Why Mohr's Circle - Brain Waves.avi

Why do we calculate Mohr's circle? The process of drawing the circle is not hard to learn, but it's not always clear what we learn from doing it. I explain the basic ideas (without math) using some physical exmaples.

hello sir, why are we interested in finding the stress (max shear/principle stresses) which are not really happening on the element. ie; why r we finding the stresses which wud occur only if we rotate the element ?? because the element is not getting rotated in physical world, so why r we interested in that.

But what does the angle exactly tells me? That if I change the direction angle of the rocket it will fail? Or what?

if you look at many of the beam problems in Structural Statics course, a vertical load in beams will cause bending moments, and shear loads in the beams. Thus we need something to take into account a combined Bending and Shear stress.

Too often, Professors delve into the trees (and branches) without showing the forest and students do not understand why they are doing what they are doing. Thanks, you are the first instructor I have seen relate the micro of the Mohr's circle to the macro of the real world (using your compound bow example). Thank You.

You obviously know your audience. That's critical! Good job purdueMET. I've been a ChemE for nearly 30 yrs. However, my educational background is ME. I'm also a registered engineer. I find your video very helpful. Where I work, we have several young non-tech, sci-fi nerds who ask me aerospace questions. We produce oxidizers for MFGs of solid rock motors. So there is the connection. I find it difficult to explain the physics of rocketry. I get too technical. Your video on "Why Mohr's Circle" is a good vehicle to show them the big picture.
