Why locals HATE expats (and why they shouldn't)
In this video, I want to explore the reasons why some locals may hate expats. While living as an expat in a new country can be an exciting and enriching experience, it's important to be aware of the potential challenges and cultural differences that may arise. Whether you're an expat looking to better integrate into your new community or a local seeking to better understand the perspectives of your expat neighbors, this video offers valuable insights and food for thought.

Hi Julia, nowadays a popular destination to live in a cheaper way is Medellin, Colombia. But it causes a problem called gentrification, For foreigner people the cost of life is so cheaper, but for the local people it is a huge problem because foreigners increase the cost of the rent a lot, arround 200% in the last year.

@@ThisisYulia you are turbocharging prices where you go. It's not "everywhere" the same, where a place is hyped up, like Lisbon...locals in big trouble, I wonder if white rich immigrants have something to do with it ...
This RESPECT thing is sick. It's so easily converted into the "get out of our country" thing in every argument with the locals.

Just because facts? It's like climate change denying not recognising white rich immigrants price out locals...you as part of the expat mass are highly likely to have a negative impact on the society you live
Thanks for the video. I think your perspective was mainly based on the profile of white immigrants who are wealthy enough back in their home countries. However, I want to bring to the conversation immigrants like farm workers or general laborers from poor/less developed countries. I've met many Mexicans who work their asses off here in canada, working at nurseries, greenhouses, farms, etc. I know that people look down at them, and I even heard some cases of abuse that even reached court. These workers keep the industries running with all the hours and hard work they put in, we should be thankful for that! Also, I've met some asylum seekers from Africa, which also have a very hard time here with discrimination, even though they are also really hard workers. My point is: lets remember that not all immigrants are white, wealthy, or highly educated, but they are still valuable humans, and they have hopes and dreams like everyone else.

Love that you're talking about this, Yulia!! I don't think it's difficult to understand that expats are simply looking for a better life. However, I can understand the local's frustration when it comes to things like expats not even trying to learn the language or not respecting the culture.... But if there was an opportunity in my home country for expats to come and live a better life and they're doing so in a legal and respectful way, then by all means!

No one has the right to just pack and and move to any country they feel like, and no country has the obligation to let anyone in. If you move to another country be thankful instead of thinking you are entitled to be there.

I'm a Canadian immigrant living in Portugal. Canada has about 500,000 Portuguese immigrants. So the immigration flows both ways. I appreciate the mutual acceptance on both sides of the Atlantic.

Very good presentation about the presence of immigrants in they adopted country. Tough and humiliating when hearing negative comments when you’re trying to be respective and law abiding as an immigrant.
Throughout history, humans have always migrated from one place to another, so it's not something unique to our time. The practice of blaming immigrants for the economic and political issues facing their host countries is a form of scapegoating by the local population. Thanks for the video Yulia :)

Never in the history of humans as it been so easy and fast to migrate to other places and in such huge numbers as it is now, so no, it's not the same thing.
As an expat living in a different country for the past 2 years, I've heard on various occasion to go back to my country, i just chalk it up to them being miserable or other factors because I offer no negative contribution to this country, then on the other hand, you have the tourists who visit here and usually assume I'm from here. 😂
Yulia, you are 100% right, as usual. I see these Americans, some have been there for years already, are not going to learn the language. There are not interested, which I think is a bit unfair. Learning the language and the culture is a sign of respect. Obrigado pelo video.

Hi Yulia! Thank you for sharing your experience. Honestly, I cannot even imagine 2500 euro-rent in Lisbon😳It's insane for both expats and locals. We moved to New Zealand and haven't seen any rudeness from locals. Maybe the reason is that many of them are former immigrants. At the same time, the prices are not increasing extremely fast for them, and immigrants are a kind of cheap workforce.

YOUR Video ... That's the point . maybe sometimes local people can't understand our reasons in real , due to they actually don't even imagine how is goin on in our countries ( like Iran ) , how it could be hard for us as a human ... in fact you mentioned some couses of immigration but we have all of the reasons in 1 situation in Iran , so ... what can we do for ourselves !!!! except immigration 😭😭😭 so we have only and only one way ( if we can ofcours )
You guys are inmigrants, not "expats"
The real problem are not immigrants the real problem is rich people buying houses as a mean to make more money driving up the prices, people owing three houses to list on Airbnb that’s the real problem
@TheMountainBeyondTheWoods

The real problem is a combination of several things. Part of the problem is what you correctly pointed out, but allowing huge numbers of people to move in is also a big problem, if you don't see that you're either lying or are way too naive.
Expats? The right word is Immigrants.
like everyone else we’re just looking for a better place to live! It’s ridiculous to feel guilty just because you came from a wealthier country, we literally bust our asses to achieve a higher income! it’s not like someone from the government came to us and made us a millionaires lol

So you are entitled to go wherever, whenever you want. That's the expat vibe and that's the reason why locals love you XD. That lazy ass locals, go teach them!XDDD You are SOOOOO hilariously expat
"EXPATS" Ok immigrant😂
- Expats should not be hated! *Proceeds to tell a whole list of reasons on why to hate expats* xd Now, seriously, I think you mixed up the term expat and immigrant. Your "good" characteristics for expats are just the characteristics of immigrants. I don't think anyone would complain of an English comming to Spain, opening their bussiness, learning Spanish, and integrating into the community. That's what you'd call an immigrant. The problem comes when the expat comes. The digital nomad that only gets lunch at the only-English speaking, expat/tourist oriented "brunch restaurant", only talks with other expats, and doesn't even create jobs or pay that much taxes. All things you also admitted to be red flags. Although the dictionary says expat and immigrant are synonyms, no one here uses these words as such, but as I've described up here. That's the reason of all the hate towards expats, at least where I live. Hope I could clarify a bit the terms and explained myself well, have a great day! :)
