Released in late 2008 from DICE, Mirror's Edge comes at an interesting time in the industry - with rising team sizes and development costs, publishers and studios were becoming more risk averse. It's funny that around this time, EA of all companies was pushing for more original IPs and not be so reliant on licensing...although that didn't last too long.
From its unique parkour 1st person based movement, simplistic and memorable art direction, minimal hud and high levels of immersion, Mirror's Edge still stands as a unique title that's rarely been done since, and marks an unfortunate time when the larger publishers moved away from titles that took risks.
This Mirror's Edge review/analysis/critique/retrospective will look at how Mirror's Edge came together, how the presentation of the game works to guide the player, the gameplay, flow in Mirror's Edge, the game's strengths and shortcomings, how it marks a point in the industry when larger publishers moved away from taking risks, and more.

I love that people are still talking about this game this many years later. I played it for the first time a couple of years ago and it was an incredible experience, it easily made to my list of favorite games. Amazing soundtrack and art direction with such a fun gameplay and a very refreshing presentation of a dystopian society. I think everything in the game helps to build a very interesting atmosphere. I was afraid Catalyst wouldn't stand up to the original but after playing it for a few hours I find it better, at least for the gameplay. I feel they were able to keep the same atmosphere, while expanding the world you are in and letting you explore it freely. The open world gives you the possibility to try countless paths to any point of the map, and discover the fastest one on your own, while also offering you the opportunity to just chill and enjoy the scenery if you want to. I think the idea of giving the player the opportunity to explore the city however you like, fits Mirror's Edge atmosphere perfectly and lets you enjoy it's movement system even more than the first title.

I definitely recommend giving Catalyst a shot too. It's not as good as the first game but still great. I'm not a fan of bloated open world games in general but I didn't mind it in Catalyst because, unlike most open world games, moving around the map and getting from point A to B is still fun. Unfortunately there is a skill tree system in place but you unlock all the key skills pretty quickly so it's not the end of the world. There's no gunplay anymore but the combat mechanics have had an overhaul, although annoyingly there is some sections that lock you in an arena and force you to fight. Story is okayish but presented much cleaner than the first game. Runner vision now has a guiding line showing the path players should go which is very disappointing but thankfully in the options you can set runner vision to 'classic'. The movement and exploration is still insanely good and that cliche flow, that we all love to talk about, is still very much there.

I replayed Catalyst last week for the first time since '16 and it is better than the first one in every way. The combat is great if you pay attention during the tutorials. It just makes me sad because there is so much more left in this universe that warrants a franchise.

  • @ajeje1996

Story was dogshit, though. Also I think the grappling hook mechanic was really cheap, especially considering the type of game Catalyst tried to be. If movement is supposed to be the main drive behind gameplay and a way for the player to express themselves, putting a mechanic that lets me (actually, forces me) to skip huge chunks of levels by simply pushing a button is a terrible idea. The game had a lot of potential, and in some ways it succeeded - the graphics and animations were really good, melee combat looked great (though it sadly lacked depth and got quite repetitive), and going open world was a good call, though personally I think it was still underdeveloped and could've been done much better. The setting was pretty generic as well, nothing that hadn't been done before, while in the original seeing a dystopia that looked so close to our actual world was refreshing. Personally I also liked it more in terms of looks, the graphics are dated but it still looks impressive because of the beautiful, striking art direction. One thing I did enjoy a lot, though it wasn't intended, was the bugs that allowed experienced players who had already mastered the movement to do some really insane stuff that allowed for a lot of freedom in exploration.

I remember reading one of the comics which set up Dogan (from 2 I think) and it talks about Faith being quite boisterous and trying to steal a painting from Dogan, and this painting was Faith's iconic tattoo from the first game. The 2nd game talks about it a bit, but the comics I think were meant for optional insight rather than an important piece for understanding. Great video, Boulder!

See, this is why artstyle and art direction is much better thing to focus over realistic graphics, because your game is gonna age and the realistic graphics aren't gonna hold up anymore, but if your game has great artstyle and art direction, it's still gonna look beautiful.

One of the reasons I went and got a 360, this game still holds up in exploration and platforming. So many different routes and areas you can climb to thinking you can't, this game has many of those blissful moments. Also, while not as good, I recommend Catalyst for the fact that they fleshed out the city more and is a fun sandbox to run around in with added missions and things to do.

