Why Moffat's Return is Great for Doctor Who

Фильм және анимация

So recently we just had the absolutely huge news that former Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat is returning to write for Series 14. Some people love this decision and some people hate it, so I thought I'd dive into it and see what all the fuss is about...

Doctor who isn't stuck in the past.... apart from having Tennant, Catherine Tate, RTD, Bonnie Lanford and the Moff back.... And, fans aren't hypocrites.... apart from how they hated on the Moff and yet now, are gushing over him coming back? And I'm sure there's plenty of fans who bitched about Jodie (justified or not) who will gush over her if she returns. My point is: we're all both right and wrong as fans. But, let's face it: this is better than another sodding SEVENTEEN YEARS OF NO DOCTOR WHO.

I just think it's funny that fans act like RTD hates Moffat, I remember in the late 2010s where every word RTD said about Doctor Who was twisted into a coded insult towards Moffat. In reality they are good friends and The Husbands of River Song was literally a Christmas gift from Moffat to Russell.

Can I say both? On the one hand, having the Grand Moff back is the best news I've heard out of DW since "Twice Upon a Time" ended. But it honestly worries me that they're feeding the nostalgia bait and trying to have it be Series 1 to 4 again.

  • @vullord666

    @vullord666

This has been my biggest worry ever since the three specials. Modern who has this great formula built up of allowing itself to be perceptive and change and new ideas. Every actor had a tenure of 3 series (except 9 unfortunately) and showrunner two doctors. And RTD to Moffat set this up greatly. Both were so different and appealed to and angered different fans. It kept doctor feeling fresh and like a show that could do anything. In comparison I've HATED all these insistent reboots and remakes and whatnot coming from the same batch of writers (or what feels like them) because production companies are too afraid to make any risks. I was (well still am) feeling weird that Doctor Who basically just fell into the same trap because Chibnall took that risk taking and freedom DW had too far. It's the fact that David Tennant LED the 60th anniversary. Not Jodie or Ncuti. And that will never fully sit right with me. I've just accepted the situation and am hopeful that while, Moffat and RTD are both nostalgia baits, their writing won't be. I hope that while it might feel familiar (and it has felt so familiar and that was one of my biggest problems with the special), they'll take risks with new ideas and be the creative DW deserves. And granted while Chibnall was a new writer, none of what he did actually felt creative or risk taking. In fact he even backtracked his own timeless child mess the same episode it was revealed (saying it doesn't matter and lampshading it). Somehow RTD has made more mention of the trauma that reveal would cause than Chibnall (granted I stopped watching after the series 12 finale so maybe I'm wrong). That's what I'm hopeful for.

All of mainstream criticism of Moffat as a showrunner comes down to Series 6 and 7. People seem to forget that seires 8, 9 and 10 have much lower scope series archs that move away from the convoluted plots of Moffat1 and also from the finale powerscaling of Russell1

Just to point out an interesting phenomena. Over here in the Chinese DW fandom, perceptions about RTD and Moff are the exact opposite, with the Moff getting almost universally loved, while RTD was often criticized for unstable quality output and deus ex mechina. So public perception is a funny thing. These opposite views cannot be both right, but they can be both illusionary. Just put them to rest and enjoy the ride.

Both RTD and Moffat have written some of my least favorite scenes, episodes, and choices in Doctor Who, but also have both written some of my favorite (and Moffat my very favorite). I'll always give my personal vote to Moffat because 12 is MY Doctor and his tenure peak who for me (series 5 is also up there). Part of me is always going to wish Chibnall hadn't made it so we NEED them back and the BBC kept letting new writers lead new eras of who, but both RTD and Moffat are great writers and they are also both really humble with their positions and understand the concept of critical feedback and that not everyone is going to love every writing choice they make. At least in the interviews. They've even talked about their own writing after the fact in the way many fans do; acknowledging their short comings. Plus they just have great podcast energy together (which we need a full podcast series of them if the BBC is reading this). Doctor Who won't be perfect under either or them (it isn't under anyone), but I'm a lot more confident in both.

I agree, when there’s soo many talented writers and composers out there (some of which became writers/composers etc due to being inspired by New Who after growing up with it) and who could bring new life into Who, why are we having people like Murray Gold back when he composed 10 series of the show and why would the first people RTD approaches as guest writers be Chibnal/Moffat when they just had an entire era under their run when since then there’s so many new talented writers out there who should be given the same chance to shine that these producers/writers have had. Obviously that’s not to say the previous writers shouldn’t return but I’m struggling to see why a revival of Doctor Who has no one new to the production team other than the new cast.

Watched this after Boom. I wasn't thrilled to hear Moffat come back but he honestly addressed my criticisms of him and RTDs push to fantasy elements with his episode, Boom, the best episode of the new series. He gave us intellectual and skeptical theming. Ncuti questioning the Aglican Marine is what we needed after that shit with the language of ropes. We need more of it. Moffat shows that he can rejuvenate with his time away, RTD is yet to show that... And he's been gone longer.

Perhaps RTD was being courteous and inclusive to offer the previous show runners and writers the chance to contribute to the new series. A few episodes from past writers probably won't hurt but it is high time to bring in newer writers on board and have some different inputs. There's been good episodes from non-regular writers (family of blood, girl who waited). Some new input might also counterbalance some of the impact the show runner's style has on the stories, which was perhaps an issue in the SM and CC periods. Have to say 2 of the 3 specials also left a few doubts about the structuring of story telling from RTD himself; that didn't go as smooth as expected hopefully sharpens up in the coming season.

The only problems I had with Moffat as showrunner were the obsession with River Song and to a lesser extent the Weeping Angels, the love triangle with Rory and Amy (though I do like how that resolved with the Last Centurion), the sex jokes, and the idea that the show should be a "fairytale". He did eventually get us the best TARDIS design of New Who, dark colors aside. Put Moffat's 2nd TARDIS design with Davies' new TARDIS colors and working lighting and you've got a great TARDIS interior.

