I’m not sure why, but this film left me a little cold. I’ve seen it twice now, and while it is expertly crafted and there’s nothing practically wrong here, there’s just something that left unfulfilled. I think it’s largely the perspective. The Osage people feel less important as the film goes on, and Ernest, while interesting and bolstered by a good performance, seems as though he’s mostly portrayed as a bit dumb and easily manipulated. His chief contribution to the story is giving a testimony in the end. It’s also very sedate, and there’s no real catharsis. I don’t know how to explain it, but the film is very slow throughout the whole thing, rather than building and building like Scorsese usually does. I dunno. I can’t wait to watch it a third time come awards season. I’m hoping Scorsese’s able to use the same silver tongue he used on Netflix to get Criterion to release it or something. A lot of Scorsese’s films do improve upon reflection.

[Spoiler warning] @samualbarber6177 that reading definitely makes sense. Especially about the fact that the Osage perspective is not given enough importance. Given Martin Scorsesee isn't Osage, he probably felt like he wouldn't be able to do the story justice telling it from their perspective. It was originally going to be from the FBI's perspective, and he changed the story based on feedback from the Osage consultants. So he did the best he could as an "outsider" and told the story from that lens. The way I see it, Ernest is meant to represent the average person. He is easily manipulated without realising it. He thinks he's acting from a place of love, and maybe is to some degree. But is essentially very flawed and, when push comes to shove, acts in self interest. He's happy to testify against his uncle. But when he looks his wife in the eye he can't admit that he poisoned her. That's possibly being generous to Ernest, I haven't decided yet (I just watched it today). And that feeling of lack of catharsis is also possibly intentional. It's in the monologue at the end. The case, even though it was solved, was relatively unreported. Molly's obit didn't even mention the murders. Those are just my thoughts at least...

I'm a sensitive person but comedy being offensive doesn't bother me as much unless it's a joke that's not funny, which I can shrug off

The painful part of the film is seeing Earnest do these horrible acts to his family because you can def see that he has a good heart and loves the new family that he has made with Molly and the natives but has no backbone to stand against his uncle for do what he believes is morally right. When he confesses to everything I felt a huge weight come off me that he was finally doing the right thing but when his wife asked him about him poisoning her with the shots he was giving her, he denied it which broke my heart and emotionally crushing because he is too weak to tell the truth. Such a heartbreaking end because Earnest could not tell the woman he loved the whole truth which in the end destroys their entire love life. Pain all around.

What a fucking beautiful masterpiece this film was. The performances were jaw-dropping, the ending was… haunting, and the cinematography and cinematic feel was impeccable. Honestly surprised how fast the runtime went by. A sign of an incredible film.

This is a really good breakdown of the movie, the motivations and the Osages place in this film. Thank you. I'm Henry Roan's Great-Grandson who is murdered in this film.

i don’t even know where to begin with this film. i am a member of the choctaw nation of oklahoma (one of the 5 civilized tribes mentioned in the beginning of the movie). there are no words to describe the feelings i felt while watching this masterpiece. there were so many delicate touches to the movie that just made it feel like this was OUR story. there was the opening with the burying of the pipe (my tribe has a v similar tradition), the conversations happening completely in osage with no subtitles, the way my entire family quickly covered our eyes when the owl came on screen, the way the sister’s joked and gossiped in the native tongue, the silent, but communal mourning for those who have passed. while i have a couple of qualms with the movie’s direction, what i most appreciated was the nuance that was recognized by martin for problems that our community continues to fight against. things like alcoholism, diabetes, depression, suicide and violence against indigenous women. the film was obviously gorgeous and the performances were captivating, but it was the responsible storytelling that left me with tears in my eyes as an indigenous women. a truly impactful movie.

The film affected 18:20 me deeply as well.His pacing and dialogue (Hale points out that the Osage don’t like talking for talkings sake and I think the script followed that). It felt that he was trying to follow the Native American aesthetic.