I like how you need to look around the enviroment to see how to reach a certain point and even jumping need some space to be effective, you cannot jump from a standing point and jump as far. It's common nowadays to add very visible metroidvania paths, like very distinctive look of a wall where you can grab to, but i like to have the freedom to use a more open approach, it feels a bit more realistic too. I return from time to time in Mirror's Edge to experiment with the challenge levels. While in various situations the time is so tight i need to check some video and then try to do it myself i like that kind of mode. Even in Dying Light i like to do those challenges, try to find better paths to move around and so on. There's also a DLC where you need to do various "tests" one after another and get gear if you get further, i definitely would play a game if it was just that ;) Catalyst has a good OST too (same musicians), the openworld not much interesting and the "mission levels" have some interesting ideas but not all are that good, in my opinion. Worst having to unlock movements, you feel limited compared to the original and challenges in the openworld are deceiving because maybe you don't have yet the movement you need to use to complete some of them. Still, it's an interesting game.

I remember me and my sister being extremely hyped for this game when we were kids. We played it together and loved the experience. However, due to us being kids, there were more frustrating moments than satisfying, where we didn't know how to proceed. I also remembering being a bit disappointed that level design had several hard stops or slow-downs where ones momentum grinded to a halt. Although, the overall experience was great and memorable. The visual design is the thing that all these years later is the most striking.

Eidos Montreal should have grabbed features from Mirror's Edge and Dark Messiah to remake the original Thief trilogy (maintaining its briefing animations and excellent sound design) instead of whatever Thief 4 turned out to be. Free-running mainly to lose any guards on your tail, without runner vision/focus mode. Then once they proved themselves with the remakes respecting the original story, and ONLY then, could they maybe dabble in Thief 4 continuing the story from the new girl's perspective with Steven Russel as her mentor 15 years later. You know, sometimes I wonder... If Portal and Mirror's edge had a baby, would it be the greatest FP Puzzle Game ever, or did I have too much to drink today?

The exhilaration playing this back in the day, They distilled why it’s fun to be the prey in a scenario, No one wants to be it during tag, the fun is not in the chase, the fun is being chased, I even see this with the squirrels and rabbits when I take my dog for a walk, they tease my dog, they love to be chased, I’d rather be a deer than a wolf is what I learnt from that, The deer has a more fun life, and a quick death, The wolf has a pack for company, but it’s a cruel hierarchy, no quick death for the wolf either, they get old and starve slowly

Would love to see you do a video about Catalyst. I never finished it and I just really didn't get into it like I did the original, despite some obvious improvements to certain aspects. Maybe you'll be able to better determine what it does right and wrong, and why it couldn't attain classic status like its predecessor.

Hello, I'm just here to say hello and that after playing 70h of Death Stranding I conclude that different does not equate good cause everytime I get "This isn't so bad" thought playing it something breaks. Tho at least it has better writing than Mirrors Edge no matter how much of a non-accomplishment it is.

Catalyst is my favorite game ever and i was very sad when i finished it and found out that there's nothing else even remotly similar to this expirience. Not gameplay-wise (nothing wrong with it) but ah how do i describe it... idk this combination of utopiandisctopian city and OST is something else entirely.

I don't want you to have a predisposed opinion on catalyst, but I enjoyed it. It's basically more of the first one with an open world... The time trials and such are just littered through the world. As well as courier missions since Faith is a courier. They never really explored that in the first one.

I prefer the more grounded atmosphere of the first game. The world in ME always felt a bad decade or two away for me, while Catalyst gives off 22nd century vibes which just doesn't sit right with me for some reason. That's not Faith's world.

Mirror's Edge was really great game and so was the mobile version they made. I still remember playing it on my iPodTouch. I think I'll go and buy Catalyst now.

I disagree with you I liked the guns and combat in the game and hated that Catalyst took them out. The mix of parkour and gunplay is so fun. No I dont wanna do it in Titanfall or COD.

Definitely one of a kind, and that's even in comparison to Catalyst. It's also a beautiful game that I keep wanting to play again, but every time I play it again, I realise how much it hasn't aged well. It was definitely an innovator when it came to this kind of movement in a first person game, but in contrast to what has been done since, it is very clear how much this game feels like a bit of a prototype in certain fundamental ways. I'd love to see this game remastered with some quality of life and control updates.

It's painful watching you play this... You're not very good at it, especially the combat. Unfortunately Mirror's Edge is a game that is hard and clunky at first, but amazing once you get the hang of it. It's very easy and fun to go through the game using melee combat only, however you will need to know how to use it correctly. Your video shows you standing in place and absently punching enemies and then complaining that it's clunky and half-baked.

Objectively the original is better in terms of the flow of the parkour and art direction. Catalyst was just confusing with its story most of the time, the parkour felt kinda of cut in half i guess you could say (missing moves, loss of flow the original had, etc), and the art direction was completely thrown out. instead of a modern city paralleling the real world and its politics is more of a generic cyberpunk dystopia. A good game nonetheless but I cant go back to catalyst, meanwhile i play the original like every year.

Still have it on my desktop. This game is brilliantly put together. The rooftops and sky feel so alive, then comes the music to glue everything together, each sound tells a story.
