Why Junk Journals? What’s the purpose? Why make them?

Whenever I talk about junk journals I get this question in the comments: Why Junk Journals? What’s the purpose? Why make them? What do you do with them when you’re done? That's what I'm answering in today's video.
They're called “junk” journals because the idea is that you take things you already have, left overs, scraps, or look to reuse other second hand materials. Give them a second life. You are building a book from scratch, and since you are using recycled things, there is a little more creative freedom in the materials you choose, but also freedom in the assembly. It doesn’t need to look like a traditional book.
Also in this video, I show you how you can use easily accessible materials that you can use to make a simple junk journal right now.

I cannot tell you how many times I gave up on junk journaling because I’m like, “why am I doing this when I don’t even write in them!” This video explains the reasons and I love it! I can truly say it is therapeutic. My home was destroyed in hurricane Laura in 2020 and we had to live in a small trailer for almost two years. This was extremely traumatic. This is when I learned about junk journals. I made one about our hurricane experience (We stayed and were in the house when the tree came through.) Junk journals kept me sane and gave me calm while we were going through all the decision making and rebuilding.

I'm very, very sorry you went through such trauma. You're much stronger than you may realize, being able to find a way to cope in a healthy way. I'm struggling with an avalanche of unpleasant life events over the past 3.5 years. Your comment has helped me decide the prayer journal / junk journal I've been struggling to start is _not_ stupid or useless or a waste of time. It's therapy. God bless you and yours.

Non artists have no understanding of why you waste your time doing anything. They are blind to all types of art, journals included. But these journals are also historical documents and one day may be valued for the snap shot they provide of the era in which you make your journal - so keep going. don't let any one discourage you.

It's difficult to explain to a non-artist why we create stuff. In my case, my mental health tanks if I don't break out the paints every day. Junk journals are a work of art in themselves, and in my opinion the cost of not doing them outweighs the time, effort, and cost associated with creating them. As long as you are not neglecting your loved ones, don't let anyone put down your creative work.

I recently found a pad of aviation paper and put together a junk journal for my granddaughter who is going off to school to become a pilot. She absolutely loved it and I am so pleased! We are putting finishing touches in it together. Her own creativity came out, we copied her college acceptance letter to use in it and some lined paper to log her fly time. I used an old blue book for the right blue color and had an old atlas for maps. Rubber stamps and stencils too. Such fun!

Why make junk journals? Because it’s FUN to see all the beauty you can create with paper! And it’s serendipitous! “Junk” journal is not the best term (must be the alliteration that keeps it around), it has evolved and expanded over time to include many styles, materials and techniques. Anything goes! For me, it’s about being FREE from perfection.

We are all different. I love waching people making junk journals, but it has to be functional for me. I am trying to make one now from a big paper bag and i am collecting the signatures now, but since this is the first time making a journal i find it really difficult. As they have to be functional, it is going to be my personal journal where each signature contains a topic i love, like autumn (photos, pictures from magazines, recipes for food to make in autumn), Christmas (old christmas cards, recipes, traditions, wishlists, photos of our christmas trees through the years, aso), education (copy of diplomas, class photos, friends from school, teachers that inspired me), one signature about my son, and so on. A book about me and my life.

This is a wonderful intro to junk journals! I will refer people who ask to your thorough and informative video. Thank you! I love the process of making a junk journal. Each one has its own personality, and some are just works of art in and of themselves that won’t be “used” in any way. I have purchased a few journals over the years just for their artistic (and tutorial) value! I had planned to include Junk Journal July in my current “memory-keeping journal,” but the thrill of creating a new journal specifically for July has changed my mind 😂. Really loved watching you make the small journal from the watercolor box and it turned out beautifully! Who can resist a good box?? Thank you, again, Margarete, for sharing your time and talent with the rest of us ❤

Margarete, I thoughly enjoyed this video for lots of reasons. In a way it connected to your prompt for July "free". I find playing with journalling in whatever form, has a freedom about it. For my sanity I need to write about stuff, whether about events ( in what is basically my mundane life) or my feelings and moods. For me everything is connected to my faith and to include Gods Word is life giving. I hope anyone new to journaling will give it a go after watching your super video. Thank you. Pauline. Age seventy one and a half. X.

I love recycling things and using them in an unexpected way and I love paper and save and rescue every piece of it, I myself do envelopes with those papers, greeting cards and things like that for creative reasons and I do nature journaling. But I never got the point of making those junk journals and thought there might be some kind of "magic reason" for doing this. I got it now. There is a kind of magic to those people who do them.

Finally....someone has answered my question. My understanding is that a junk journal is a style of journal that has multiple uses (scrapbook, diary, etc.). And the purpose of a junk journal as opposed to other journals, is that one is supposed to enjoy the making process, and make it unique to their liking. Up until now, I thought that a junk journal was just a way to waste one's time and materials in order to create a book that is nothing more than....junk. Thank you for this informative video.

I was hooked. I purchase digitals, I'm not that creative. There are so many people who are creative and sell digitals for a reasonable amount. i have enough to digitals to last me for years. Your video came across my feed and I was so excited! I have been a creative from about 10 years old and I'm mid 70's now. I have seen and done a lot in the art world. I always come back to paper in the end. I love all the pockets, secret enclosures and the absolute creativity and therapy of junk journals but I can't find a use for them at all. Sadly this video did not solve this issue for me. I've made about half a dozen and while I like them they sit on a shelf. I don't journal and don't know anyone that does. I have never scrapbooked and don't know anyone that does so I am left with making things that are of little use. Sad but true. I will stick to watching junk journal ideas and incorporating them into cards that I sell. Darn, I had high hopes. I enjoyed your video and will binge on your past ones. Thanks so much. Jan

Margarete, your videos are so inspiring! I like making ATC size art but, when I make something good enough to trade, I can't bear to part with it! I love the clusters, they are perfect accents to the ATCs. An idea that came to me for the prompt 'free' is to collect brochures and Trader Joe's newsletters if you can figure out the times they are released, I'm still trying to work that out. Thank you for igniting inspiration, now I must look and see if you have a video about clusters!

I had that idea, too. Of looking for “free” advertisements to use in a collage such as a flyer for Trader Joe’s. Next time I’m in I’m going to ask for one! 😉❣️👍🏼

I always say I'm contributing to taking care of the environment by up cycling what would normally be thrown in the trash. 😊