This and Oppenheimer are my two favorites of the year. Another great video as welll

While this is a movie I will only sit through once and do think it needed an Intermission, this is a well made film from Scorsese, with great direction, writing and strong performances especially from Lily Gladstone. Not a Scorsese masterpiece, but it's a good enough Scorsese film that I did like

God this movie was insanely beautiful and haunting.

Yeah this movie is a masterpiece! Though not Scorsese's absolute best but definitely in the top 5. Though I will say I agree with Mama Geeky's criticism about the fact that the story should have been told in Mollie's perspective instead of Ernest's. But I'm kinda forgiving to that because a lot of times, Scorsese tells his story in the point of view of the antagonist as seen in films like Taxi Driver, The Departed, The Wolf of Wall Street, etc. But besides that nitpick, everything else is perfect. Even the runtime felt justified.

late to the party, but I think Scorsese very responsibly recognized it was not his place to tell a story from the perspective of a native woman, but a white colonizer/destroyer, which his ancestors very possibly could have been, and whose established systems he as a white man has definitely benefited from. telling the story from the perspective of the villains makes sure the white audience knows exactly what kind of folks built the systems we now live in.

Gonna watch this in its entirety in a few minutes when I settle down but keep doing what gives you passion man! This video isn’t going the hardest with views but keep scratching that itch!

Mollie Burkhart - at least in the film - also show agency by setting in motion the Federal cops' investigation into the murders. In doing so, she (in the film) sets in motion the downfall of her husband and his uncle.

When I watched this movie, it did not feel that long it felt like watching history. It was so brutal and honest with what happened.

I worked on this movie as a technical advisor and can confirm that every part of my work on this presentation required near perfection. Perfection and authenticity in set design and historical accuracy. Others, including the significant number of very capable crafts workers who contributed on set, were of the very best Calibur and worked very strenuously in committing to the demands of Scorsese's film making excellence. After seeing this film, the only recommendation would be that an intermission might have been warranted to refresh the viewing public for such an extravagant film making exercise. It is a story of depth and sober thought. It will be a classic.

Seeing the lack of views on this compared to… other reviews is very disappointing

This movie was extremely devastating, seeing the cleansing of natives in the interest of greed of the white man, yet I wanna watch it again, Lily Gladstone blew me away with just the way Mollie carries herself and how she is towards the end

Apart from having to pee for 1/3 of this film due to its very long run time, it was good

Another Marty's MASTERPIECE!!!! Need to watch again!!!! The runtime of KOTFM me and my girlfriend didn't feel at all,because we were so immersed in the narrative. And again, this movie shows why Martin Scorsese is one of the best directors alive

This film shows how evil, greedy, and terrifying us humans can become. Such a devastating tragedy, and it becomes even more horrifying when you remember that this actually happened. Such a well-crafted masterpiece from Mr. Scorsese.

You provide an interesting analysis. Scorsese shows how evil infects regular people. Most of the town knew what was going on and were complacent or enabled it. The pacing is meditative and allows the horror to slowly build. I think the radio program clashes with the narrative. Would have preferred that an elder speaks to young ones about what happened. Molly actually ended the guardianship law. That should be in the film. All in all I think the film was a masterpiece. Marty has a deep understanding of the human heart and it is often ugly.

How can the academy pick between this and Oppenheimer. 2 great films going head to head

It's going to be a tough one...L. Gladstone has an oscar-worthy performance, cinematography is on Killers' side, C.Murphy has an upper hand for best actor, directing 50%-50% chances, the best picture hm... slightly on Oppenheimer's side. Editing 50%-50%...We'll see, it's going to be a refreshing award ceremony I hope.

im late to the party, as i annually binge new films (end of the year) entertained but enraged this was somewhat a true story... 10/10

Thought ending was a letdown,overall not that great,good acting though all around.

I was so disappointed with Kermode’s review of this which wasn’t a review but him uncomfortable with the film’s subject, he casually and extremely briefly mentions white men doing something one of whom insists on being called Kjng and spends the majority of his “review” if you can call it that bemoaning the films run time. All while never mentioning this film is based on a true story and that there’s a book of the same name.

