I have taken up photography again from my college days where I worked at the photo lab of my art & design school, and I’ve been emulating your workflow and implementing your tips on how to get good exposure, where to find good light and to strive for character in the work. I gravitate toward your portraiture. I’ve started with natural light outside. I’m glad the less techie and more artistic of us have you to learn from. You are unique in the KZread space because you teach art with photography as your medium rather than just photography. And when you do get techie it’s easy to follow. Thanks again. My wife’s grandad had a Leica M3, he used it to take some pictures at our wedding. His pictures were far superior to the ones provided by our “professional” wedding photographer!

Nicely put, Peter. I absolutely adore shooting film on my Leica M3s (both a double stroke 1954 and a single stroke 1964) with their vintage lenses. My favorites are the pre-ASPH Summicron 90 and the pre-ASPH Summilux 50. Meeting you (and Bec) and getting to shoot with your guidance on the streets of Geneva last year was great fun. I'm still working on setting aside other people's opinions and really getting behind my own art. Your generous tutelage and your example as a successful pro are inspiring and appreciated. I look forward to seeing you again in the future.

This is a respectable overview and really authentic. Great to hear the view of a senior expert. Just switched to the X2D and like it but am not amazed by it. Probably I expected too much. Overall, the key message for me is: There is probably not „one camera to rule them all“ and the choice can be a very personal one. The output is what matters. Would love to shoot on an H6D some time… Thanks for putting the effort into such videos. You have one more follower now ;-) Cheers from Berlin!

Hi Peter, trust all is well. H6D’s do come onto the market occasionally. Hasselblad worldwide buy and sell, buy and sell on the Hasselblad forum, and I did manage to acquire a low count body and lens locally on gumtree last year at a decent price. The 16-32 film backs are now going for approx $1,500 usd 😮, and in demand with the resurgence in film. Shame Fuji discontinued the FP-100C peel apart Polaroid film. There’s a guy in Germany ( Han Chen) that’s doing instax Polaroid square backs for Hasselblad 500 series and Mamiya RB/RZ’s.

That Polaroid camera backer, is a unseen before, way of obtaining instant pictures. Using Polaroid branded cameras, was the only way I knew of, to take those self developing pictures. Thanks for explaining more about cameras.

I was so surprised to hear that ' Hasselblad ' no longer provide support for a top of the line Pro camera such as H6. I don't know when this happened, but without trying to be controversial, Hasselblad ceased to be Hasselblad when a Chinese stabliser manufacturer DJI, aquired majority shares in the company. I still have my 500CM , and 503 ELX plus the Leica trio of M2, M3 and M6. Good of you to let your views be known.

I don’t know. Hasselblad seems more Hasselblad to me since DJI. They seem to have more independence now than under Shriro group. They have had various foreign owners since the 1990s and Hasselblad hasn’t been owned by Hasselblad since the 1970s.

@@tor2919 Thanks for the info, Peter. I didn't know they had been taken over before. If that company was Japanese, that would explain the swap from Zeiss to Fuji for the lenses.

Can't really justify/afford more than one system, but I'm happy with my Sony cameras and lenses. The old mechanical cameras are so cool. Sort of like old precise mechanical watches. I always liked the old Hasselblad ad showing how horse hair, rice, etc. were used in making the camera.

I just got my new Lumix S5II with the new L2 technology developed by Panasonic and Leica and is L mount and love it and will be getting some SL lenses for it. I'm all in on the Leica L mount just with panasonic with the new hybrid phase detect autofocus.

Looks like a great camera

I can't believe that Hasselblad have ditched their loyal H-series users. I love my H6 and prior to that my H4 and H3D2. I can't believe that they have ceased servicing and repair of these cameras. What most of us probably viewed as a life-long investment, has turned into so much junk should they malfunction or break. Way to go Hasselblad..never again will I invest in any system that they bring to market. It's not as if their equipment was inexpensive. Thanks for highlighting all of this Peter. I just had my H6D serviced last month and confirmed with Hasselblad customer service that they're still servicing the H cameras. You shouldn't make public statements when you have no proof of what you're talking about.

