We definitely need to bring in either Mainoo or Wharton to take the ball from the back four and play it forwards. If it's Mainoo his ability to get forward has two sides. It will make us more creative, but also more fragile. Having a rest defence of a 3 - 1 should be fine vs Slovakia, as it was against Slovenia, but against higher quality opposition, either Trippier will need to invert next to Rice, or leave Trippier at the back and have Stones step forward into midfield to make a far more secure 3 - 2 at the back. What this does mean is the front players will need to be more diligent in holding width on the left, as Trippier won't be able to do it, unless Bellingham drops in to cover him. This makes the case for Gordon stronger, but would mean dropping Foden, which seems crazy, but the balance of the team must come first imo. Foden and Palmer should be used from the 60 minute mark to make an impact. We have such a strong squad up front, it would be a mistake imo not to use it.

My only concern is, Pickford likes to play long. If he does that, Mainoo isn't someone who will be winning second balls.

Wharton would be more the Rice role, as he's more of a deep playmaker than a box to box presence

_Id personally prefer Wharton playing a Jorginho role next to rice._

I think Wharton should come in too.. maybe later in the game for Kobbie so he settles the game, sets a tempo and Kobbie gets some rest

The problem isn't Southgate starting Mainoo. The problem is Southgate using Mainoo the right way. Can Southgate use Mainoo's strengths to balance that midfield? I doubt it. He'll give him instructions to implement that don't get the best out of him. I really can't trust Southgate.