Movies like this speaks beautifully made movie speaks to why CRT is so important the harm that was and is being done to BIPOC people should never be forgotten

I just watched this movie today at the movies some hours ago today and found this, yeah, it's pretty good and really interesting, it's quite unique to see how you don't get bored in the whole run. I thought this was a fictional tale until the end, I was quite shocked. Crooks will always be crooks. Thanks for your thoughts on this

Leo should have been nominated I’ve never seen a more anxious person lie his way to extreme and he was a little to dumb to release what his uncle was making him due. He was a fool he should have had Bradley coopers nomination

This convinced me to see it a 5th time.

Such a beautiful movie! A little bit too long (maybe 15-20 minutes), but a great story, sublime cinematography, L.Gladstone's oscar worthy performance...We need more of these movies.

Bought this & Openhimer yesterday & it was worth the 45$ just buying it from KZread alone cuz these are both movies that get better after each viewing!!! The first time its good , the second it's better & by the third time u watch both films they become a drug almost because there's something more impressive every single time u watch both films!!! That line in that scene in this film when Brendan Fraiser says : "He is saving u!!!! Dumb boy!!!!" Is the best line in the entire film & there is so much going on in this entire film that is crazy but that scene is absolutely beyond crazy asf!!!!! I love how Brenden Frasier fell off in his career for so many years but then randomly pops up & challenges Leo in a "act off" challenge in that particular scene cuz they really do both play it so damn perfect together especially him being a dimwit in a room full of FreeMasons & Oil tycoons & Lawyers & Doctors & even the towns Sheriff & just people of power in general that are all showing him how easy hes really got it made in his life & that all he literally has to do is keep his mouth shut & he can go back to his family & yeah its funny cuz he still is too damn slow & stupid to understand anything they are telling him but regardless of him being technically a murderer & stupid & dumb asf , he's still literally the only person in that entire room with a damn conscience!!!! The scene is absolutely crazy good!!!!!! Please don't hate or be sensitive of everything that i mentioned above all the other more serious tones in this film cuz trust me , i literally felt alot of things in this film probably more than u did especially Mollys character , but the acting is everything i thought i had to start paying more attention to just to get my mind off of my personal torment!!!! I finally had to stop crying over this movie after the first few times watching it considering i actually lost my latin/native girlfriend from childhood Diabetes a few months ago !!!! I had to just stop crying at one point & start looking at the acting in the film just to take my mind off of it cuz the film is too on point with Mollys character in this movie to someone like myself & it was literally destroying me too much to even be able to watch this with anyone else & too many ppl wanted to really watch this film with me really bad so i literally had to watch it a few times by myself just to get past the personal tears before i felt like watching this with anyone else because its beyond hard having your real life love actually die from diabetes in real life & then seeing Mollys character arc regardless if she doesn't die in the movie or not , her acting was so on point especially when it came to her diabetes & sickness!!!! It was all the little suttle things she did that really fucked me up watching this film the first few times even over all the brutal murders & racism!!!! This movie is unfortunately personal for me in ways that it won't be for most others!!!!!

Could have been something greater. Continuity issues with dropped dialogue, wardrobe, foley sounds and not a memorable soundtrack. Felt rushed at the end. I wanted so much more from this film. The pacing was okay as it did not feel 3.5 hours. It fell flat for me as I did not feel there was a lack of dynamics in the film. Many scenes that dropped like a stone as well. Most of the movie, I felt held back of the true horrors of the Osage people. A miss for me.

Can youtubers stop with this "perfect", "masterpiece" crap already. It's a great film. There are lots of great films, there are, for good reason very few masterpieces. To qualify it has to be on the list of "greatest movies of all time" and as good as it is, it isn't. Fucking relax.

A masterpiece in being boring.

