NASCAR Hall of Fame driver Darrell Waltrip on The Garage Shop Insider
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Darrell Waltrip wowed fans with his driving, irked competitors with his words and left his mark on the track and in the broadest booth. As a three-time NASCAR championship driver, before he became an owner and then earned a new fan base as a broadcaster for FOX TV, he earned - and owned - his nickname of Jaws.
Watch this incredible and very candid interview in this episode of "The Garage Shop Insider" Podcast.

Haven't watched anything NASCAR since Jr retired. This was my era & Sr & DW were the best.
I love listening to Darrell talking about his history. I was there when he ran his first race at Talladega in the #95 Terminal Transport Trucking Car. My dad drove for that company out of Atlanta. I can remember my Dad coming in from a run that Sunday morning telling me that Terminal Transport was sponsoring a car in that race. He told me about Stevie's Grand Dad, making that happen through Texas Gas. When Darrell pulled in the garage area, me and my best friend snuck in the garage to see him.
Waltrip and I are the same age. I’m from Evansville and followed his career all the way along. A great diver and a fun guy with a good mind and incredible to listen to.
Darrell,I'm glad u came along when you did.70s 80s & 90s were the best.Dale Sr & DW!!!!!!!!

Every sport has their historians and legendary characters and DW is the Nascar version
I'll give DW that, he consistently had the best paint schemes out there! The Gatorade, Bud, Mt Dew and Tide ride were the sharpest on track!
i love listening to ole DW 🤟🏻🤟🏻 got some damn good stories & always talking about something different 🤣 buddy has lived 3-4 times over 🤜🏻
You gotta admire the relationships he had with other drivers. Despite their job it’s nothing personal, just business. In the end they’re still friends.
Id love to see DW, Ken Schrader, Kyle Petty and Dale Sr on the couch taking the piss out of each other today 🤣

@@TheGarageShop200 I really did. Interviewer asked good questions and more importantly let the guest speak. There's such a balance between not engaging enough and doing too much. Big time DW fan here. Saw him at Performance Chevrolet in Durham, NC back in '88, the week before the Fall Martinsville race. Had his car there that went on to Victory Circle that weekend. I had a radio controled car with the 1988 Monte Carlo body made up to look just like his Tide Ride that he signed for me. I still have that car. My question to Darrell would be, what was your best car that you drove in a race, whether you won or not in it?

I was just 18 year old kid and went to the Poconos race. Waltrip was running the 11 car, and the spectators were booing the man? I didn't know why? Guy, next to me said, that's waltrip he's terrible, race car driver, a few more laps went by, I leaned over and said to this guy if he's so terrible how come he's winning the damn race. Looks pretty good to me. This guy was like shshsh!! Don't talk good about him you won't make it out of here alive. Halfway through the race, I went and bought a waltrip shirt. That guy leaned over again said don't talk to us anymore. That was my first Nascar race. Waltrip was one of the best.

This was not at all what I expected. I never really liked Darrell as a race car driver; I thought he was too cocky. When I saw that this video was going to be 50 minutes long, I figured I'd watch for 10 minutes or so just to see what Darrell was like these days. Instead, I watched and enjoyed the entire conversation. He remains a "confident" person, but he also very engaging. Your conversation drew out some good stories from him. Incidentally, while I was never a Darrell Waltrip fan, his chrome Western Auto paint scheme is my all-time favorite NASCAR paint job. Even with all the fancy things that they can do with computers and vinyl wraps, I still like the white, orange, black and shades of gray Western Auto paint job.

Darrell is right, parity should be left out! I say race your own ride and not something that is made to be like all others! GO RACING, but with the safety rules. He has the racing mentality!
Old DW was a good driver.
This man is a national treasure.
Hearing DW talk about David Pearson and Bobby Isaacs remind me of Mark Martin talking about his setups. He would willingly give them out because he felt he could still beat them. I'm sure Pearson and Isaac could out drive you, even if you knew what they were doing.

Hey, thanks!
My favorite one-liner by 'ole DW was the last Daytona 500 I ever attended, in '89, where he won the race strictly on fuel mileage. He didn't pit for fuel during the last scheduled stop, which put him in 1st place, and he was literally about to run out of gas during those final laps. It was a huge deal, because DW was one of a few drivers eligible to win the million dollar Unocal bonus money. I can't recall if it was right after the race, later that night, or even the next day........but some reporter asked him: "How much gas did ya really have left in that tank Darrell?"........... he looked at the reporter with a sh*t eatin' grin and said: "A million dollars worth".........LOL!!! That was priceless.

I guess my question is, did Darrell's 72 Monte Carlo come from Banjo's. I have never heard Darrell say where the 72 Monte Carlo came from. The car I am asking about is (Darrell Waltrip won his first pole of his career while driving a 1972 Chevrolet Monte Carlo at Nashville in 1974. The Franklin TN resident ran a 101.274 mph lap over the .596 mile rack).

He's right about racing in the Golden Age . What's awesome about racing is the respect they have for their history. They competed against each other would kill them on the track. .metaphorically....but always in the end they are great friends. And laugh about their rivalries.

Love DW...NASCAR is in a freefall. It sucks today. I have been a life long fan until the playoff started. That is so terrible for the sport. If you gonna have a playoff...just let the 16 drivers in the "chase" race and get the other idiots off the track. No other sport has play offs were the losers still play and can change the outcome of the play offs. I still don't watch it anymore...I do follow Chase Elliot.
