Julien Nagelsmann is one of the brightest managers on the market at the moment.
The 35-year-old was unceremoniously sacked by Bayern Munich after an inconsistent season, replacing him with Thomas Tuchel to little effect.
But Nagelsmann has been on Real Madrid’s radar for some time, and while Carlo Ancelotti’s contract runs until 2024, his future is uncertain. What would the young German manager add to Los Blancos as head coach? Jon Mackenzie is here to explain.

Nagelsmann's RB Leipzig team were a treat to watch. One thing to add, he would also use players in different roles during different phases of play to consistently adapt to what other teams were doing defensively. Key example, sometimes Konrad Laimer would be a 6, sometimes an 8, other times he'd end up at RB depending on where he was needed to break the press or progress the ball. Halstenberg and Klostermann, same thing. Sometimes they'd line up as FB's, other times they be tucking in narrow as LCB/RCB with Upamecano in the middle. The main caveat of all this is he requires players to be adaptable to this method of thinking, something some Bayern players were reluctant to do (mainly because they'd never done it before). If you give him all that youth at Real, especially with the technique they have, plus veterans who are used to a flexible structure and would probably play better the closer they are together since they aren't the fastest, they'd be a juggernaut.

I'd love to see Nagelsmann at Madrid but the truth is that they're never going to be a system first team like others in Europe, they're always going to be a players first team because of the culture, the last two times they had system managers was Lopetegui and Mourinho who had lots of years between them. Maybe it's been enough time and Madrid are ready to try a system first philosophy again but if they're going to do that then they need to move on the old guard and they're not going to do that this summer. In an ideal world Ancelotti moves on to manage Brasil and Nagelsmann arrives in Madrid but that's just not going to happen right now.

The summer 2024 is internally announced as the summer of change because this will be the end of Modric, Kroos, Benzema and Ancelottis contracts and the “big reset“ would fit perfectly. But this decision could lead to a 2019 type of season where Real felt harmless. However if this is what it takes to get a new style of playing and especially a new style of attacking I would accept it because Real needs some more than “give the ball to Vini“ to compete at the highest level as seen against City imo.

Real Madrid has pretty much've never been about being a Systemic Team. Even when we had José we relied heavily on "parking the bus" so to say but that season we scored 110 goals in league alone. So clearly the counter attacking system heavily relied on Higuain, Benzema & Ronaldo's goal tally with Ozil's killer eyes behind them. As Madridista myself, I'm more than happy to see what Carlo has acheived in last 2 season. We had no tangible enforcement (except Camavinga & Tchouameni) where it's needed the most i.e. Attackers & Fullbacks. If given the proper squad Carlo is a proven winner. I personally feel Tuchel would've been better suit than Nagelsmann tbh. But for the Managerial change that'll happen in 2024 summer at Real Madrid doughout, Xabi Alonso or Arbeloa could be in the leading position along with Zidane ofc.

Julian Nagelsman is philosophy and process manager. Who didnt really get a grip on the bayern munich dressing room. For me makes more sense for someone like Pochettino to take real Madrid job who isnt as tactically as strong as Julian but more a man manger like Carlo. Like a happy middle ground between them. Also good at working with young players and could start the rebuild. Funny enough Julian probably a better fit for Chelsea after Tuchel and some of the new signings like Nkunku.

Yes, he is a good manager, but the reason why he's a good manager is because he's good at understanding how a team should be formed, instead of just buying any player that is in form! He's better than most because he understands the idea of chemistry, not just because of his tactics Because if you were to ask other teams to do the same he does in City they wouldn't be able to do it properly.

Florentino Pérez learned a lot from the first term he served as President. He knows he made a terrible mistake when he fired Del Bosque when he started building his galáctico team. That is why he has implemented a policy that is as certain as death and taxes. There are three big trophies each season: league, cup, champions. If you win at least one of the three, you keep your job; if you don't win at least one, you're fired. He does not look at the board unless he is looking to replace the coach. Call that policy what you will, but it gives managers security in their success. I still think Anccelotti isn't the best tactician (though he has improved since he works with his son), but he is a great talent manager and a good people person. And you what? Sometimes that is more than enough. He has won league, cup, champions, superleague, supercup, and club world cup in two years. I'd say he has earned to continue as Madrid's manager.

