    Keith Carlock just absolutely owns - OWNS - doubles. He's uniquely musical while being a technical beast. I love his asymmetric style. And he's a pure conduit for the music, it just flows right through him.

    It’s as if Krantz is keeping time and Carlock is soloing around it. Absolutely different and masterful. Hasn’t he been Steely Dan’s touring drummer for a while? I saw SD in Austin 4-5 years ago and I didn’t know it was Carlock on the drums but I was constantly saying to myself “damn this drummer is too legit!”

    A little K3 moment - 10:46 KC looks at WK, and attempts to cue, 16th fill to final theme - but Wayne is eyes closed, knowing his drummer can still get one more, to "11" as it were - and Carlock delivers 8 more bars higher still (the face 10:58) - awesome

    Carlock has something truly great that I haven't heard in the playing of Weckl, Coliauta, Bruner or any of the other masters. Something real and organic going on here. He has the technique but doesn't make it obvious like the others tend to do. The best player I've heard yet.

He's Bonham and Weckl's love child- living proof that you can possess it all.

    Wayne is so unconventional, -when he plays more inside I think thats when he's at his best..He's naturally so abstract that his style is gonna be outside automatically ! I thought of Jimi Hendrix's "Who Knows" off of the "Band of Gypsys" cd - his use of a ring modulator style device at the end of his solo is the best application the ring mod I've heard to date .

    Oh...I know why...cause I haven't practiced hours and hours every day all my life. Every day. That may not matter because you need a bucket of talent too.But guys at this level have reached a muscular level where not alot of this movement goes through the brain. Its like the feet and the hands are talking directly to each other. He's almost at Buddys level but needs to mix it up a little. keith has amazing left hand. But Buddy could play any thing at prodigy level. I love this guy.

  • @samm1809

    @samm1809

    9 жыл бұрын

    I bet there's things Keith does that Buddy would have to practice to accomplish. He rarely ventured out of a big band environment, so could Buddy Rich play with the sort of light touch and precisely the textures that Keith is using? Would Wayne Krantz be clambering to make a second album with Buddy Rich above all other drummers? I doubt it. Buddy Rich is someone to aspire to, but his way of doing things wasn't the only display of mastery on the drums. Buddy couldn't play like Vinnie Colaiuta, Tony Williams, Elvin Jones and so on, even Keith. Buddy had kung fu level hands, but on a musical level he was like a master chef who cooked only traditional meals, with about 25% butter. The food shakes the ground, but there's other stuff out there too.
