid 5.99 for a ticket to grand finals"

As a Sephiroth main, I don't know if it's a lack of representation but rather just a lack of results. We have 3 or so top representatives being Tweek, Ken, and Ned. Ned being the only one who solo mains him I believe. The only time I think a solo Sephiroth has won a major when was he first released and Zackray played him. Besides that he's like Captain Falcon it's not that people don't play him, it's just that he isn't someone who is very viable competitively if you solo main compared to say Steve or Joker.

Good video. I’ve been a Sephiroth fan since his first game. I main him and love it. Most of the points given here are spot on. He does have one good out of shield weapon if people are jumping in deep on his shield. That’s foot stool dair out of shield. It’s a shame that the top players that use him haven’t mastered this tech though. That makes it completely understandable why VARs III didn’t mention the tech.

As a former Sephiroth main myself using him day 1 here’s how I would balance him with out over killing it 1. I would have him a bigger nair just so that his out of shield isn’t as bad as well as making it two frames faster and adding a bit of weight around 2ish more

There are characters that are far more overwhelming than Sephiroth who deserve to be lighter than he is, it's so strange. Min-Min, Sonic, and Cloud are way more overwhelming than Sephiroth even on his best days and yet they are defensively way more powerful than he will ever be.

Sephiroth is perfect for doubles battles, and is GREAT at pressuring an opponent that isn't good at getting off the back foot. If he starts dominating, it can be very hard for a lot of people to take back the aggro.

Having super armor on one wing absolutely changes him that and an extra jump for survivability is a comeback mechanic. It's just hard midnset when fighting Rushdown to be committed to just super armoring through them and hitting with moves that if whiff you're toast. But that's sort of the point of a comeback mechanic.

Finally thank you vars, I've been waiting for this! As a sephiroth main I hope he gets some more support from other players

do you intend to cover all characters? I'd like to see one episode on a character really NOBODY plays, like Duck Hunt, for example

2 important things I didn't see you talk about but you did make amazing points. 1. His counter doesn't need anything to hit it for it to do damage and sometimes does better for a shield since he has no good shield counter. Although it too leaves you wide open in every other direction. 2. His N smash when properly timed is a great edgeguard tool. At maximum charge for slow recovery like kirby has so many frames, although short range, that shielding it is death and it can't be I-framed with the edge or dodges with it's massive area. The charge time and distance make it an issue though for characters with blinks. I have a tough time with Zelda since she can blink past the edge right on me, block range with her soldier, or deflect any range making a hilarious self inflicted out.

Sephiroth is my son. Do not talk to us again or I will Supernova your house.

I feel like this episode of "why no one plays this character" feels more like a "why doesn't everyone play this character" for Sephiroth considering him having top player who play him like Tweek, Ken, and Ned but it's the playerbase sizes that determine who is featured on the next "why no one plays" episode. What it might come down to for the characters with average sized playerbases like Mario, or Fox, even Samus

Sephiroth isn’t a barely used character. He is 14th place in results and has a usage rate of around 2% to 2.5%

Wait, wasn't he only 20-21th place? I guess the video is not very accurate period because it has been rising lately; is a high tier with representation akin to most high tiers like Mario, Sonic, Ness or Lucina. It doesn't see more play because he is not busted, just solid, and is best used as counterpick or main with pocket secondary, not a solo main like all-rounders or Steve.

Yeah, these videos seem to analyse weak parts of a character rather than actually underused characters. I guess saying “little mac has zero tools outside of ground game” is a lot less interesting than analysing a character like Seph that isn’t underused but is definitely held back

@@N12015 Those characters are definitely top tier. Kurama, Sonix, and Protobanhan get consistently good results with these characters. Just because a character has few reps, doesn’t mean they aren’t as good.

one Winged Angel additions: 20% Knockback and Damage Resistance his Jab is turned into a forward stab from his handle, then a Kick, then the Masume Slash.(comes out quicker) neutral Air's Coverage is increased and he realses a fiery dark energy. Masume is inflamed granting his Stab attacks additional Coverage and dealing additonal damage. when Up Special is just pressed sephiroth Slashes upward, then slashes upside while he's held in place.( in the air it keeps him floating and he gains one jump)

I'm surprised you haven't done a video on why no one plays Marth yet. I mean, it's pretty obvious why no one plays Marth, but it's also obvious why no one plays Ganondorf, yet he has a video talking about him.

