Why Max Verstappen Didn’t Get A Penalty For His Grid Box Position

Спорт

The last three races have seen drivers having issues with their Grid Box positions, starting with Esteban Ocon then Fernando Alonso, which prompted the FIA to make the painting grid positions larger.
But viewers spotted Max Verstappen at the Australian Grand Prix almost out of his position, but yet no penalty - here's the reason why.

It's always funny to me when Verstappen is on the exact edge (in this case literally) of the rules, to great risk of penalty to himself, and just nails it, yet people start yelling it's unfair. Verstappen is the catalyst for a couple of rule changes in F1, which is a testament to his skill in driving at the absolute limit of the rules, NOT unfair conduct.

Most funny one to me is the one how he did like driving next to them (mostly hamilton but there are also once with leclerc) before restart with a safety car... that they are now not allowed driving next to each other anymore. It gave him most of the time a disadvantage, but more get into there heads then anything. But for sure there are tons of examples of rule changes due to Max.

Yea it's funny but also kind of sad because in any other case this would be applauded as impeccable execution, high risk/high reward in the heat of battle. He gained an advantage on merit and won the restart against the better starting mercedes. That moment could have won the race if the accidents happened a sector later. A pretty toxic part of his job environment if you ask me having to deal with as much stirred up bs from media and fans.

That said if a driver picked up a penalty for a minuscule mistake after a race RE-START that didn't have anything to do with him how unfair would that have been? People have to be reminded that F1 cars have a front blind spot of about 100m, meaning they can't see anything clearly unless it's 100m away from them. This was demonstrated on a video the official F1 channel made on cockpits some time ago. Considering that yellow line was painted there so drivers could see where to align their cars, it would make sense for them to err in the side of caution and try to place their front tires on it as it's easier for them to gauge that distance from the cockpit.

It's so marginal that I'm not for penalties for starts and restarts but for the FIA to EDUCATE! Clearly, they're failing to educate as drivers aren't sure where they're supposed to start and what the restart rules are as Verstappen was quoting rules that weren't being followed which he was incorrect. His race director didn't correct him so that means they didn't know either. Worse of all, we the fans aren't sure so that hurts the legitimacy of the sport. Long delay in penalty and how they're communicated has been an absolute mess. To me, that tells me that those in high positions don't know what they should know. This season, the only thing that has been clear is that the FIA doesn't even know what their rules are.

Max's tire does not touch the ground outside the white box line. Alonso's tire (because the tire is a tire and not a ball) touches the ground outside the box lines. The tires are round from front to back (you can easily roll them forward and backward), but they have a running surface that is quite wide across the width of the tire (you can't roll an F1 tire sideways, it will fall over) , so that you can stand on the side of the line, while your tire also has contact with the ground outside the box lines. So max's tires didn't touch the ground outside the box, no penalty. Alonso's tire hits the ground outside the box, penalty (unfortunately).

the rule basically says any part of the wheels touching the outside of the box will result in a penalty. which means max didn't break the rules since his tires were only touching the white line . on the other hand Alonso's wheels were partially outside of the box and that's why he got the penalty. everyone can take the risk and do what max did but teams tend to play it safe. and the reason why cars can't be too far left/right is for safety reasons. there must be enough space between cars and the track limit so that in case if someone is unable to move the other drivers can go around safely.

I guess you need to add some kind of limit angle wise, or maybe decrease the angle after each group of 4 starters or something, but if I’m on pole and there is obviously more traction in one area to the left, or I have a better start by starting on an angle, well, I put it in pole, it should be my call.

In fact, Ocon admitted after the penalty in the first race “I’ve also been doing the same thing for the start position and all the way through last year I never had a penalty, so all these things are new apparently".
