Why KAI SOTTO Isn't In The NBA? Stunted Growth

Спорт

Today’s feature is a once Filipino prodigy trying to become the first Philippine born player to play in the NBA. At 7’2 and just 20 years old, you’d think the potential of that happening has to be high. But for Sotto decisions made along the way, along with factors out of his control, made his short journey feel a lot longer and go a different way than many expected. As the 2022 NBA draft wound down the Washington Wizards with the 54th pick selected the last center of the 58 man draft, and Kai Sotto fans had to feel hopeful but nervous at the same time. Just 4 more picks to go and for sure Sotto would hear his name called right? Especially after being compared to the second overall pick of that draft Chet Holmgren, as a talent slightly below, but with his size and ability to stretch the floor tons of potential. He was the tallest player to commit to the draft that year, auditioning for a league where size is a premium. Would he fit well with the Golden State Warriors who held the next pick? Cavaliers, Trailblazers? Then with the last pick of the draft, the Indiana Pacers select… Hugo Besson from France. One of Kai’s dreams of being the first Filipino born player drafted into the NBA was crushed. But on to plan B, as he can still be the first to play in an NBA game should a team deem he’s ready enough before it’s too late and his name settles as just another failed prospect who couldn’t figure it out. His first step in his newly found figuring it out process was another year with the Adelaide 36ers and the NBL for the 22-23 season. Why KAI SOTTO Isn't In The NBA? Stunted Growth

Stunted growth idea: Mario Hezonja. Guy had all the hype. U16 Euro Champs MVP. U17 WC MVP. League champ in Spain and Greece. 5th overall pick. Out of the league after 5 unimpressive seasons. in a similar mold, Jan Vesely, but not sure he counts for the series since he's been tearing the euroleague up even since leaving NBA :) Anthony Randolph would be fun too. I've been watching him since he's like 13 and believe it or not, he was more od a center , a better defender and not much on offense before he went to US. When started training in GA, his training was more on wing and guard skills. But among the known legit 7footers, in his generation his game is more like the perfect stretch 5 . Bol, Wemby and Chet are more like guards, while Kessler, Edey and even Rioux are more of traditional C. He just need polish his skills.

He's one of the first in this new wave that are going to think the instant dollar is better than development for the long term career. Once the NBA opens the flood gates and you can go straight to the league, you're gonna see a LOT more stunted player. Cuz every kid that thinks they are NBA ready. There are only a couple kids that can actually MAKE that jump. Everyone knows KG, Kobe, Tmac, LeBron and Dwight. But you can name over a dozen players in that era who either didn't get drafted, went in the 2nd round or, actually went in the 1st, but were out the league after their 1st contract. Honestly, I'm cool with it, cuz it strengthens the college game and then weeds out the players who don't wanna go there and we can get them in and out the league as fast as possible. (If they even make it) But you'll see NBA GM's start paying better attention to the HS ranks. Cuz these mock drafts who put a 17 year old in the Top 5 only to see him 2 years later be a 19 year old 1 and Done playing in Turkey is happening more and more. Shit, go look at mocks from back in October. Half the kids in the lottery aren't even projected in the 1st Round. Cuz people gas these kids, they drink their own Kool Aid, but bottom line........ they aren't ready for college, let alone the NBA. They get exposed, as they should, cuz if I'm handing out a guaranteed 2yr $10mil........I need more proof than "you dominated kids half your size and skill who are all majoring in Criminology next year".

They didn't send him to a division 1 college since he would not be starting in an elite division one college, they also pulled him out in Ignite since the team focused on Jalen Green and not him. First- No, he's not "forced", he loves the game, enjoys the game. Second- He's not eligible for US college. There are so many indications that they never intended to go to college: a. When he was 15, a rich businessman in the Philippines announced in a presscon that he's willing to sponsor Kai's training abroad, in any place of his choice, as long as he passed all his grades at school. That summer, he had to tale extra class for something. b. Months later he news broke out that he got offers from top European clubs, so they decided to pursue training in GA first before making a decision. In an interview where the media asked if they prefer US NCAA or Euroclubs, his father said that Kai's game is more similar to Europeans, not US NCAA so they think he'll benefit more in Europe. c. If there's a serious offer, that could be Auburn, because of their connection to Chuck Person. Schools may have been interested but a year later, we found out that he skipped, or at least delayed his education. d. The curriculum is a lot different from schools in the Philippines.

