Why McLaren is replacing Vandoorne with Norris

Спорт

Following McLaren's announcement that Formula 2 racer Lando Norris will replace Stoffel Vandoorne in Formula 1 next season, Glenn Freeman is joined by F1 Editor Ben Anderson and F2 reporter Jack Benyon to look at the reasons behind the team's decision.
We discuss what makes Norris tick as a driver, the threat from a rival team that could have forced McLaren's hand, and if Vandoorne will find a lifeline on the F1 grid next year.

Thinh Nguyen yeah i watched the British gp today it was the first race i got to see live and i was actually really impressed with F1 i never found myself bored (other than the second safety car) but it was nice to see and i thought Lando did a very good job, he defended well enough to not be overtaken by Stroll and i didn’t see the Ric overtake but that was upsetting for me. he had a good finish, sad the way he got into 5th but i’m sure he’s okay with it

I don’t really know why everybody didn’t anticipate it. They were fighting in the upper midfield in 2014. Not like that was that insanely long ago at the time. They just had to get away from Honda, and they reverted back to the performance from 2014. Funny how all it took was literally any engine other than Honda. Shows that maybe there wasn’t that much wrong with the whole team during that Honda period. I think if Stoff and Fernando continued on for 2019, it would’ve still been just as good of a season.

    1. They have top notch facilities. 2. They have a budget to match. 3. Their main problem is organizational and once they have solved that they will come back. "How are McLaren in any position to do stuff like this with that lump of shit with wheels of car" Because the car don't matter. Stoffel simply doesn't match Alonso. Not even close. He needs to be if he's to have a future. When Button was Alonso's team mate in 2015 and 2016 the car wasn't good either but Button outscored Alonso in 2015 and outqualified Alonso from time to time. That's a Button in his final years with most of his motivation gone. Alonso was never a stellar qualifier either (37 first-rows in total isn't much to brag about) and Trulli often outqualified him at Renault. 16 out of his 22 poles were while he was driving for Renault too. So any young driver who doesn't get close to Alonso in qualifying will naturally suffer. Alonso has outqualified Vandoorne 14-0 this season. Ericsson has outqualified Leclerc 3 times. Brendon Hartley has outqualified Gasly 3 times too. The Toro Rosso, Sauber or Williams aren't particularly good cars. Sirotkin at least showed he had some raw talent by qualifying a bad Williams 13th and in the race he lapped faster than Daniel Ricciardo who won the race. Glimmers of promise in a bad car. We haven't seen that from Stoffel this season.

Watch this spot. According to Ferrari Alonso has a nasty habit of only setting the car up to HIS liking and thus developing a car just with characteristics that suit his driving style. That being said he doesn't develop the car to become *better* - which is why Ferrari went from 5 wins and a genuine shot at the title in 2010 to no wins in 2014 and hopelessly outmatched. Alonso was at Ferrari for five long seasons and the car only got worse. Had it been up to Ron Dennis Alonso would never have driven for McLaren again but Honda insisted they needed a "star driver" to head their return and since they agreed to pay his salary he complied. Without Alonso's salary and the money used to develop the car expect the team to do better.

@@paulallen8109 Oh okay, so because of one year where Ferrari went wrong with the engine because it was the start of the hibrid era, you're going to say that Alonso can't develop cars. Especially since from 2010 to 2013, the Ferrari was pretty competitive every year and Ferrari had a habit back then (and still do) of going backwards in the development race. Also we all know how he sets up his cars, but in preseason he doesn't push the chassis to be exactly how he wants it to be, he uses the tools available to set up his chassis to be understeery. And obviously Ron Dennis never wanted Alonso back because he didn't want someone that, if things went wrong, could ask questions and threaten his rule like in 2007. And don't use Alonso's salary as an excuse of why they're not competitive, especially because Honda are doing so well without him (NOT) and McLaren have written off this year to focus on 2019.

