They have all the lights on them but it doesn't mean they are the best! Now we are going to see who is the best but they don't want that....! Simple!! It’s really crazy how people suck up to these Hawaiians. The Rothman’s will send it, no doubt, but Koa or Makua have almost zero real skill compared to real pros. I sound like a hater but skill-wise, we have kids in my local lineup that are better technical surfers than Kemper and the Rothmans. Also, their dad was pushing bricks of Yay all thru Hawaii. Why you think he did time? Oh!! What about Kala!? The hero enforcer! He preaches respect. Ohhh yeah. He has beaten up literal children and group attacked a dad in front of his 2 kids because the dad asked what the best place to boogie board was. Total tourist who just wanted to get wet, got beat down by Kala! The hero!

I would love a part 2 after the event about what you thought of the event and if any feelings changed from this video. Love the honesty

I don't watch the WSL surf events (I don't even know most of the surfers anymore on tour), but I always loved watching the Triple Crown esp Pipe Masters. Mainly because of the surfers I love watching compete here! Good on ya for speaking up Koa!

Definitely miss the old Pipe masters, that old format was what allowed people like JOB to win it over all those tour surfers.

It was different than the rest of the tour (and honestly, I feel that the tour should go to that format instead of what it runs) These contests are held across the world and the locals should have a solid representation in that contest.

Exactly. Even if it has the name “Pipe Masters” that’s not what it is. This is a special invite Stab Mag thing. The WSL Pipe contest is the closest thing to the OG Pipe Masters, but it’s missing that magic component of a local wildcard being able to make it thru and win it all. Koa being upset seems like he’s venting at Stab because they changed the format when it’s the WSL who changed everything by making Pipe first event of the season. If I’m Koa, I’d be grateful for being invited to a Stab event. Stab puts on sick events. Only other media is KZread vloggers

Very interesting to hear Koa's sober, candid and sometimes amusing real time musings on this most famous of surfing contests which has sometimes in the past not only provided the amphitheater for deciding the world surfing champion but harbored some of the most spectacular surfing moments and most remarkable upsets of seeded surfers. Understandably locals and surf fans are astounded and disappointed that it has been relegated to a "specialty" event which fails to feature some of the indisputably best Pipe exponents amongst its draw!

Props to u koa. Hope this isn’t an on going thing. Locals and the pipe legends deserve to be in this event. Scored for them late drops , getting blown out after a spit and getting a 10 for that. Not hanging on the shoulder building up speed to do a air . That’s not what pipes ever been about. Glad u spoke about it, hopeuflly it makes the other legends come out n speak about it

Koa, you are spot on, the whole WSL season format is engineered to drive corporate profit and manufacture drama rather than giving surfers a platform to perform. It used to be about putting the best surfers in the best waves. All the changes to the PM reflect this new direction and it's so sad. The world champ used to be crowned during the PM, it was the best event of the year. Such a shame. I will be cheering you on from AUS.

That’s right. It used to be the best event of the year!!!! Was a BIG deal! I felt it doesn’t have the same prestige and heart that it used to. Not the surfers, just the event.

@@zach1978 WSL is still one of the top sponsors of the event, look at the event site. Regardless of the head sponsor, it doesn't change what happened. Agreed that you don't need a sponsored contest to know who the best is. But would you rather see a bunch of air guys randomly that have barely surfed Pipecome into a mix, or see the best compete against each other? I think the answer is pretty obvious there.

Koa was subtly throwing shade at Meola and Rasta Rob because Matt said he never ever surfs pipe, and Robbie is a Floridian kid known for sending huge airs. Personally, I don’t care, but I think it’s an interesting dynamic. Meola is Hawaiian born too

As a foreigner, I at least know it's not up to someone like me to dictate how gems like pipe and its (actual) surfers are celebrated. If it wasn't for content from you / other locals like you that exposed me to surfing's roots, I probably wouldn't have realized that. Thank you for your content, and thank you for speaking up. I'm a guy from New York who fell in love with surfing, and who will never have the ethos that you have over the direction that surf culture goes in; Please don't let the guys in suits win. They don't see that beauty, they only see their quarterly bonus. Thank you for recognizing your power over these issues in surfing, and thank you for using your influence to do something about it.