Sephiroth is probably my favorite character in smash, he's just a well designed character, hes powerful but frail , and much like a boss can take you in just a couple of hits, but if you know how to avoid them he leaves big openings that allow you to kill him early

Looks and Feels like a super Heavy Weight. Slow Startup, long Range, mediocre Combos, Defensive Utility (Counter, Hyper Armor, Priority) got balanced around beeing at a weight of 79. Wich is litterally the same weight as Pikachu. And he feels like Link and Min Min (both of 104)

Glad you hit on the meta characters Sephiroth does well vs. For a long time now I've been theorizing the best secondaries for Ridley in the current meta, and it seems like Sephiroth is a strong candidate for the role. Might be that Sephiroth ends up being the ideal secondary for a lot of low tiers actually.

I would really enjoy a “Why no one plays Link” episode. From what I’ve seen, he is a very uncommon character despite having some very good attributes. I’d like to hear your thoughts on why he’s as underused as he is.

@@aneasteregg8171 It's confirmed that Amogus was inspired by (The Thing). That's the problem when I think of Sci-fi Horror in Video games, I think of Metroid. So Amogus wouldn't standout compared to Ridley.

Another great video, really appreciate the time into editing all the clips of training mode and matches to give the script some real life - so easy to follow and just super enjoyable. But man your mic is terrible, the audio pops waaay to much, your try turning down the volume but that makes your voice barely audible. Your videos are still worth going through ear hell tho

i do agree with most of the video and like the analogy of "defensive glass cannon", I'm surprised you didn't mention Sephiroth's other out-of-shield option, footsool into dair. Its not the best by any means, situational even, but its much appreciated when you dont have option for anything else while also being a kill move.

Tbh I'd see that failing more often than succeeding, outside of exact situations your more likely to get hit trying that than actually land it.

@@decidueyezealot8611 its a knowledge check. Some landing aerials can be punished by simply holding shield, and others by parrying. But its a reliable option once you know where and when to use it. Its like how utilt is also situational with its extremely tall and skinny hitbox, but when you find those moments its clutch u.u

@@jjoshin_ Sephiroth is kinda similar to Mega man is that their spacing characters with a sliding Down tilt, Which is helpful when you need to attack Quickly. They also have an explosive Side B. The difference is that while Mega man is safer, Sephiroth is far more powerful.

I'm sure that even with all the inconveniences Sephiroth is still top 25 in terms of usage; lower than expectations but rather high because he's such a good secondary. That being said, Cloud is better overall but the video should be "Why no one SOLO MAINS" because that's the kind of character Sephiroth is, popular pocket pick, unpopular solo main.

I mean partly that's because by the time he was released the game had been out like two years, people already had mains with thousands of hours of playtime so they might dabble in the new characters but they aren't going to throw all that experience and practice with their tried-and-tested away. Even with the "busted" FP2 characters, we still see Riddles bringing out the Terry quite often, ditto Shuton still regularly using Olimar in bracket.

I don’t what that Vars is on about, a lot of people play Seph, he’s not the most played character ever but there are enough top level reps combined with solid high level reps to justify not saying “not one plays him”

Sephiroth main here. I know of all the weaknesses (believe me, I have felt them) and don't really know why I started maining him, but I'm not going to stop because there's nothing like instantly breaking a shield with down smash then killing at 0 with Gigaflare.

Ah yes, my main. Sephiroth can do some pretty stupid stuff and still win by virtue of his strength, but he is really hard to play for the reasons you mentioned😅 I think if there was one thing that could help him the most, it would be making him a mid weight, I think a lot of people can use his move set the way it is but sometimes he’ll die before getting wing. That would make my life so much easier and would make him a little more forgiving to play.

Dying before wing or immediately after getting it 😮‍💨 not to mention he doesn't really have fast moves outside of his short press up special, down air, and sliding kick. Most people just smack me mid swing if they get close lmao

@@decidueyezealot8611 Sephiroth truly is a great contrast to Cloud. Of course Cloud is safer than Sephiroth in terms of being offensive. However Cloud can easily be edge guarded if he doesn't have full charge. Sephiroth on the other hand has a less linear recovery. So as long as Sephiroth is very patient and knowing when to use neutral air, zoning, or Spacing attacks, he doesn't have to approach the opponent as much as Cloud. Meaning that Sephiroth can rival Cloud in surviving.

This video showcased Seph's general weaknesses well. I can actually use this to play better against Sephiroth players... As someone who faces a lot of them online, I can say that Sephiroth's biggest weakness is his weight. MY GOSH I can kill him soooo early with Corrin or Marth's tipper smash attacks. Sephiroth is definitely popular regardless, though. People just don't always place well with him (which is fair). What I REALLY want to see is a "Why No One Plays Corrin" video. I know why, but I want to see it regardless.