@@infox6671 I had both my H6D-50c cameras repaired in December, I was told this that this might be the last time they can repair the 50c backs as they have very little spare parts for that back. I made a phone call yesterday and was told the same thing. PS I said my cameras H6D 50c they are still selling X Demo models of the H6D 100c

I was recently stunned that Hasselblad had no fast response or solution for my H5D-40 CCD sensor that has a 1 pixel corruption line across it. Took them 3 weeks to say that they found a loaner back. I the meantime I bought an X1Dii and am enjoying it. I am seriously thinking about a second as a backup (I really don't need the 100MP files size of the X2D). Hasselblad then told me there was a delay of at least a month (or more) if I wanted to send the 40 CCD to Sweden for repair. Claimed it was a shipping issue. I am heavily invested in H-System lenses, so I don't want to throw money away! I do love the X1Dii for the CMOS and live view (mostly a product/studio shooter).

@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer Yeah, I see that 100 MP models still out there, but dang they are not cheap! X1Dii was a good replacement for me.

Peter, see if you can source a Hasselblad Quick Focus Handle (40-80 CF Lenses Only) 51700. This item drastically speeds up using a 500 Series camera. The quick focus allows your left hand to support the camera and activate the shutter release button, whilst the right hand can activate focus and turn the "rapid" film wind. It's actually quite efficient in that configuration. And a PM or PME prism allows you to stabilize that camera to your eye and see a correct/upright image. The PME also features an EV meter reading which can be locked onto the lens with the cross-coupling button. Cheers!

Camera choices are always so interesting to hear. For medium format I use Fujifilm's GFX system and it is far and away my favorite way to shoot, and much more preferable the Hasselblad's stuff which I found clunky and annoying to use. I love Leica's stuff but for most work I end up doing, the bodies can't really keep up(typically weddings and such) so I've gone from Sony, whose bodies I dislike as far as usability goes, and moved to Canon R5 which I've been having a great experience with. I love Leica's Q cameras and of course the film cameras but I couldn't use them for WORK, just casual shooting. Which at that point begs the question, why not just use one of the smaller Fujifilm cameras that are 3/4 of the camera for 1/5 of the price? I guess most of this depends on budget, and I am not a wealthy person, lol. At the end of the day I kind of view Leica's more like jewelry rather than dependable cameras that I need to be a workhorse. Really hoping for a Q3 soon, though with maybe an updating lens.

So I understand that you use both Fuji GFX and Canon R5? Which for which purpose? I own Fuji GFX 50S as well as XT4 . Now thinking if upgrade to 100s for IBIS and faster AF or to switch to Canon R5? I tend to 100s. What is your experience and recommendation?

​@@christophsauer2857 So I was using the Fuji X system for both some light professional work(families/portraits/couple weddings, etc) but I found that I wanted more out of my system. Didn't NEED more, just had the funds and felt out the Canon R6/5 system and really liked them so I went into it pretty hard and sold most of my X system stuff. Moving from the Fuji X stuff to Canon R5 is a massive change of pace for me. The size is much larger which puts a lot of people off but it fits better in my large hands, which makes it more pleasant to work with. The glass is on a GFX level of quality and the body is just much more capable overall. Is it worth 3x the price for a body and 2x-4x the price for glass vs. the small Fujis? Only you can answer that for yourself. But the features of the Canon stuff and the glass is what got me there. I've also had the GFX 50R for about 4 years now and I've had the chance to use the 100 and the 100s. If all you are worried about is the best image quality with that medium format aesthetic, then any of the GFX cameras will be great. But even the newest bodies will absolutely not be shooting any type of sports/action/wildlife whatsoever. If someone is even walking at a brisk pace you may have trouble catching them in focus. The GFX stuff is really only usable with more or less stationary subjects. I still love my GFX and see no need to get the 100s(unless there's a substantial sale) and the quality out of the Canon R5 is amazing on it's own while affording me extreme focus speed and shutter speed. I'd say if you are 100% you do not need said focus/shutter speed, then GFX is a great system to be in. If you're ever going to need to be shooting moving subjects in any capacity, I'd go with Canon(or equivalent in other systems like Sony, but that's personal preference.)