Do you know if there’s a specific reason why John and Kelly aren’t competing? Like does it have to do with the event and who gets invited? Or they decided not to do it?

Thanks for speaking out about this. As a fan, it took a lot of online research to figure out what was even going on with the pipe comps this year. I am still not sure if it is affiliated with the wsl or not. It seems like very few wsl people are participating, which is confusing if it is a wsl event? Because of the format, I was worried it was replacing the shootout but I'm glad that's not the case! Agree, if the best pipe surfers aren't there the winner can't call themselves a Pipe Master. Kinda sucks.

It will be even better to hear Stabs response. They are so vocal on everything topical that surfers of note bring up. They also pretty much ignored that all the top guys pulled out of the event. Well done Koa for bringing it up!

Always a back story…as an outsider to Hawaii and pipe, having followed and dreamed about surfing since I was a kid, mostly through magazines and hard to find videos…this whole thing was confusing and I was just thinking well, the shootout must be the main local event and WSL Pipe Masters in Jan must be the international one, but this my KZread friend, has shed a lot of light. Your love for surf and culture always comes through, especially on this vid. For what it’s worth, the contest was, weird, you nailed that. Pipe didn’t seem to support it either 😂 Stay WOKE, lol, that was funny, and yeah part 2 brah 🙌🙏 keep it poppin.

Thanks for being so honest on what the WSL is doing. They are basically taking the tradition of the Shootout and screwing it up (I think I have heard this story before if you know what I am talking about). The whole point of "Pipe Masters" is to see who can get the best barrels, now someone may possibly get to become a pipe master without ever getting covered.

His family are famous for keeping it real and they have always had the courage to do what needs to be done and to say what needs to be said. Respect!

100% agree. When I first heard about it I thought "did they rename and reformat the backdoor shootout?" Hopefully this is the last time Wsl does this. Also very confusing with Wsl running the first event of the season next year. This seems more like a redbull one off event than the Pipe Masters.

I love how Koa just absolutely savagely rips the whole thing apart in his awesome lovable kind and polite way with no ego and still just honestly and matter of factly states but i will do it cos it a great payday. If it helps pay for more content go hard!

love the honesty mate but I can’t agree.. there’s enough standard pipe events, which are awesome in their own right.. but I’m super keen to see this one, something different in the way of dudes that don’t get to surf pipe for whatever reason but are still hellmen from all over the world.. there’s a lot of chargers that don’t come to hawaii every winter.. so let’s see the best of the best from around the world take on you locals.. what’s so bad about that? and the air thing, they never said they’ll score them as high as a huge barrel, ya just get more points for tacking one on the end in combination of a huge barrel instead of kicking out. Go hard son looking forward to seeing take them on 💪

I've seen enough of CT guys in contest actually excited to see some other guys. Most of the new invitees charge. The part about scoring the air seems pretty dumb but it won't matter if the waves are pumping it will be all barrels so let's go!

If anything, this gives Da Hui contest more legitimacy to keeping true to some of the basics. That Pipeline is about the most critical choice, then drop, then composure and skill making it through, and whatever gravy you can top all that with when you finish the wave. Obviously if you throw a major air that is going to get scored along with the preceding skills. But Pipe is not an air wave and should never have that be a main or even secondary criteria. Great job Koa.

Been watching the Da Hui Backdoor Shootout for the last few years. When the video stream is working good, it’s so much better than Pipe Masters. The commentary is great with local history and positive vibes flowing. The surfing is 100 (or 12) when it’s pumping, which it usually is.

Yep I’m on page with this. Especially with him still participating. Love the honesty and opinion.

Vans and the WSL have a hard on for airs. I love a good air, but you can't force it. If you're not getting a killer barrel at Pipe/Backdoor, your score can only go so high. I do love the Da Hui format though. Hope we see more of that with proper credit given.