Kai was eligible to go to college and he had offers as stated in the video and other outside articles but he decided to go to the G-League. Curriculum may be different in the States but I am sure the school(s) would help their athletes who are struggling in their schoolwork. The only reason he did not get drafted in the NBA was his decisions. He should have went to college but went to the G-League which is fine. However, he forego the G-League stint to join the Phil which should not have been his priority at that time. He was also given a chance to play for a team in the summer league but he turned it down.

  • @athenstar10

@@ssor2816 First, thank you for reading my comment, too long, I know but necessary. People just assumed he's eligible because of the pictures and videos but I suspect that's not the whole story. Days after footages of him visiting UK appeared online, I happened to tune in to a podcast of a local (GA) AAU media personality( I forgot the name), one of their topics is that visit. At the end of everything about recuitment, his guest said that John Calipari "will never get himself involved with players that have questionable eligibility." After that meeting, no more updates. Same thing happened with other schools, they seem intereated at first but then no updates. Any student can visit their desired campus or be visited by schools representative anytime and that's just step 1 of the process. Remember what I told earlier, someone rich was willing to sponsor his training anywhere in the world and may I add that he already have endorsements back home. Oh, and the moment he signed the deal with Ignite, he showed the construction of "his" Kaiju Academy. What if those were some of things hindering schools? A year later, a top prospect freshmen was not allowed to play for Auburn due to questionable recruitment process the school did to acquire him... I think that involves Kai's shooting coach Chuck Person. So he could've been recruited the same way. Kai was still seen practicing at Auburn before he flies to California to join the Ignite team. Even if he was eligible, the kid (as he was back then) had trouble maintaining his grades in highschool, with his family around him, what more if he went to college and live out of his comfort zone. I think that's one more factor that affected his Ignite stint.

I've followed Kai for a while now,the kid has decent talent and the size & athletic ability to go with it, he's downfall is not having enough dog in him(mental and physical toughness) while being a liability on a pick and roll defense because of his lateral movement, also all of these Filipino vloggers hyping him like he's Jesus of Nazareth doesn't do him any good either..sometimes you'll see him worrying about getting a new tattoo, playing video games or having a vacation with his family instead of griding in the weight room, working on his weakness in terms of his basketball ability, doing drills over and over again,he should invest on hiring a personal trainer for basketball that travels with you to get that extra work in to get better and stronger..it didn't workout in Ignite,it didn't workout in Adelaide, now he's not in good terms w/ the head coach of the national team,in my humble opinion he needs to dominate in Japan in order to get his stocks up again, that way maybe he'll make it into the NBA,I know it's a long shot but I'll support my fellow Filipino to achieve his dream.

If kai sotto was serious about joining nba he should have humility realising he was not good enough so he should work harder. With today's fast paced game, especially in the NBA, that is a major flaw. Then there are also his strength, shooting and other underdeveloped skill that are very evident. He was pumped up and given very high expectations because of his height as a Filipino, which is very unfair for Kai. Expectation vs Reality is one of the biggest factors stuntint his growth.

Its kinda hard to convince nba teams to draft a guy who's past competition where shooting guards and small forwards playing center and pf lol. Filipino's are short even by Asian standard's, im a 6ft Filipino myself and my youth was spent playing center hehe. Thank God he didnt get drafted, he needed to get some more work on actual big dudes. He should have had focused on going to Europe instead of focusing on the Gilas. I swear being a Filipino basketball fan is pure misery, being the silent laughingstock of international basketball and all. Makes the Knicks (yeah they are doing well rn) and Wolves fans look more desirable. Peezones better post this in the interbasket forum.

His management and agent failed him. 1. They've chosen to stay in USA while allowing him to delay his education, when everybody's expected for him to go to Europe, ideally to Real Madrid or Barca. 2. Choosing Ignite over other legit offers like NBL and again Europe. Personally, I think he will not be given the proper development that he needs coz they will just force to hasten his improvement and it's not right. 3. They let him play for the Philippine when boarders were strict and he's in the middle of his Ignite training. That definitely ruined his and his managent's reputationfor sure. 4. Letting him go through draft with not much draft stock. His agent even guarranteed that at least a team will draft him if he stayed on the list, only for everybody, including Kai to realize that would've been a draft and stash kind of deal which his agent didn't want in the first place. 5. Accepting an offer from NBL team promised to help his development but didn't do anything really but get him used to physicality. 6. He was invited to Summer League but his agent publicly said that he won't be joining, without even asking his client. I remember that live online interview. After his agent said that, Kai suddenly got disconnected and never came back. Weeks later, he changed his agent. It's easy to blame his parents but then again, his parents were just as clueless as him coz things were different in the Philippines. Yes, he still there still things he needs to improve on but by the looks of it, everything's looking better now for his dream.
