I went to Auto Club races from 2010-2023 and I really miss the days where the engine would fail mechanically at the midpoint of a race. There was always that uncertainty, unpredictability, and nervousness when your favorite driver was out front hoping their engine wouldn't blow. Since about 2015/2016 though engine failures have become almost non-existent, we might get ONE per year now if we're lucky.

Part of that is because teams only use the engines twice. Horsepower was still like 800+ but the teams chose to only run tbem twice thus in a way improving reliability. So even with more power i doubt that will return as much for engine failures etc

My tinfoil hat theory is that they are waiting until the hybrid engine is introduced to increase the HP. Nascar knows that any form of electrification will be unpopular with the older fans. However, if Nascar can say "hey, these engines will have electric components, but they add 200 HP to the car" then the older fans will be more welcoming of the change.

I don’t know why nascar won’t add horsepower. All 3 manufacturers have said multiple times they are willing to do it and the engine builders said these engines can handle way more power than what they have right now. The power number to get new manufacturers is working. Just raise the power. The way to get new manufacturer is by having better races. The new aero package was a start but it’s hard to tell at phoenix. NASCAR has to add power. With how this car is built they have no other options right now.

Reliability…NASCAR runs 98 octane fuel, 12:1 compression, not hard to make a 800 hp 358ci pushrod V-8(while following all the other rules 4.125bore limit deck height limit etc.) very reliable, so that argument is trash. Passing….just ask Tony Stewart about passing. More power would mean more throttle off time, would help show driver talent, would probably help with aero, and would cause wheel spin and generally more tire wear….that adds up to better Racing what nascar should be concerned with.

I think the main reason why NASCAR won't increase horsepower is because they want a new manufacturer to invest in the sport. Similar to how expansion works in sports. A big organization gets added salary caps increse, driver salaries increase and prize pools for each race increase. I wouldn't be surprised if NASCARs charter agreements have been put on pause because they are eagerly waiting on a new oem.

Hi Eric, I'm Aldo from Italy. The issue with NASCAR (and many other forms of motoracing) is that if you've got low power and high grip, the cars go glued to the track and there's no overtaking. If you've got more power and less grip, the cars fight to stay on track and there's only one groove, so there's no overtaking. The greatest difference between what we see today compared to what we saw back in the early 2000's is that in every single run, the speed of cars hardly change. There's no more the "flat fast car" that leads the pack for 10/15 laps with new tyres and then falls back, the "midrange car" that starts in the top5 and after 10/15 laps takes the lead and the "endurance car" that gains the lead just few laps before the green flag pit stops. Nowadays we see a car in the lead from the start to the end of the stage. Some times someone reached the leader just before the end of stage but the stage yellow stop them from fighting.

I really love how Todd Gilliland always gets ignored around here just thankful you interviewed him, i keep saying it hes a underdog talent that never really gets mentioned or cared about he is really seems like a really Nice guy a really humble man, that just gets so ignored by other drivers i bet you if Todd Gilliland wins a race actually wins, they be talking about other on track stuff or horsepower or other stuff ignoring this man. I been speaking of his talent far back as his days in the Napa 16 car if correct which i think i am, the man is a good hearted guy that is happy to be in cup has a slow but steady learning abilty, he makes the best out of his equipment and always at times pops in the top 10 and STILL isnt mentioneed even others reviews of Todds MOST LEAD LAPS breaking many #1s best atarting position that day, lead the most laps first time lead not only most laps but most in his career, and really showed he belonged even when he was doing really good for a Sophmore people still were ignoring this man, he should of got promoted than Harrison Burton, who showed his best in Kyle Busches team that last year but just placed below Harrision though the rest of the later part Todd showed more good finishes than him, but Harrison got up lifted, Todds always having to fight claw for anything he gets and this man , still by most standards GETS IGNORED. Its like what does this man have to do to get real appreciation? Or acknowledged its why hes not my favorite Then John Hunter 2nd best drivers of any division i want him to really do great prove these people that IGNORE Him and show them up and it come back to me saying i TOLD YOU !!!! Give this man a real chance even in a better car and see where he goes but it wont happen, he gets ignored alot, and when he does he may struggle a little but when hes on point he wins and does great i think its usually 3 years then gets good in Trucks took 3 years to do the best of the other 2 if not mistaken best finishes in Kyle Busches team then in Front Row took 2nd year to get Dominate, 2-3 so while you all ignore this man . I am gonna see his real talent .. while you all talk about other stuff and ignore real talent. Joey Logano, Hamlin all these overrated bee nthere done that is old news. Yea their gonna do good .. But what about hidden Gems that do really good when do in what would be smaller teams that really has proven something over the TOP. But naw just ignored ignored ignored. But me i am not Ignoring Todd, just like John Hunter many of you IGNORED his talent but i didnt and look at him now! It be same with Todd if not get ousted. You all doubted him the man has talent, the man does the best with his equipment and tries not to wreck it. But ... anyone care? Only me.

