If anyone is wondering about the taste, I had the chance to taste their meat once. Do you know about that small dark-colored inner part of the drumstick that's usually the best piece of meat from a regular chicken? Every piece of meat from these Đông Tảo chickens are like that but much much better: Extremely firm but not chewy, very aromatic with dense chicken flavor. The best part for me, would be their feet which are even more aromatic with full of crunchy textures, almost taste like a really good chicken soup in solid form. Hands-down the best chicken I've ever had in my life.

The organic meat of the chickens my grandparents raised back in the day in Eastern Europe was also significantly darker, fibrous, and tasted completely different from what you buy in the store. Any breed of chicken takes about a year and a half to two years to fully mature, if fed regular food without concentrates and other crap that makes them grow in just 3-4 months so we can consume them. Yeah, I've seen the whole process from chick to mature chicken and it's long which is why my grandmother kept young hens for eggs, the young roosters for fresh meat, and honestly, then older hens who were between 6-8 years had the best meat for soups, especially in winter.

The regular domesticated chickens my grandmother's got in the village she lives, also have a rather more brown, stringier fiber-like meat that is stronger to taste, rather than the white one you find in stores. These are chickens that run around all day and peck and enjoy their lives. Most people don't realize that it does take quite a while for a chick to develop into a hen or rooster, if they feed on good food and run all day and eat vegetation in the summertime, after generations their meat changes. If you have a chick that hatched in springtime it may start to lay its first eggs (much smaller at the beginning) only next springtime and that if you are lucky as it usually takes two seasons. This is the way it should be done, but since the demand is so big, who cares if the animal is locked up in a small space and lays eggs every day literally 5-6 months after they hatched. I do not eat eggs from those chickens, because I don't feel is right. My granmda gives me a dozen a week and yeah, in late fall and winter they lay a lot less though.

More likely its survival food, and eating every part of the animal. Cuisine in once poor or still poor village towns tend to have food that have all sorts of the odds and ends of an animal for food. That's why many people visiting more wealthier places are often shaken and disgusted that so much food is wasted after a meal but also during food prep. It doesn't end with feet either as trotters are popular in southern cuisine, chicken wings too were once considered poor people food. Organs, skin, blood and bones are very often discarded in wealthy areas, and are hyper focused on muscle only, whereas other poorer communities, doesnt matter what culture, will utilize them, like how there's haggis, sausage, and blood pudding as some western examples.

to be fair, a flock of chickens where 1 is worth $1-2k is a really good investment, if you get a rooster and 10 hens and each hen lays 10 fertile eggs, well that's money in the banks right there! You'll have a decent population of 100 chickens in not time and from there they just turn into the golden Egg laying goose! Yes it might be a lot of hard work, but you have to remember, most animal farmers in the west have to work way harder and need to get feed for animals that are 10 to 100 times bigger then the rooster and end up with a small profit per animal head. So these Chicken could mean the life blood of many farms!
