Very funny to see the random people KZread sometimes pushes these videos to. By coincidence, the day before this video aired I was at the Delaware Drum Show and Keith Carlock did a clinic, the room was PACKED and of course his performance was exquisite. The convo over there on IG is filled with praise for his drumming when I shared a clip… Apparently KZread is showing my vids to all the grouches first ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ where am I, Reddit?

Reminds me of the story when Pat Methany first heard Antonio Sanchez. Apparently Methany commended Sanchez on how tight he was with his “percussion section”. Sanchez was like “what percussion section?”

Carlock is everyone's favorite, because he's doing what was mastered in the 70's and 80's by Colaiuta, Weckl, Gadd, Smith...the list goes on. He's solid, and has a great feel. Pro's hire drummers who are solid, and can groove....not rivet-heads showing the world how fast their feet are. The only thing that's "new" is what's now 2-generations of kids who have been conditioned to feel like they're not only special, but have something astonishing to say, simply because they own a camera and an internet connection. I can only hope I live long enough to see that trend go away.

Careful, do not over estimate this cat, he is just another "good" Drummer. There have been hundreds before him, there are hundreds at present time and there will be hundreds to come...His playing is nothing extraordinary. T. Williams, P. Collins, S. Gadd, B. Bruford, B. Rich, A. White, T. Gurtu, C. Cress, V. Colaiuta, M. Guiliana, N. Smith, A. Hoenig, C. Thompson, Z. Hussain, B. Wilson. B. Stewart, L. Bellson...Now those are (but) a few extraordinary Drummers that you youngsters should be studying!

To be fair what you said about Mr. Carlock could easily be said about any of the drummers mentioned in your list (yeah yeah I know I'm gonna catch flack for that, oh my god how dare you say that about Vinnie C. and Steve Gadd). They are all fantastic players at levels most of us won't ever reach, does that mean we as fans of music or musicians ourselves shouldn't follow and learn from them? No, on the contrary, we live in an amazing age were technology has helped obtain access to an incredible wealth of musical knowledge, might as well do the best to be the best version of the player/musician one wants to be. As drummers, the more we expose ourselves to as many styles and ways of playing, the more we can forge our own voice. Personally I couldn't care less who is better, Buddy or Louie or Gene or Ed or Max (just picking some masters within the big band swing, really there's so many amazing players to pick. ) I know in my bones that learning from any of those cats is a win win for me. Music is not sport, let's not put competition as a metric for art.
