Why Monitors Matter + Yamaha HS5 Studio Monitor Review

Музыка

At Fuzz City, we recently upgraded to the Yamaha HS5 Studio Monitors and we couldn't be happier with them. In today's video We will be comparing the first two Dream Machine albums that were mixed using small and lousy M Audio monitors, to a clip from Dream Machine "Living The Dream", our upcoming record, which was mixed using the Yamaha HS5 Monitors. Will these monitors work for your space? It is very likely! Can you just walk into any Guitar Center and grab a pair, currently yes! In addition to reviewing the Yamaha HS5s, I am happy to provide a significant dose of philosophical ranting about exactly why monitors are so important. How could upgrading your studio monitors help it improve your home recording studio set up?

    I like to play music at night so I've always just used headphones to mix. Afterwards I play the track on multiple speakers to get an idea of the true sound. Car speakers are a great gauge to work with!

    Don't disregard the super-critical car speaker test... I mix on a set of HS-7s and an Avantone mono speaker to get me to within a whisker of the perfect mix but it won't get that final tick until it sounds good in the car.

    Just got a pair of those for me. Out of the box they totally changed my mind about the mix of the song I'm working on. I ran back to decrease the bass gain and render it again. Then I had a listen to Dream Machine's first one. Not bad for my ears...I actually thought a bit of the muddyness was just artistic choice

But i totally understand where your coming from.. it’s like, the light at the end of the tunnel.. when u can mix clearly or even recognize that now you understand, that u need to listen in true form.. and be surgical with each instrument! Great video

    That what I heard from your coming album, the presence of the drums is characteristic from direct mixing. I listen you on head ears covered phones, and KZread level do not cut too much the signal, so very fine to listen your music that's why first I came to explore your channel, I'm from the sixties, so my ears have the analogic culture. Monitors, yeah, triangle , angles, reverberation of the room, size of bass, headphones also, to compare, and perhaps the musician himself or herself in place of a technician, as good he will be in technical work, he need to be the Artist.

    Just bought a pair myself, I like ‘em! Question: I see you have a Tascam 388, I’ve had one since the mid-‘90s and have recorded a lot with it. I’m mostly digital now, but do you record digitally through the 388 circuitry? How do you combine digital and analog recording?

  • @WindsweptDrive

    @WindsweptDrive

    Ive had a 388 since the 80s but haven't used it for at least 10 years as my studio is all digital. Just b pulled it out from under my bed and im currently cleaning it up for evaluation. Studio monitors are Yamaha HS8s. The 388 has excellent pre amps for fab vocal mic use. Get a GOOD 8 input digtal interface, a compatible 8 lead snake, and use the program outs from the 388 to the interface. Just use the tascam as a mixer - no tape recording - and digital record right into the computer

    Don't forget to mix in mono - especially early on in the mix when you're making significant changes to levels and EQ... switch between stereo and mono later in the mix to get a better idea of panning and stereo effects but to begin with, mono is king.

    hs8s are flatter. Hs5s are scooped at 1khz, and they go down to around 74hz -3db. You need some time to learn hs5s and you need a subwoofer. They seem like a replica of ns10s but less accurate in their sound signature. yamaha hs8s are flatter but too much bass for a small room.

We used a handful of these to get our drum sound. great on toms, speaker cabs, vocals, anything really.

    You really need to know what your target audience is using to listen to music. What percentage listen mostly through their car audio? How many mostly use ear buds or headphones? What percentage still prefer their home stereo systems? How many listen mostly streamed through their TV audio systems? Once you know your target you can check your mix using their listening environment tools. For home use I got a pair of old Roland digital speakers that connect by fiber optics to my Roland digital studio.

    they are not really good, good Price value maybe, but wouldnt touch them if i get them for free. a good pair of original ns10 is the way better speaker.. Probably it would be wise and spend more on a pair of neumans, you will keep forever, and can be enhanced with a matching and tight dsp subwoofer. You get what you pay for.. and hs5 are on the very cheap side. Its no art to be better than m audio or behringer.. but try to find something better than neumans.. may spend twice for focals, but neumans are more monitor/ less hifi. Its a very wise tip to get better monitors, but them do come with a price tag. But who dont buys right, buys twice. Yamahs are beginner minitors that have left any studio u ve seen them in.. they are no keepers..Should reflect on the use market with even lower prices. Getting old jbls 4412 and get them refoamed can be a very wose budget choice, especially on a good sounding cult amp.. they blow that class d trash out of the room. Every body wants to buy my 4412 from me… but dream on.. Since all old foams crumbled by now they sometimes come as real bargains.. I actually payed 0.-.. but 320.- for the refoaming. Actually a price real ns 10 can be found with some luck. Them really do bring mixes ahead..on a good amp. many morinians have the old 20 watt hifi of their little sister on them and tell bullshit than about their sound.. Passive speakers are only as good as their amp. Getting a new psur of neumans is for now the proffesionals choice.. best bang for the buck and very precise..You only rarely see them second hand, almost like never..