@@christophsauer2857 My GFX certainly has a different "feel" to the photos vs. the R5. It's just that medium format look that we can all sort of notice. The R5 still has incredible image quality though and will not disappoint anyone.

Hi Peter, I'm glad to hear you're happy with the SL2. I'm curious why you only use it for natural/ambient light? I love mine for both studio and location, and now with the Profoto Connect Pro it *finally* has HSS/TTL. I'd love it if you did a video on how you set up your SL2 screens and buttons and why.

I love my Hasselblad H6D-50c for flash so I didn't buy my Leica for that, Give me a couple of months and I will do a video on How I set up my Leice SL2 and SL2s

I love my H6D-100c, pretty sad that DJI ended such a wonderful camera. I have been in touch with Hasselblad and at least they will still be doing repairs in Sweden but who knows what the spare parts situation is like. Really nice to see the Leica standing out. In the meantime, like you, I'll be cherishing my H6D's too :)

Never been able to afford hasselblad or leica a!l of my filmwork was with a Canon F1 or occasionally a cheap (back then) Yashicamat 124. I added a couple of Graflex Crown Graphics (4x5 and 2x3) and just a week ago, a poor man's m3, a Canon P with a 50f1.4. I'm looking forward to this spring when I get my first (very own) darkroom finished. I initially watched this when it first dropped. I'm sometimes slow to get on y-t.

I started using Hasselblad cameras over 30 years ago and still have my anniversary 500cm classic. I love the work you do with the H6 and at one time was contemplating getting one but now they are discontinued and parts are not available and the latest offering is only a shadow of the H6 camera so I think I'll just have to look elsewhere and leave digital medium format on the shelf for the time being. The Leica SL2 is a really interesting proposition for it's viewfinder and the choice of lenses coupled with in-body image stabilization. I think I'll wait for the moment to see what Leica will offer with the SL3 and then decide. Best Regards to you and Bec.

To be honest this was interesting bit of news on H6D and repairs. Considering Hassy is selling them on their webpage and dealers sell them and there is not a single beep about them being discontinued Seems they went to mirrorless market and left the big boy toys to phase one only. But nevertheless it is good to know (not that its good news but it is good to know) that Hassy wont service H6 anymore.

It is so annoying when a manufacturer discontinues a system you have come to love/depend on, it's why I keep buying Nikon D700 bodies, I'm basically stockpiling them so I can continue to use what I love into the future, I'm just lucky a) They can be picked up relatively cheap, b) They are so well built they tend to last well past their expected shutter count. Unfortunately I don't think the option of stockpiling Hasselblad's is a realistic option due to their price and scarcity :(

While I wouldn't call it, "stockpiling"........I have purchased a second Pentax 67, Nikon F2AS, and third Nikon D3 for the exact same reasons you provided.

Oh dear that’s a bummer. I agree with you regarding XD1, but the X2D is a different beast, my only minor criticism was the spring loaded door that covered the connectors, a sliding door would be far better. X2D has a far better quality feel to it. It definitely worth a closer look?

I guess the biggest issue for Pete perhaps is the lack of 1: focus peaking 2:live histogram 3:no zebra/highlight warning in live view ( from watching hours of Pete's vidoes ) Also speaking for myself as a current user of X2D... there are many cases that you have no rooms for errors and the lack of above features make X2D not a reliable tool. It only has histogram and highlight warning(extremely annoying one) when you view the images. If you work in very slow / own pace OR you don't work with it, it's fine. Tbh the firmware is worse than the X1D in terms of features. Unless they update the firmwares, I don't recommend it for the current state. Hope this helps.

Besides, it is also the true medium format, whereas the sensors in the X and V system as well as in the GFX models are kinda crop medium format. - I never could use an H system yet, how good does that True Focus feature work?