I second Sephiroth. For me, Sephiroth is at least a good character. Shadow Tag is a great move to use in neutral, disadvantage, and advantage. Good recovery. Range of course. And power. My problem with Sephiroth is that he’s too light. WHY DID THEY MAKE HIM LIGHT?!? Dying as Sephiroth is really frustrating because 99% of the time, it feels undeserved. Sephiroth just dies too soon. You’ll be playing well and all the sudden you die to Roy forward b at 80% center stage. 😑 They need to make him heavier. Also if they should change it to where Sephiroth keeps his wing until he dies.

I main Sephiroth, he's the only character I've ever mained as I'm 2 years in to Smash. EDIT - that said, I think Sephiroth is one of the most perfectly balanced characters I've ever seen in a competitive game. The handful of extremely powerful and easy-to-use options he has are near-perfectly counter-balanced by his weaknesses, and he embodies the actual origin character to a T. Sephiroth is a glass cannon where - if you have a mental advantage over your opponent - he hits like a truck and can't be punished much. But - if you don't fear him and choose to exploit his weaknesses, he completely falls apart. It's perfect design.

Sephiroth countering swordies is the Smash Bros equivalent of "and if that don't work, use more gun."

I completely agree that the one wing is not a comeback mechanic but a win more mechanic but I don't really see that as a negative overall. Just different. Great video though and I totally agree that Seph will be used more in the future.

I’m genuinely pleased that Sephiroth is just…pretty good! Not busted so people aren’t pissed about him in competitive and not awful so he’s functional in the meta. He has issues like most characters should. I think he is a perfectly good adaptation for the character in this game

I absolutely love sephiroth's playstyle though, hes like the ultimate zoner, not because he can camp you out for daus, but because you need to have god-like spacing to play him well, and when you do play him well, its soooooo fucking good EDIT: DONT LIKE I HAVE 69 COMMENTS EDIT 2: Our time has come to an end... it was fun while it lasted

People play Sephiroth, they just don’t get good results, lmao

Ever since Sephiroth got in, I've mained him by heart cause I'm a sucker for FF7. My only issue with him is he's got a lot of end lag on his special moves. I haven't been to a tournament in a while, but you'll occasionally see a Cloud VS Sephi match once & a while

i play sephiroth a lot and the issues ive found with him is yeah his up close attacks are all generally pretty weak and all his powerful attacks are super slow and take a long time to charge up, with a lot of risk. against many opponents, his long reach and spells can blast lots of distracted opponents away and he can rank up kills very quickly. in one on one fights though, especially against much faster opponents, its easy to get over whelmed when they run in and start comboing. im not the best player though, so im sure theres ways to mitigate some of his weaknesses better.

As a sephiroth main I’m glad this is finally being talked about it is tough af being a sephiroth main especially in elite

I wonder how far Leo can take seph if he mained him for awhile 😮

Between Joker, Aegis, Byleth, Marth, R.O.B and I'm maybe forgetting something; his strategy to be the very best is to be the god of neutral and be your average LoL top laner and couterpick you hard. I'm sure he would have picked Sephiroth if he didn't have Byleth or the Aegis.

@@N12015 It's funny you say that, since Leo indeed acknowledged that he would use Sephiroth if Byleth wasn't there.

Seph is a 1 to 1 copy of what he is in FF7. A boss fight. His strengths can completely put someone on lockdown. His wing hardly comes but if you don’t do it fast enough you are doomed, feels like a complete boss fight.

He might not be played much in tourney's... But, he is VERY common in low gsp quick play.. I played like 3 ina row eariler today.

They probably only put him in the game to make up for the lack of content FINAL FANTASY 7 when Cloud got in the game because he only came with 2 songs

I have been waiting for this video for a while. I have been trying to explain to people why Sephiroth is overrated, and the points in the video are what I have been trying to tell people. Another thing about him is that he can struggle to kill if he does not hit you with his sweet spots.

My 2 mains are puff and Sephiroth. There is something very cathartic about finally being the one with the sword

How to fix Sephiroth in Ultimate ? Nair frame 5 / Increase weight a bit / Keep One Wing when opponent die (like joker keeps arsene and cloud keeps limit)

Well the down air was more meant as a ledge guard spike from on stage but falling off the side is very easy

I like how the Dragonsword from Berserk looks like the Buster Sword from Final Fantasy

In the Dissidia games Sephiroth has the title of "The Peerless Blade" in lore he's all powerful but in games he's always been known as high risk, high reward and balanced. I occasionally wonder if that's why Sakurai choose to make him ⚖️ in game outside of his clearly menacing op trailer reveal.