My thought is this...nascar doesn't want to increase horse power to a big number on internal combustion alone, they likely want to find a way to do that with electric motors, or other type of hybrid systems..... thats my guess...which also will bring more manufacturers that are heavy on the hybrid side

You won't see cup full electric, that's half the appel to the sport, for instance, go watch clips of la man, everyone talked about the sound, that's here to stay, but nascar being a partner with McLaren means there potential to use some of their State of the art systems, Including adding a hybrid system... my guess is nascar max takes horse power to 700, but in the future you may see 850-900 with the addition of some hybrid tech. Just a guess from a guy who watches all forms of racing and really dives deep into the tech side of things.

Every team has basically said they could easily adjust the horsepower. That means a new OEM would already have the spec for the engine. To put it nicely, NASCAR has to put on their big boy pants for once, and up the power and watch the tracks they struggle at suddenly become barn burners again. 80hp+ isn't much to give fans and drivers and teams and basically everyone who's not a weenie within NASCAR itself what they want

I think when you can have OEM street cars with more HP off the lot nowadays, and there are grassroots series that run more HP, it makes the Cup series just less cool and takes away the "superhero" aspect. Not to mention the overall screaming live presence of a more powerful car. Taking someone to a race and having see 200 into a corner is a lot cooler and memorable than 175... The biggest, baddest series in the nation should BE the biggest, baddest series in the nation.

I've honestly stopped buying NASCAR's argument to keep horsepower down to attract new manufacturers a while ago. Aside from the increase they gave the Gen 7 before the start of the 2022 season, all they've done is take HP out of the Cup car for nearly the last decade. And the only "new manufacture talks they've had were with Dodge two to three years ago, which went nowhere, and now Honda which, let's be frank, as much as I'd like to see them in NASCAR are only likely pursuing a possible bid to join the sport in conjunction with their threats to leave IndyCar after 2026 if they don't get a new chassis and aero package by then. And in the past, Honda has stated they'd have to pull out of one of their other racing and motorsports commitments if they were to join another racing series such as NASCAR. NASCAR's continued rejection of the drivers and what top figures from engine builders for Ford, Chevy, and Toyota have said is only going to keep holding back their short-track product.

Three of five are in the south and the other two are in the mid-west. So, all of Nascar's attempts to gain viewers elsewhere seem to be failing.

Because lower down force means harder to drive, outs it more in the drivers hand, more mistakes, more passing. If you add down force the cars will be too easy to drive and the cars are so closely matched it will suck. Trust me. The next Gen car even with low down force package still has way more down force than the gen 6 car. Adding down force will just increase on throttle time and that only will help a track were drafting comes into an effect, not at short tracks and road courses. If you don't believe me, watch a formula 1 race. You won't find more down force than that. The racing sucks

Increased horsepower is a risk to the car manufacturers. Al three are getting plenty of advertising just the way it is now. Manufacturers don't want to be embarrassed with a blown engine. Actually the manufacturers are getting the deal of the century...advertising with a product they don't make/build. It's like Coca-Cola getting credit for making sewing machines. What company builds these race cars? It is there logo that belongs on the hood of the car. The horsepower is not important to the owners, manufacturers because there making money the way it is now. To the fans, it is a different story.