I still think the Leica SL2 is an amazing camera system, I just wish I could afford it, and then Justify it for the part-time shooting I do. I am feeling the itch to get another 35mm film rig. When I was in my 20's (a long time ago) I shot a Canon A-1 for a few years before switching to the Olympus OM-1 for the Zuiko glass and the Leica like build quality and size. I always found the Olympus to be plenty durable enough for field use and studio work and the Zuiko glass I would put up against any of the Japanese photgraphy manufacturer's lenses, and even some of the European optics. I have an Olympus OM-D EM-5 with a few lenses now, so I'll likely stick with Olympus in getting a 35MM SLR (Yup, another OM-1) and I had been looking at the Sigma Quattro H medium format digital but I might hold back for a few months to see what happens with pricing, especially on the lenses. Hasselblad H6 was my favorite camera! I was forced to sell it since Hasselblad discontinued service and service for this camera it ridiculous ! Hasselblad X1d is nice but found it slow shooting portraits and I need a min shutter speed of 1/200th or increase iso to get shoot sharp pictures.Hand holding it in low light is a lost cause so I purchased a Leica Q and SL which seems to be fine for now . I am also going back to film Hasselblads and large format cameras!

Each to their own 🤷🏻‍♂️ I couldn’t personally work with 4 systems, batteries, accessories, lens mounts, menu and control layouts, processing software. Surely one or two systems can cover all these niches? I struggle picking up my old canon 5Ds’s since I’ve switched to the Fuji GFX. My muscle memory keeps throwing me. Honestly you’ve impressed that you can switch between them so effortlessly especially in a high pace scenario. Much more adaptable than I am!

Hi Peter. Very interesting video. Do you perhaps find the Nikon or Canon mirrorless imagery more palatable than the Sony? Also with the Leica SL2 you mention excellent functional reasons to use it but what about the image quality. Thank you.

Good information as always Peter. I still have my Hasselblad H5D 40 in mint condition, I can't push myself to part with it. I brought it back around 2017 brand new. What I am sad about is for what I paid for it back then (Around $18-20K) with the 82/120 lens if I where to get around $ 10K today for it I would be lucky :( On Bay I see them for around $5-7K. The H6D had just come out right after the I brought the H5D, I was a little upset about that. My friends keep telling me to sell it but to me it's still an outstanding camera and getting another Hasselblad is not cheap . I do have other camera's such as Fuji, Nikon, Canon, Sony and Mamiya etc. I am like you the right camera for the job. I still see a few H6D's for sale on line but over priced to me. I also still shoot film, still nothing like it. I am very thankful to have legendary photographers as very close friends. And one of them was Mary Ellen Mark (RIP) who was a big Leica user. And for a long time she stuck to film, she would tell me "Analog Baby". Leica is about the only camera I don't own (On my bucket list). I really have gravitated towards Fuji, I have the Fuji H1 I have been shooting with for some time as a entry point into the Fuji system, thinking about getting a Fuji GFX. But I do prefer a Hassey or Phase One, they are more the type of medium format camera for my tase but they cost $$$ :(

Go for the GFX system for digital MF....you won't regret it...especially since the GFX 100S came out...that's pretty much at the price of good Full Frame digitals are at....and the IBIS in it really makes shooting a breeze with that large sensor. Fuji glass is great too, although I have fun playing with adapting old glass to it....fun to put a Hassy 500 era lens on the new GFX...with a speed booster adapter...wow.

@@chilecayenne All my friends suggested the same thing, and it's on my mind :) What I have a problem with is how much I paid for the camera at the time :( I can't get nowhere near for what I paid for it now :( If I only knew. And the Hassey it true medium format, I know that's up for debate and lastly I would never get another Hessy on same level again because how expensive they are. Have you seen the cost of the Hassey 100 MP and agreed the question is do I need such a camera. Listen in reality I know your right in the long run I know the GFX is a more updated camera with better features per say. I go through my mind on this everyday, Look I still shoot with my Nikon D3/D4, Canon 5D/7D etc I just love shooting. So I am debating about keeping the Hassey H5D and just but a GFX.

