I absolutely adore this book, I already digged this novel. I cried so much when Baker died and then later McVries :(

When I read this story as a youngster, I decided to try walking until I dropped based upon the rules laid out by King. I lasted a pitiful 12 hours or so before the pain and boredom stopped me. And for the next few days I could barely walk. Finding out that someone actually created a marathon based on this made me smile ear to ear. It's a shame Darabont hasn't made an adaptation, after his bold make of the Mist.

I read this when I was about 13. I'm 49, and I revisit it every dozen, or so years. I've given away every copy I've bought (the Bachman Books), and don't have one today. Rage is as good. However, I read that long before anyone thought of bringing a gun to school. Running Man, and Roadwork are very good too.

The “Prize”, defined in the story, is “everything you want for the rest of your life.” Which staggers the imagination as to how the country’s economy could afford more than even one Walk prizewinner. Also I’m surprised you didn’t mention how closely this novel resembles a modern Shirley Jackson story. In the world the story takes place, it’s not just normal that Long Walkers get shot dead in a macabre competition every year.... there’s a sort of glory in taking part. Garraty is described as supremely excited to get the acceptance letter. Your analysis of its symbolism of war and sending our children to war, is spot on.

Great review man. I didn’t realize the connection to the Vietnam War. Thanks. Insightful. I was furious at the ending, but still loved the process of reading it! One of my favourite fiction titles.

Great video!! I love this book so much! It's dark and to me honestly one of King's most disturbing stories. There is so much going for it, the story, the characters, the concept. I feel so deeply for the characters and felt like I was walking along side them while reading. The book brings up many questions and can be interpreted in many ways! If there ever is a film, please don't make it into a teen/romance type thing like "The Hunger Games", not throwing shade at that book and series but "The Long Walk " is far from that. Lastly if this was made into a film, it would be best on Netflix or Amazon in my opinion!

Very well done Sir. I know this story very well. I would have liked a bit more about the "society" in the story (IE: The Major , the Lottery . ) But in total , Bravo. However , I hold out VERY little hope that a film adaptation would be done faithfully . The shear fact that the walkers are boy's between 12 and 18 , and are gunned down ALONE would cause to much "fuss and the heartbreak of Butt-Hurtness" Olson 's demise for easy example. As a "studio" film , PG-13 watery slop is what we would get at best. IMO. If you know of a way to get a copy of the old 1st draft script , I would love to read it. Again , wonderful work. Proud to be a new subscriber!! Peace

2 billion is bet every year in vegas, the get 3 warnings and one renewed every hour they walk. No breaks no stops, no excuses. After three warnings, they have 2 minutes to continue or...."POP!" Correct on the shooting and food and water.

At last a horror movie about a topic that truly horrifies Americans... excercise! LOL 😂 (no offense intended, it’s a joke also I’m American). This book was interesting I hope in the movie they also focus on how the media glorifies certain roles unintentionally or otherwise and sensationalizes gruesome events also how political factions use it for cheap publicity how everything is just entertainment to increasingly isolated people in society as a whole maybe how young people are sucked in to getting in over their heads perhaps I wonder if they will include garrity’s sexual thoughts so close to deaths shadow probably not if they want a lower rating for a wider audience Nd more ticket sales.

Darabont is blacklisted in Hollywood after the whole debacle with - The Walking Dead! Many layers going on here. Since he can't get anything made, he decided to releasy the rights so somebody else could.