Difference is peps style requires unreal technical quality in every position apart from haaland who is the best striker in the world anyway. Ancelotti can create a style to win with a team that’s “flawed” hence winning champions leagues with aged squads or unbalanced squads. Peps style is obviously brilliant but there’s a reason he’s not won a champions league since having the best club side we’ve ever seen.

I think that's why Pep is able to dominate leagues while he struggles in UCL, whereas Ancelotti has actually struggled in the league while relying on individual brilliance of his players and the occasion to win cup competitions. Obviously his luck ran out against Man City, and I actually expect more teams to have a go against Madrid if Ancelotti does not alter his tactics.

I like the idea of going after Nagelsmann, i worry about his much publicised ego however. All the success Real have had jn recent times has come under Don Carlo and Zizou, far more selfless and affable managers; we absolutely don't need another Mourinho-style rebirth cycle, b7lut if he can keep that ego in check Nagelsmann might be a good shout

I think it will be interesting to see nagelsmann in PSG. They have the power(money) to buy player an he could introduce PSG to one new philosophy where PSG old Philosophy is try to be like Madrid where they have many stars player in which is fail. I think PSG would be great for nagelsmann as a young coach to build his own team with his philosophy rather than trying to be on big club where trophy every year is the must. and i think its good to have a more great team in the champions league in the future rather just few great team.

Jon McKenzie is an exceptional tactician, HOWEVER TIFO, particularly JJ Bull, lauded/loved/adored *Graham Potter* and that went well didn't it? There's a TIFO video essentially celebrating his arrival at Chelsea (a video they wish they'd not made). So what could possibly go wrong with Nagelsmann at Real? I would suggest it would be a fast-moving car-crash.

I don't think he'd work at Madrid. In Madrid's case it's a lot about being able to manage the squad, tactics have never been that important, Madrid plays simple, straightforward tactics. I really cannot see Nagelsmann playing his weird tactics like a 3-1-5-1 that turns into a lopsided back 4-4-2 on defense and so on at Real Madrid, I don't see Carvajal as a false wingback or a 3rd centerback, nor Vinicius tracking back to help on defense. Nagelsmann can manage an elite squad, just not Madrid, maybe at a more system-type team.

Madrid don't do systems, they always get the best players or currently the best young players in the world for every position and establish a baseline level of quality with in the squad, no manager can come in and tell the board at Madrid to get rid of one of their best players because they don't fit their system, if a manager says that then Madrid will get rid of him. I think that is the right approach, if you have the best players in almost every position and you can't create a winning team because a certain player doesn't fit your system then you need to go and learn how to manage big players from managers like Ancelotti and Mourinho. Most of these modern managers are no different than football manager video games. And i don't think nagelsmann will ever coach Madrid, if you don't understand the culture at Madrid and if you are an outsider and you think your system is everything and unwilling to adapt, then managers will get eaten alive at Madrid. Lopetegui got a taste of that he wanted to be a system manager and once his system fails he didn't know what else to do and he got fired pretty quickly

  • @daniaaal

    @daniaaal

I agree with you to some extent. The more important quality for a Real Madrid manager would be to manage egos of big-name players and allow their individuality to shine on the pitch. It's important for the manager to gain the players' trusts more than any tactical or systemic changes to the way the team plays. Which is why, more often than not, although Madrid are capable of creating chances when they control games, they generally thrive more on counter attacking or transitional football, because in those scenarios, the forwards are afforded more space and independence to problem-solve.

Madrid requires managers like Carlo, José and Zidane who are balanced and grant their attackers freedom. Coaches who push systems like Pep, Nagelsmann and Conte don’t suit Madrid. Watch the way Madrid attack in comparison to City/Arsenal (JDP teams) - Carlo’s style of combinations will suit the Brazilian NT very well.

I wouldn't categorise Mourinho as balanced. He had a very rigid structure to the team, especially in terms of defending, and often made less-pleasant-on-the-eyes teams, but he did allow counter-attacking football to occur. He's very much result oriented more than anything else, so in a way he's always coming up with tactics to counter the opposing team's tactics. Which is why he often loses the dressing room over time, because most players eventually get frustrated with him and how their team plays.