There's also an expectation of Moffat bringing something new and fresh for Series 14, and not to repeat the same stuff he does before, which was how fans criticised Sam Raimi for having many of his familiar tropes when he directed Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Personally, I feel Moffat returning as a writer under RTD is the best situation. Moffat was a great writer......but he was a bad showrunner. If you go back and actually rewatch those early Moffat seasons, you can really feel him struggling to try to pull his own RTD style long running drip feed plot while also pulling a "I need to make my mark on this series in every way possible." Look, RTD was far from perfect, but RTD knew the power of calm and quiet, and understood certain old monster factions like the Cybermen and Daleks far better than any of his successors (he got what they were meant to represent and really evoke in viewers more than later show runners, who either pandered too much to nostalgia or failed to realize their new ideas went against the core of the character concept). However, with RTD to keep him in check and to guide the flow of the series as a whole, I think we can get some really great content.

I think the best approach would be to have one or two episodes per series be written by previous writers, but circulate who gets to write them. Basically, Moffat would write an episode for Series 14, Gatiss gets one for Series 15, etc. They could then have other episodes be written by _newer_ people, giving them a turn in the spotlight whilst also having the more experienced writers in the background. Even better would be to have people like Moffat, RTD, and Gatiss work as advisors for newer writers, helping them keep things streamlined but allowing for new ideas and creative freedom.

Can you imagine if Moffat is the next showrunner?! 😂 Hopefully it won’t be Chibnall after that.

3:25 I feel like this happens whenever a new showrunner appears. Like, I can very well imagine in the future some people saying that Chibnall is way better than showrunner X. Once Chibnall himself took the reign, it felt like even the people who previously hated Moffat were now praising him! But it was a pretty heated time in 2017. I remember not daring to criticize Chibnall because everything felt so toxic and extreme. Say one good thing about Chibnall and you were villainized as a woke propaganda SJW or some shit insult and if you said one bad thing about Chibnall, you were accused of hating Doctor Who and people whose xenophobic misogynistic hate comments make you vomit abuse your criticizing comment of Chibnall as "proof" that the show is "dead". I love Thirteen as she literally changed my life but I think the Chibnall era is deeply flawed with some great concepts that were sadly executed poorly.

i don't mind is moffat has 1 or even 2 episodes a season, i am a fan oh his stories, as a showrunner hes a bit iffy with bad world building and bad finales and overarching series narratives, but single stories are great

I love the moff. All hail the moff. I love his work and i am excited for him to come back. I would rather have new writers instead of rtd little boys club but i do love his work. Chibs really embraced new writers which sometimes was amazing sometimes not but at least it embraced change.

i do not want a doctor who season without controversy or issue. preferably, it'd be at least semi palatable, unlike s12, but even flux had its good bits. RTD1 had its problems. moffat is an incredible writer--- who indulges in some serious 'hand down pants itis,' unfortunately. thus far though, its a small price to pay for the absolute bombshell additions he has made to the show.

I'm really excited that the loki writers are writing dr who episodes, I've always thought they would make great dr who writers, that said I'm still confused on why they haven't gotten any of the writers from the comics, or audio dramas to write some dr who episodes. johnathan morris, scott gray, and cavan scott are some of the best dr who writers full stop

Honestly don’t see how anyone can be unhappy about this. As you suggest his batting average, and the amount of time he will have had to develop this idea, suggest it will be a very high quality episode. I think the fandom was out of step with reality. I was a dr who fan but not involved in any fan communities during moffats run and people I knew of all different tastes loved the Smith era and many said Capaldi was the best doctor. Seems the fandom has come around to that with Capaldi now.

moffat is really good at 2 things characterisation of the doctor and single stories everything else is kind of meh, but those are the 2 things he needs when hes a writer, not a showrunner, he doesn't need worlbuilding, he doesn't need to come up with the overarching story of the season, he doesn't need to come up with new characters, just use characters who already exist (which is excells at enhancing already existing characters) and write a good one off story for the season

Imagine being mad that the best New Who writer and one of the best Doctor Who writers overall is coming back for an episode. I've had enough subpar Doctor Who since he left, best news regarding this new era of Doctor Who by far. For the haters, I'd be more worried about RTD writing 6/8 episodes having already written 4 prior episodes, than Moffat writing one episode. I wish he will come back in subsequent seasons too, I want more diversity in top 10 episode lists, Heaven Sent, Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead, Blink and World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls are still dominating them (guess who wrote those).

I think Moffat worked better under Russel and his episodes were quite good and when he took over as showrunner he was still good just more hit and miss. People who are moaning about him coming back its not exactly unheard of especially looking at Classic Who where a lot of old writers came back and nobody moans about that in retrospect

I think it's fairly apparent from viewer counts that seasons 11 to 13 something was going wrong with the show. They're the only seasons that really didn't grab me. I think Chibnall has a well deserved reputation by now, his episodes seem to be the least watched or some of the lowest rated out of all of New Who. I think they need to return to different showrunners and writers to try to get the series back on track. Maybe Chibnall isn't entirely to blame for the rating losses, but it's fairly clear that they need to try something or someone else if they want to return to the success of previous seasons.

RTD and Steven Moffat are the best writers of the modern series, RTD worked best as show runner, and Moffat worked best as guest writer, by replicating that formula that had proven to be successful and using the best and most experience writers on the show, will lead to the best outcome. If you have the best writers at your disposal then you use them, you do not hire an all new team just for the sake of renewal, look how that turned out with the Chibnal era, a crappy show runner, with crappy writers. If the best writers are willing to come back, then you bloody well utilise them.