@@aidankeogh5350 Not true at all, because it was obvious that Ferrari were going to pick themselves up from 2015 onwards and upgrade because a team of their reputation can't afford to keep finishing 4th and being a laughing stock. And Ferrari didn't improve when Kimi arrived back in 2007, because by the end of 2006 Ferrari had the best car. And from 2007 onwards, they got past by McLaren in 2007-2008, Brawn Gp in 2009 and Red Bull towards the end of 2009-start of 2010, so Kimi isn't a great developer. Nor is Lewis, nor Vettel nor anyone. Drivers contribute in very marginal amounts to developing a car by giving them feedback of what's wrong with the car. If it is competitive, there's not much to tweak apart from set up or one two pieces of the chassis at most. And the differences reduce dramatically when you're comparing the best of your generation,so..

Big fan of Lando but a lack of tyre experience might shock him if Mclaren don't pull their finger out and work with him between now and Australia. Stoffel has the talent. Alonso is notoriously difficult to work with as a team mate and I would be shocked if he ever allowed Stoffel to be comfortable or get new parts on the car first. He's been an excellent 2nd driver and largely mistake free. Torro Rosso should look at him simply for his Honda experience and sign him up based on his consistency over Hartley. Stoffel & Hartley would be an excellent stop gap for Torro Rosso until their 12yo drivers are eligible for a superlicence.

Something his teamate still hasn't done (he's had 3 podiums at the same stage as Ocon's career. Magnussen can't stop getting into accidents and none of the drivers respect his antics on the track. And who considers Grosjean and Hulkenberg top drivers? Hamilton came in and immediately beat Alonso. He was obviously a keeper. And as for Kimi, never mind him now. He nearly won the title in his second season with McLaren aged 24. Then he was champion with Ferrari and won races for Lotus. He has nothing more to prove but still managed to put in the fastest lap in F1 history qualifying for the Italian GP.

Reading these hater comments I see why it bothered Lando at first but then turned his confusement, anger and disappointment into fuel to show them wrong, first win at the Miami GP on May 5th, then finishing just 3/4th a second from Max at Imola as heard in his team radio at the end that 'f'n hell he had to work for that', couldn't do much at Monaco, first starting 10 remained the same at the end lol... I'm looking forward to seeing what Canada does and the remainder of the season. Next season should be saucy with it being the last year of the current regs. Lando obviously sees something we don't to go ahead and re-sign 2 years before his contract is even up, but even he said he wanted to quash the red bull and other rumors for the teams sake, but did enjoy being linked to said teams, if only for a small amount of time. I like the loyalty he has towards the team and vice versa. He was able to shut his harshest critics, and I'm happy he was able to so quickly compared to others who currently aren't able to for whatever reason. This is what makes our sport so great! Lando is enjoying his life while writing mclarens come back story, that's still very much a work in progress, and what a *progress* it's been in just the last year with their new team principle, new driver, infrastructure, (wind tunnel), simulator, personnel, let alone the years he's been there already. But to be partnered with someone like Alonzo, probably on the short list of perhaps the greatest racers ever, is especially tough. It happens to a lot of young drivers today really, but I can’t help but feel like Stoffel was necessarily viewed through the harshest of prisms I can remember. Not having the quali numbers or finishing positions of Alonzo would be a chore for nearly anyone in the sport. Add to that the problem of ‘pay drivers’, etc., jockeying for a small number of seats & some great talent will most likely never get another shot. Well, that is, unless Daddy buys a Formula 1 team.

Ferrari had bad chassis with the cars being developed for his driving style in mind. They got from good, to decent to bad from 2010 to 2014. A lot of people are blind to the fact Alonso "develops" a car to fit his driving style alone but doesn't develop the car itself. With Ferrari's excellent reliability and Sebastian Vettel doing tons of costly mistakes at Red Bull (which he still does at Ferrari) Alonso appeared better than he really is. Sorry, but at any team Alonso has been at the cars have gotten worse. Renault went from 4th to 8th in 2008 and 2009 while he was there. Alonso is a development dead end for any team - and at McLaren he exacerbated their problems. If Sainz is more level-headed and hard-working expect him to do better.
