Why Dan Ticktum's F1 dream is OVER

Спорт

A controversial dude, for a number of reasons. But he's also damn fast, and was touted for success in Formula 1. So, why is the dream supposedly over? Or have I already answered that?

Yeah, I've never understood the hype behind him and why people talk about him being in F1. When has he ever achieved something to merit that? 2nd in the 2018 F3 season, sure, but that's literally it. Nothing else about his junior record is even close to impressive enough to warrant F1 speculation.

Definitely not as hot headed in Indycar. NASCAR hell yes. That Castroneves incident with Rossi is very uncommon (but Rossi's passive aggressive shot back at Castroneves was hilarious). The drivers never get really mad at each other. This season was probably the most times I've seen guys get mad at each other by far and it wasn't too bad. They don't wreck each other on purpose or hold grudges. Indycar also has Alex Palou who is the embodiment of the phrase "cool as a cucumber." The only time he ever got annoyed by anything was at Portland and he came back to win the race with a calm mind. He has the gorilla symbol for a reason.

His outbursts aren't comparable anyway. Everyone whines on the radio, that's correct, what's not correct is saying that the level on which he frequently attacks his own team is normal. If something goes wrong, it's never his fault. There's never any "we win as a team, lose as a team". It's only ever Dan wins, or the world fails him. With such a character he would never have succeeded in F1. That's not a question of politics, that's a question of your off-track capabilities. Modern F1 is too complex to "win" by sitting in a car being fast. You need to be able to work with people. He isn't.

@@_SpamMe I agree. The F1 grid has a lot more drivers to pick from, and would rather not risk having someone who's potentially a larger liability than the rest. Sure, some would say "shutting him up wouldn't be fun", but I'd say besides all the politics that are already built around F1; behavior like that just isn't going to be tolerated by the rest of the drivers either (let alone tolerated by the team he's in). Even if F1's all about the appearances and politics, it wouldn't be a smart move to make to get a driver who, sure, probably isn't showing an extreme amount of risk just yet, but unless he's an F3 Max-level prodigy, his F2 career just wouldn't cut it enough to make him worth any F1 seat. No team's gonna wanna risk having him on there with NASCAR-level attitude. Actually, you know what, he shouldn't be in F1. He should be in Indy or NASCAR lol.

I think he's very fortunate that he was allowed to get back in a racing car again after that, but he's certainly mellowed compared to what he was when he first came through. On a side note, he would hands down beat me in a racing car, but I beat him in a CoD game when we were on the same team, so who is the real winner?

Indy has really become a haven for F1 drivers who were determined to be “not good enough” based on everything but talent, and they have done really well. Romain killed it this year, Ericsson was in the championship battle late into the year, Rossi has done pretty decent, and the talent from non F1 drivers is there, like Herta and Palao. It’s nice to see Indy have a bit of a resurgence over the last 2-3 years.

they are all the same cars with a engine that has the same spec. But you have all the freedom in setting up the car. F1 teams spend millions per year to just find the right setup for each track. That has nothing to do with the car development. The same goes with f2. The top teams can spend more money for finding the right setup. And a good setup compared to a average setup can easily be 5 tenths in the very same car. And it seems like, that the distribution of the mechachrome engines isn't 100% fair either.

Yeah, they're spec and there's no development even if the engines are very uneven. Regional F3 though? Not spec in reality even if it usually is in practice. The chassis is, but if someone wants to spend the money to develop a car they can. Lance Stroll won his championships with a front suspension developed by Williams in the Williams F1 tunnel.

@@HeavyMetalGamingHD Well, the same can be said for any series that uses identical chassis and/or engine - the big teams with bigger budget and manpower will always find the edge compared to the competition. Case in point IndyCar. Many praise it for being a "series of equals" when in reality is not - since 2003 the champion has been from one of the Big 3 teams (Andretti, Ganassi and Penske). In the 2021 season the stranglehold of the Big 3 was still strong in terms of race wins - out of the 16 wins, 13 were from Andretti, Ganassi or Penske drivers. Only on 3 times that stranglehold was broken - at Texas' 2nd event by Pato O'Ward (Arrow SPM), Rinus VeeKay (Ed Carpenter Racing) at the GMR Grand Prix and the Indy Road Course, and Helio Castroneves (Meyer Shank Racing) at the Indy 500. This was done under Yuki having zero experience with F3 while Dan was leading the F3 championship. The clear difference in the potential made the resource concentration switch on Yuki. (This result is Dan running SF and Yuki running in the smallest F3 team). From that point, it is clear that his hope for F1 is half or almost gone. This news was kind of spread around Japanese motorsports media but has not been seen on the Western side so I think it will give more insight into what happened to the Redbull Junior at that time. Here is my take, a relatively new formula 1 fan. To drive at F1 you need 3 major characteristics: Money, Reputation, and Talent Some lean heavily on one while most try to balance out things. Hamilton came through into F1 with the sheer talent while Mazapin came in with buckets load of money, while people like Stroll, Parez, and most drives balance between these three. Ticktum doesnt seem to have massive backing, his reputation started out negative and when media is lacking a bad guy, Ticktum was a treat on a platter. While I haven't watched any of his performance, the community response is he has talent but not the next WC. So in aggregate, 0 for money, -0.5 for reputation, and 0.8 for talent = 0.3. Which is I guess meh for most teams. While Stroll would be 1 for money, 0 for reputation, and 0.6 for talent = 1.6. From an emotionless corporate outlook, I would pick Stroll over Ticktum if they were the choice I am presented with.