Thank you, Mr. Coulson! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this! I am going to guess that 99% of the people watching your videos (are like me, and do NOT earn a full-time living making photographs). I type that because.........too many professional photographers act like "gear" does not matter. I think Leica, Hasselblad, Sinar, Toyo, Phase One, etc. would vigorously challenge that notion. I LOVE hearing a professional photographer talk about his, "favorite" camera, as opposed to those who are dispassionate about cameras and commodify them. I would think that the "right" tool fits your hands perfectly, becomes an extension of yourself, and makes it easier to do your job, not to mention a specific lens lineup and, (with digital), the photographer liking the IQ/color palette of a specific manufacturer. Doubt you will see this however, I am curious about your feelings toward film? For instance, do you ever shoot it for your own special projects or, in your limited free time just for fun?

GFX100 makes cropping easy and is great for really large prints and archival photography but it’s overkill for most cases when shooting a model.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I have H5D-60. And X1D2. What puts you off with regards to X2D? Also, with H5D, I see Polaroid back, only part of it is used for the image. So, haven't been using it. Is it the same with H6D? I still see film and Polaroid backs available on eBay every so often.

I don't like talking bad about gear, but the things I didn't like about it outweigh the things I did like, there will be people out there that will love it it's just not for me.

I bought a bronica 6x7 because it was less expensive than hassie 15 years ago. last time i used it a spent a moment looking for the histogram button.

Hello Peter I work for the Hasselblad’s Italian distributor and I can assure you that you can repair it in Europe, you’ll be able to do it for at least 5 years, they are still repairing H4D cameras (introduced in 2010).

sorry I have to answer again, I have been an ambassador for Hasselblad for over 10 years. I was devastated when I was told by Hasselblad there is limited possibility of my Hasselblad 6D-50 C have been repaired in the future. I do not have any Ulterior motive to why I posted this, but I understand you as an hasselblad distributor are very protective of future sales of Hasselblad. I have just bought my third Hasselblad Hache 6D 50 C to Future Proof myself because it is my favourite camera in the world, and I'm devastated that I was told it may never be repaired.

@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer Dear Peter I don't know what happened between you and Hasselblad but everywhere in the world customers have support and even if a product goes "end of life" repairs will be guaranteed for some year also because there are laws that protect the customers. So our Italian customers don't have to look for spare camera, we'll sure repair their camera for 7 years. I'm not worried about Hasselblad's sales since the new X2D 100C is the best camera, by far, I have have seen in 23 years of my career and we are super happy about the sales.

@@gianlucaparodi So what happened between me and Hasselblad is I resigned as a Hasselblad ambassador when I was told by Hasselblad there is limited possibility of my Hasselblad 6D-50c digital back been repaired in the future. So are you saying you can Repair the H6D-50c digital back because Hasselblad has not answered my last email asking the same question, This seams the same as what they did with the Imacon flexcolor scanners

I found an m6 yesterday for less than 2000$, works flawlessly and is only cheap cause the previous owner put a ton of stickers and other pin like things on it. Still debating if i should just go get it or forget about it (also I mainly shoot MF…) what you think?

X2D is not the type of camera I enjoy using, but everyone has their own taste, so I suggest you just rent one for a day and then look at the images and decide if you like them or not.

That's pretty sad news to hear about Hasselblad killing the H6 camera (H-System in general). I heard this earlier in the year and dismissed it but now I believe it. I'm sure the 907X is next. I'm not the biggest fan of the X1D or X2D cameras, in fact I sold mine. I'd rather spend money on a Leica SL2 instead (if I needed a digital camera). Like you, I still use my Hasselblad film camera as well because I love the process of it all. Cheers!