I think Scorsese had a lot of sensitivity to the fact that he, a white man who profits from systems of dominance that inherently give him power and opportunity, cannot tell the story of the Osage people from Mollie's perspective. I would love to see an indigenous director tell that story, but I think it was wise of Scorsese to relate himself and the white audience much more strongly to the villains by putting them in the "protagonist" slot.

I don’t think it’s as good as Oppenheimer though, while I do love the movie, but it feels too long. I don’t think this movie utilize its runtime well.

It was good I don't think it was a masterpiece the acting was excellent the story telling offered little to the imagination I don't like knowing what's going to happen before it happens it's like the movie spoiled it self I think it would have been better received through a different perspective maybe a detective or Molly trying to figure out who was killing the Osage.

Maybe with a different director. Scorsese does best with deeply flawed, usually despicable characters that have just enough humanity bleeding through that you desperately want to see them overcome their weaknesses. So in this story, I think Earnest was the perfect choice for him

watch out, opinion incoming: I see very obvious parallels to Tarantino. His latest outing had a massive runtime but where it was tolerable in the movie before (The Irishman / The Hateful Eight) it was almost unbearable here. A movie to stroke the directors ego. Is the audience enjoyoying it? "Who cares? This is MY epic story! I am a hollywood legend!" I watched Once upom a time in Hollywood once and didn't enjoy it. I won't ever watch it again. What a chore. Same here. Filmed like a fucking documentary half of the time and incredibly long for no reason. I'll take Goodfellas, Raging Bull and Taxi Driver ANY day before I'd watch this. I'd even prefer The Departed, Bringing out the dead, or Shutter Island to this three and a half hour """magnum opus"""".

I hated this movie. It was far too long for the limited story it had too tell. There weren't enough compelling characters, no tension over DiCaprio's decisions. I think there was a great movie to be made here (costumes, actors cinematography, budget, subject matter), but they just dropped the ball with a BORING film that went nowhere and stayed there.

Honestly, i did not like this. Let me preface this my saying Lily Gladstone waa fantastic and i hope she gets award recognition. The film looks beautiful of course and the other acting is suitably good. My issue is with how the story was told. It's supposed to be about the murders in the Osage nation, but they're background characters. It instead made the baffling choice to concentrate on the villains which is the expected earn their trust while killing them and siphon their money. Yes, that's been the motivation behind any colonial power (which yes this essentially is) for centuries. I know their motivation, and how there will be backstabbing and betrayal. That's been told many times. What i want, and what stories are most fascinating to me, is the perspective of the victims, and the impact it had on them. How was it so easy for Hale to gain their trust? What did they see in him? The film mostly concentrates on the death of Mollie's family, but while Gladstone portrayed the despair well i found the familial attachments weren't well established. I left not knowing much about the Osage history and culture beyond what some clunky exposition. Why did they need guardians? This is never explored. In essence, i don't want to know the story from the perspective of the villains, as that's boring. I want to know that of the victims, how they got to where they are, and why they apparently trusted these people. I want to know their side of the tale.

I wanted to know the story from the perspective of the Bob and Leos characters. They re the intresting ones. Sorry, but thats true. In Goodfellas the intresting characters are the gangsters.

Calling something, ANYTHING perfect: very, very bad start. Just silly. This film, whose length is absolutely not justified, isn't even in Scorsese's top 10.

It's not. DiCaprio is nearly 50 playing the part of a 26 year old. That mistake in casting means this film will not stand the test of time. Though there are no bad scenes in the film, there are no great scenes. It's beatifully shot but a story that could have been told in 2 hours and some change. Scorsese is one of the best ever but this movie is not.

That movie took place over 15 years. In Killers, Dicaprio is a doughboy returning from WWI. It just doesn't work. Plus, where are the great scenes? Goodfellas has over a dozen great scenes. @@dumpsta-divrr365

To tell a long and engaging story. Normally a very complex one. Thats why Oppenheimer, Titanic, Wolf of Wall Street, and even Schindler’s List are 3 hr+ movies. You get so much time with the characters and watching the plot unfold.