The real you is defined by what you do and what you say. He has done and said awful things, and until he stops doing them when the opportunities arise, that's what he will be defined by. I'd rather have Kyle Kirkwood, who's smashing it in Indy Lights, over Dick Tantrum and I bet that Kirkwood will mop the floor with him. And TBH I have a problem with IndyCar and the teams' driver selection policy - you have those drivers from Indy Lights that are no worse than the imported from elsewhere drivers (maybe are even better than some F2 and F3 drivers) and yet they choose the imports over the homegrown IL talents (American or otherwise)? Which is a shame, because these Indy Lights drivers want to be there and not just their "Plan B", because couldn't get to F1 due to some rich guy buying a seat for his spoiled kid. I read about Albon going to IndyCar, but that was if he failed to secure a F1 seat.

The dude has talent and hopefully driving in some other series, without being under the constant media spotlight of being potential pick for F1 team, allows him to mature as a driver and person while having successful racing career outside of F1.

I do think it's undeserved for someone to get hate and to be judged so harshly as a human by people who don't know him, sure. But, that still doesn't change our judgement towards him as a racing driver, and most of all; as an F1 seat contender. He still isn't fit for it, and anyone who's been that loose with their public image (and therefore arguably; someone who's been that loose with their personality) isn't going to do well in F1.

A couple of years out of single-seaters and into touring cars, endurance or rally might help him. In the junior formulas, everyone is rash and inexperienced and there will be lots of contact. If that doesn't work, he appears to have the perfect temperament to be a male model.

It's always a little sad when these guys shut off their options for a shot in a series that barely has a 20 car field, has consistently proven that at least 25% of its seats are full of drivers who aren't championship winning material, AND hasn't been competitive until this season of the hybrid era

What team principal said something along the lines of "I prefer an unruly fast driver over a slow nice guy, because you can tame the wild one, but the slow guy will never be fast."? EDIT: This is not a defence of Tictum, just a thought. At times I felt sorry for him, some other time I was all "He got what he deserved." In the end, it doesn't even matter. Had he behaved himself just a bit more, we could have had another Montoya in F1. Oh well.

I think there's something to be said about the current path into F1 bringing people up before they are mature enough, either personally or skill wise. It seems like it's designed to have you peak at F2 in your late/teens very early 20s, and then - nothing? A 20 year old F1 driver used to not exist, yet it seems everyone is looking for the next Max Verstappen - and even he has taken many years of having the pace to be mentally ready to fight for a title.

I think there's probably a larger multitude of factors now that affect who gets a seat in F1, less so than the factors that affect who stays. I'm not sure (I literally do not have any knowledge to back this up), but I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out that F1 from 2018-2022 has had the most amount of pay drivers than before (thus showing that F1 had been in need of secure backing either by experienced drivers who were known to win, or by new drivers who had bucketloads of money and sponsors, of which there don't tend to be an F2 grid's worth of). Plus, I just think F1's starting to be a lot more lean on taking on new drivers. Sure, we took on a few just this year, and by 2026 we're likely seeing Lewis, Alonso, and perhaps Bottas retire at their age (maybe, maybe not) so we're probably expecting a definite need for new drivers anyways. Overall, I think the main reason that the jump between F2 and F1 has been so uncertain now is ultimately because entry into F1 has been a lot more variable, due to the need for more sponsor-backed drivers, and the lack of open seats (with more teams preferring to simply keep what's working, or upgrade). Maybe those factors have stayed the same all this time and there's really no difference hence I shouldn't be trying to pinpoint the reason as to why we're observing a long lead time between F2 and F1, but eh, my best guess is yours. Edit: I wouldn't be surprised if the 2020's ushers two seasons of having no new drivers from F2 coming into F1, post-2023 but pre-2026.

@@hamingnu6610 Nothing this century compares to the pay drivers of the late 80s and 90s. Especially when there were 36 entries in the 80s and we had pre-quali. You could still buy an old car off a team and run it yourself back then. Agree we're probably going to see a no-rookie season in the next decade.
