Why Navy Sailors Train Inside A Tear Gas Chamber In Boot Camp | Boot Camp | Business Insider

We got an inside look at how US Navy recruits are exposed to tear gas during basic training. Insider spent five days at Navy Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, where we observed recruits at various stages of their 10-week boot camp. During the fourth week of training, recruits learn how to properly don an M50 gas mask and are exposed to CS gas in the "confidence chamber." While wearing a gas mask, the recruits watch as an instructor burns a CS capsule over a hot plate, filling the chamber with gas. Recruits then remove their masks completely and experience the full effects of tear gas.
For the first time ever, our crew was allowed to film inside any branch or agency's tear gas chamber, and in order to truly understand the effects of CS gas, Insider chief video correspondent Graham Flanagan decided it was time to experience the confidence chamber himself…

@@donaldlunara5653 Are you REALLY implying that by serving in the US Armed Forces you have comming a sin?? Maybe you should worry about the "plank in your own eye" instead of the speck in others.. Or better yet, try reminding your fellow "Christians" that nowhere in the bible does it say that Jesus was into forcing his beliefs down the throats of others..espically when they didn't share the same beliefs as he did. WE ALL HAVE TO RESPECTFUL OF EACH OTHER'S BELIEFS AND CHOICES espically when they may be different from our own.. And espically when it comes to ANY WOMAN'S RIGHT TO CHOOSE!! Everything, but a fever ( reason why I didn't go to medical, otherwise I would've been recycled). That gas cleared everything including my headache. I walked out (all smiles) while others puked and cried. I didn't have watch that night, either. Slept like baby. Best sleep I ever had. Also, when I completed BAY-OPS in Aircrew. Slept like baby after that one, too. Man that fucker was cold.

We then marched to our barracks to wash up the dried messes off of our faces before marching off to chow.

If you're ever in a room that has been hit with CS and don't have a mask, besides military training, breath shallow through your nose, squint your eyes and don't touch any bare skin especially your face or eyes. I spent several minutes inside a gas chamber doing just that and didn't have near the effects of anyone else. It didn't even bother me till I hit the fresh air which made the eyes burn and then did have to touch either side of my nose to farmer's blow all the snot that kept coming out. Probably the clearest my sinuses have ever been after a lot of blowing. Anywhere clothes met exposed skin also burned some because of the rubbing as you moved. Some of the instructors in the room didn't even wear masks, I guess some people can get used to it if you do the right things while you are in there without having to talk and breath it down your throat.

Standard in all military training?? In The Netherlands it is. Goofing off, going in with eyes and mouth closed... then on command put on gas mask, only to find out yours in not there anymore. :-)

I haven't seen one of these videos feature the fire fighting training. I was a squad leader, and that was more fun than Disneyland, but for grownups. That was back in the 70s. Do they still do that?

Confidence as opposed to gas chamber is a bit silly considering that it is literally a chamber with the sole function of exposing people to cs gas, but I appreciate their intent not to be associated with more notorious gas chambers.

As a retired U.S Army combat veteran, I would assume that justifying the need to be better at using such PPE, would be more important on 'or in' a boat than it would in any other branch.

Never had to do the gas chamber when I went to boot camp in October 1995. They said that it was too cold to do it.

Incorrect, when I went through basic training int he early 90's at San Diego, California RTC it was known as the Gas chamber. Not this whimpy Confidence Chamber! I was stationed at Great Lakes for 2 years at Great Lakes doing Physical Security right after 9/11 and I did not see one single recruit do anything that I went through for 8 weeks in San Diego! I remember having to wave my arms in the air to fan the gas into the area that we were standing in. I had to state my name, rank, and then the Company Commander asked us to recite the longest General Order. We did not wear either camo uniforms. We wore the traditional dungree uniforms that are no longer in use now. After we went through the gas chamber we then went to have lunch. I never say a single recruit get dropped on the grinder doing any PT like I was in San Diego, no Marching Party, or Short Tour either. I bet if I was still in condition like I was when I joined the Navy in the early 90's I could blow away a lot of recruits in pushups and sit ups I bet. LOL

You gotta do this shit every year in the Marines. Idk if Navy has to but I’m assuming they do. It sucks but it’s made worse by being made to PT while doing this 😂. I can’t say I miss it but I rather do this than be sprayed with OC spray again