You may have noticed that in the X2D presentation when they show all the cameras in Hasselblad history the H was not present. Hasselblad has become a company without a heart: the only reason to exist is to recover the investment and die. You may think that is to extreme, and you may be right, but there is no other way to justify that the X2D does not have a remote trigger or a GPS module. They not only remove the internal module but did not pay a programmer a few hours to make the old module compatible. It's SAD. I remember as if it was today the first time I saw through the viewfinder of the H4D with the100mm f2.2 . It was amazing, and the feel of the camera. So it seems to be a bygone era.

I mainly shoot fully manual and have set up my custom buttons and profiles, so I don't have to go into menu systems, but it did take a couple months to get all the cameras set up the way I need them too

After how long do Leica M cameras need calibration for rangefinder ?

@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer Agree - I've spent a fortune in our studio trying to get it right - even though the new XCD 2.5mm range - I had to wait two years for the 90mm and am still awaiting the 28mm -are pin sharp - I struggle with them - we run a Fuji GFX100II as well and its the same story - the lenses are terrific - the cameras are a horrible nightmare mish mash of things you don't need or worse things you've switched on but don't know how to turn them off or vice versa-- time for another Fuji/Hass collaboration? What was wrong with a Prism? It at least protects the sensor when gingerly changing lenses?

Curious why you don’t like the X2D. I loved the Leica SL2S I had, but it was too heavy for my liking for general photography. Not rich enough to keep it just for model work.

Why the lack of love for the X2D Peter? I understand the limitations of the X system versus the H for the work you do, but I can't see a downside over the X1s - better focusing and more resolution. I bought mine for the form factor because, outside of the leaf shutters, I have to admit that I think the Fuji GF is a better overall system for compact MF.

Hello Peter. Maybe you've already made a video, where you test photos with 4/3 cameras like Lumix G9 or similar. Yes, I know they are cameras not considered professional because they are not full frame, but consider one thing many of the people who follow you have 4/3 cameras and they would like to become as professional as you are but in the meantime, they are still with the entries level cameras and showing them that excellent results can be achieved even with a 4/3 camera will be appreciated by many from all over the world. If you have already made a video with 4/3 then I apologize if I missed it. If you haven't already then consider doing it it will be well appreciated.

How much does a camera's (or camera manufacture's ) color/image system come into account when choosing which to use? For example, I prefer Nikon's color science over my comrade's Canon in most situations, but his EOS's skin tones are hard to beat. Does that even come into your evaluation? I really like the idea of being able to use any lens ever made to get "the look". Cheers.

Hi Peter, I am curious to know whether you have ever considered moving to Phase One from Hasselblad. It is the only real medium format that is closest to the cameras and backs you have been using. Wondering why not make that switch. Much appreciated.

The new X series does not grab me, the H is discontinued, Fuji is well... Fuji and Phase I also find too clinical for portraits. I guess Leica it is then :) Almost tempted to buy and H6 and count my blessings with support...

The H6 is my favorite camera, it is very risky buying one because if you have any problems with the digital back you gant get it repaired, But Leica comes in as a close 2nd

@@vlcheish I prefer to shoot in colour and turn it to black and white myself so I have control over the toning of the photo, monochrome cameras just give you the one look

Just wondering, will Hasselblad discontinue the H-series or just the H6D-50c because of lack of spare parts? I’m currently using my H4D-50ccd. I love it. One day it may fail and then I want to upgrade since I have a set of beautiful HC lenses.

Having had two Leica cameras in my lifetime and many others. Even as a keen amateur, the quality of the photographs the camera and lenses took, were night and day, compared to other cameras. Sometimes, you couldn't put your finger on exactly why it was better, but Leica manage to sprinkle some fairy dust on most of the photographs I took at the time. Something that no other camera I've had since, has managed to do.

This was very interesting, have been thinking to buy either Leica SL or HD or XD Hasselblad to replace my corroded sensor Leica M9.

I find it unbelievalble that Hasselblat doesn't suooprt their expensive camera system for a longer time.

Great hearing your thought on gear Peter. Sorry to hear about the H6. I was wondering if you considered the Fuji GfX100s at all. It seems like a camera that might sit squarely between the Hassy and Leica SL, possible replacing the SL. Nothing can touch that M3, however. Perfection.
